Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Big news for vampire loving gamers! We’re getting another Castlevania game, and this time it’s 3D! Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is the latest in the kick ass Castlevania series. The game, said to come out some time in 2010, is being developed by MercurySteam and Kojima Productions and will be playable on the PS3 and the X-Box 360.

Let’s take a look at the game play - According to an interview with IGN it’s said to be a third person action adventure title with combat, platforming and puzzle elements. Like in the old games you still have the whip to do combat with - the pyrokinetic whip is called “The Combat Cross,” and once again, like old games the whip isn’t just used for combat, but also for scaling walls and swinging over gaps. The commands consist of short range and long range attacks, and interactions with other items in the player's inventory such as stakes, knives, holy water and other environmental weapons.

It’s said that the developers are trying to reach out to new audiences by distancing this game from previous Castlevania games, but they have kept some elements intact so that they don’t alienate current fans. We still get to kick vampire and werewolf ass, but a lot of new beasties have been added to the mix.

As for the plot of this new game - The game follows Gabriel Belmont who is a member of an elite group known as the “Brotherhood of Light,” which are a troop of holy knights that protect people from supernatural beasts. Gabriel’s wife ends up getting murdered by one of these monsters and her soul is then trapped for eternity. Because she is now neither alive nor dead, she realizes what is at stake and guides Gabriel to his fate to save the world. Gabriel travels the destroyed land, meeting other characters, while searching for the three factions of the Lords of Shadow so that he can destroy them. The plot centers on the mysterious masks.

When asked about these masks, Lords of Shadow’s producer David Cox replied:

“The mask – God Mask is the main sort of story element of the game. The three pieces of the God Mask are held by the three Lords of Shadow. Gabriel is looking to recover those to save the world because, basically, the dead can’t find rest without it in one piece. But, also, he finds out early on the game that it has the power to bring back the dead and he wants to resurrect his dead wife who’s murdered. That’s his main motivation in the game. This other mask, we just recently revealed in the new extended trailer. This is a different mask and it’s called the Devil Mask. You’re welcome to hold that.”
