Are Vampires Really Evil?
One of the most well-known things about vampires is the belief that they are evil creatures. Well, they appear evil enough, don’t they? With those menacing fangs that you know are just longing to suck on your neck, and the fact that they can totally outrun you and beat you at any game that requires any kind of strength, yes, vampires are certainly intimidating. But, evil?
Evil has never actually been a word that I’ve immediately associated with vampires. And I don’t really understand why other people think they’re evil. Sure, they’re killers. But they only really kill because they need to, right? I mean, vampires have to eat just like you and me so why are we holding it against them to the point where we actually call them ‘evil’ because of it? And really, vampires killing humans is no different than humans killing meat to eat. So as far as I see it, vegetarians and vegans may be the only humans that have any right to call vampires evil. The only difference I really see is that most of us don’t actually kill the cow before sitting down to eat it. But still, the principle is the same I think.
Now undoubtedly, there are some evil vampires. Damon from the Vampire Diaries certainly has his evil tendencies, and both Victoria and James, as well as the Volturi in the Twilight Saga are all also very evil vampires. These vampires are different from others because they simply want to inflict pain and torture on innocent people, only to get what they want. But I don’t think it’s fair to lump all vampires in with these types of vampires. And just like there are good and evil humans, vampires can also be either good or evil.
So let’s not call them all evil. I mean, vampires may not have beating hearts, but their feelings get hurt too.

I totally agree! My friend use to love Twilight’s vampires and now she likes the werewolves because she thinks that vampires are evil. She doesn’t even give a reason! Thank you so much for this post so I can give evidence as to why vampires aren’t evil!
Hey, I have sometimes read about vampires who are not intelligent enough to be evil – they are more like predators. And in Van Helsing there was amusing scene where Dracula points out that vampires only kill for food, can humans say the same! D

Sort of, but it depends, they have their own choice, to be evil”hardly evil” or slight :)) i don’t know exactly!they look like normal human, they can survive by eating human foods, hmm, they said there is a community in new Orleans and in Romania that full of vampires, in romania even werewolves exist!they said vampire use or perform black magic.
Im vegetarian and i think that vampires are not evil at all..i mean they kill humans..the worst creature that exists in the world…sooo.. =)

Oh no. We’re still friends. Don’t feel guilty about it, I just found her reason to be really weird. Oh, and I really loved this post! By the way, this is kinda random but it just came to my mind cause I know my friend likes Werewolves. Are there any flaws on Werewolves that people might think evil but not necessarily evil? Like the ones in Twilight?
Hmm…I’m thinking of when Jacob in on the beach with Bella talking about who he really is. And when she becomes horrified, he calls her a hypocrite and says, “I guess I’m just not the right kind of monster for you.” So I think it’s sort of the same thing. Jacob could go around tearing up whoever he pleased, but he doesn’t. They all use their powers for good *sigh* If only one of them would turn evil, it’d be so much easier to decide between Team Edward and Team Jacob!
Yeah, that would make it easier. But don’t you think there could be other reasons why people might think Vampires are evil? Maybe it’s there whole “Darkness” image?
Oh, I think there’s lots of reasons why people might think vampires are evil. And their Darkness image is definitely one of those. Like many of our vampire folklore say on this site, many people used to think that vampires were part of the occult. Very dark. Lots of reasons, for sure. I just don’t think that all vampires are evil. :)

I think one evil Vampire myth that I thought was a little was the True Rhode Vampire story. I mean, a girl who comes back from the dead to inflict death on her family members. Kinda evil if you ask me.(Just a tint)

tho i fink you got it wrong about damon. Hes not reali evil alot of bad things have happend him and dey messed him up. if you watch the vampire diaries series its clear why he does thosse fings and why he only finks of himself. Even the books show the lighter side of damon
This isn’t from /my/ POV, but:
- They are night creatures. The night is something mysterious. And when people don’t know about something, they fear it. This fear can become hatred.
- They kill humans. It’s inhumane to kill humans.
- “Blood, blood, gallons of the stuff; Give them all that they can drink and it will never be enough!”
- There are more ‘bad’ vamps throughout history/legend than good ones.
Just some reasons people have given me for thinking vamps are evil.
Personally, I don’t care. Just like humans, there are all different types of vamp.
vampires are not evil at all like it said they have to eat to.
I belive vampires are not evil because they are real to my to be good even the have to drink blood to stay alive

vampires are, in my opinion, even better then humans. if you think about everything humans do to this planet like; pollution, over hunting, destorying habitat ect. . . then you look at vampires; they kill only when they need to and thats only for survival(and maybe the odd vandetta), they run fast so they dont really need to use cars, and they can live anywhere so they dont impact the habitats of animals too badly. so i would say vampires are good and humans are the evil ones. humans are cruel by nature and vampires are not, for them its a choice.
