Boycott the Creeper?
Victor Salva is a pedophile. There. We’ve stated that right out the gate. He was convicted in a court of law. He has admitted to the crime. And any psychologist or psychiatrist can tell you that a pedophile cannot be “cured.” They can only be, it is hoped, conditioned not to reoffend, but the urges that led them to commit a criminal act, if they have in fact acted upon those urges, will never disappear. Thus we do not say Salva WAS a pedophile; rather he IS a pedophile. He has not, so far as is known, reoffended. He served his time. Many, however, feel the punishment he received was too lenient by far. I won’t argue that point, but the fact is, he did his time and was released. He “paid his debt to society.”
I can’t tell the folks who are calling for a boycott of the forthcoming JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 that they are wrong. I find the desire to deep six the film troubling, though. It would, if successful, set a dangerous precedent. When a convict is released from incarceration, he is required to seek gainful employment. By the logic, taken to its logical extreme, of those who want to ban JEEPERS CREEPERS 3, no one, no place of business, no industry should ever employ a convicted pedophile. Yet convicted pedophiles, like all convicts, must earn a living. See the conundrum here? And should it matter HOW the convict in question earns his living? And who would get to decide that? Disturbing questions. Another such question is, what about the hundreds of other people who are working on the film? Should they be denied the right to earn a living because the writer/director of the film is a pervert? Even if Salva stepped down as director and they brought in somebody new, the work is still his intellectual property. He will still, by law, make money off it. Can we legally stop a man from earning a living? Even if in the past he did something horrendous?
