The Vampire Diaries Season 1, Episode 10

Despite the last episode tying pretty much everything up, and introducing a couple new characters, this episode was pretty action packed. Logan is turned down an invitation, –thank god, since Logan is dead. He grabs a jogger for a snack, and heads out for the night. Jeremy Gilbert is reading and learning more about the Gilbert family, and his ancestor’s vampire fascination, and begins drawing again, –drawing vampires. Stefan and Elena are still on the outs, because Stefan still wants to move, until the Salvatore brothers find out another vampire is up and running around again. Before the big discovery, Stefan and Damon were making plans to leave, –and separately, though Damon is reluctant.

The sheriff is enlisting Damon’s help, while her daughter Caroline is still nursing a blossoming friendship with Matt Donovan. Seems like everyone is in a state or limbo until Logan is discovered as the new vampire. Damon and Stefan now have to stay in town to eradicate the rabid vampire problem; this means more Stefan and Elena time. Damon uses Caroline and the compass to track Logan down, and ends up shot full of wooden bullets, and completely blank as to who turned Logan into a vampire, –because it wasn’t him, Stefan, Vickie, or Lexi. We-eird. So was it the new guy, Alaric? Either way, Logan is very cranky and very curious about the Salvatore’s day-walking abilities.

The shit hits the fan at Career Day: Matt gets all soulful and talkative with Elena, and Caroline sees, –maybe not the best move, buddy. Jeremy starts trying to make up with Tyler Lockwood who isn’t at all interested. After a brief scuffle, Mayor Lockwood takes the boys outside and tries to force them to fight it out. Tyler and Jeremy are rescued by Alaric, –the new history teacher. Inside the school, Logan shows up to stir some shit up, alerting Stefan, who calls Damon, –Damon is severely pissed after being shot. Everyone who knows about Logan’s death, the sheriff and the “Council”, Stefan, Damon, are all in hot pursuit. Elena connects the dots when she hears about Logan trying to insist on an invitation from Aunt Jenna the night before.

Logan takes off after he unsuccessfully tries to threaten Stefan for the secret of walking in daylight, and Elena gets the explanation from Stefan. Logan snatches Caroline, and drives off with her unconscious in the car, but it isn’t long before he’s intercepted by Damon and Stefan. Stefan takes Caroline home and leaves Damon to kill Logan, –the sheriff is on her way after Damon radios her from the CB in Logan’s SUV. Damon lets Logan go however, when he tells the crow-bar wielding vampire that there’s another way to break the spell on the tomb under the old church.

While Tyler punches Jeremy for trying to reconcile with him, and the new guy Alaric somehow manages to kill Logan in the parking lot of the building where he’s been stashing his victims, –Elena is driving Stefan home. And they get biz-zay! Yup, looks like Stefan and Elena are back on track. But not for long. While Stefan is fetching Elena an after-sex glass of water, Elena wanders around Stefan’s room and sees the photo of Katherine. Uh-oh. Elena takes off, leaving the vervain necklace behind, and drives like a lunatic down the road away from Stefan’s home. She slams into some psycho, standing in the middle of the road, and her car flips, –the figure on the road stands and approaches her. Then they leave us hanging!

That bites; aren’t we all dedicated enough? They could have told us what happened! We would have tuned in next week if they had told us! Damn it! All right, rant over. I don’t know about you guys, but I was really worried about Damon there, –and what’s the deal with the whole other way to break the spell on the tomb? And the other vampires who want to open it? Why? Maybe Katherine was important to more vampires than just Stefan and Damon. I suspect Alaric, –what the hell was with him killing Logan? Seems like a pretty bold move, and besides, it didn’t look like he was using any real vampire powers to kill Logan. Though he must have known what Logan was when he killed him.

Maybe Alaric isn’t a vampire, just a weird vampire hunter type. He might look all sweet and innocent, the rugged puppy-dog face, etc., but I dunno. I think the whole good guy routine is laid on a little too thick to mean anything except raging undercover psycho. On the other hand, maybe it was Alaric that Elena smashed with her car, or a totally new different vampire! God, I can’t wait for the next episode. I’m practically salivating. Plus, I wonder what the hell Elena is going to say to Stefan if she survives her little rendezvous with the crazy vampire she hit with her car. I almost forgot that Elena had no clue that she and Katherine were practically identical. Don’t worry, we’ll be the first to let you know what happens next week!

A Vampire Legend from Hungary

There are many vampire animals that we know of, bats and fish being the most common. But, a chicken? Yep, this vampire legend comes from Hungary and it entails a hen, or rather the egg of a hen, that has vampire tendencies and eventually will leave their owner sick and weak after drinking their blood. The upside? They also tend to make their owners very rich.

These chicken vampires are known as Lidercs, and it’s from this term that the word “lidercnyomas” comes from, which is still used in Hungary today and means “nightmare.” The Liderc is thought to be the first egg given by a black hen although just like all legends, this one also has many versions with some saying that any egg from a hen can be a Liderc, or any egg at all that is particularly small in size. The original form of this legend seems to state that the egg must be placed in manure in order to hatch while others state that the egg must be placed under a human’s arm.

Should the owner of the Liderc be a woman, the hatched egg will turn itself into a man to seduce her. However, instead of actually acting as their lover, they will instead sit on them and drink the woman’s blood. It’s true that the Liderc will collect gold of many forms for its owner, making them rich but gold doesn’t do you much good if you’re too weak to get out of bed, does it? For this reason, those who are suffering from the Liderc that they own often want to get rid of it. And luckily, there are a few ways to do this.

Assigning the Liderc to an impossible task such as collecting water in a sieve or pulling sand by a rope is one way to get rid of a Liderc. And if you’re lucky enough to happen across a hollow tree, locking the Liderc into the tree is another way to get rid of the annoying creature.

Other Hungarian legends state that Lidercs are actually tiny little devils and that while they may also come from hen’s eggs, they are usually found in rags, old clothes, boxes, or glass bottles. These Lidercs also make their owners very rich but these owners also have superhuman strength. This is thought to be because once a Liderc appears, the owner’s soul is given to the Liderc, or to the Devil.

A third take on this legend also comes from Hungary and while there’s no mention of them drinking blood, they most likely do and also have other qualities that scream, “Vampire!” These traits are such things as haunting cemeteries and not being able to come out during the daytime. These Lidercs are also thought to be able to fly at night while they are in their animal form, and while in flight, they sprinkle flames around the Earth. These Lidercs do not always assume an animal shape and can change into human form. While in human form, they can sneak down chimneys or through keyholes to strike doom on its victims. When it leaves, it will shoot flames and dirty the walls. The entering of this form of Liderc can be stopped by burning incense and birch branches.

Stephenie Meyer is Interviewed on Oprah

The interview is Stephenie Meyer’s only appearance and discussion over the new film New Moon, –so the Twilight lovers and Meyer fans will just have to wait for the next movie to hear from Stephenie, I guess. Oprah starts by introducing the non-believers to the books, and the films so far. Then, of course! a trailer for the new film, outlining Edward leaving Bella, Jacob moving in as maybe something more than a friend, and Bella following Edward to Europe. Afterwards, we get a more personal look at Stephenie Meyer, and her day-to-day life before she decided to pursue a writing career.

According to Meyer, she got the idea for the novels from a completely spontaneous dream; she dreamed of two people talking in a forest, one of them a “sparkly”, gorgeous boy, the other a girl, totally normal in every way, and the discussion between the new lovers. In her own words, she had just been going through the motions of being a stay-at-home-mom, with no real interest in writing a book, or even in vampires. Then she has this dream, and suddenly wanted to know more about the characters in her dream, so she just began writing more about the characters, filling in their story from Chapter 13 of Twilight, to the end of the book, then going back to the beginning and writing the rest.

It took her over three years to finish the novel, with no prior experience in writing, not even so much as a short story. Stephenie Meyer arrives on stage, accompanied by a roaring crowd, –looking fabulous. Meyer says the dream was a “one of a kind thing” and she never imagined the story would become a series of books, she just didn’t want to forget the story itself. Stephenie had three tiny kids, and worked continuously on notes, and journal entries, organizing everything, and when it was finished, decided to publish it, never imagining the story would have the fame and media attention it does today. It was rejected nine times, and ignored several more, before someone finally answered positively. Well, thank god it didn’t end up on a shelf in her closet! I wonder how many other people have these fabulous stories, floating around their closets and attics, or waiting to come out of their dreams.

10 Reasons It Sucks Having A Vampire Boyfriend

Having your very own dark and sexy vampire boyfriend would of course totally rock all sorts of awesome. But like most good things there are a few downsides to it as well. Why would it suck having a vampire as a boyfriend? Read on…

1. Vampire bite marks on your neck are way harder to cover up than a hickey some mortal boy may give you. It’ll take a bit more than concealer to cover that baby up; I suggest investing in a lot of scarves.

2. You know how parents always want to have a nice family dinner with your new boy to get to know him better? Well, that’s a little hard for someone that only drinks blood. “Uhh… I’ll just have a steak… super rare.” I’m sure he’ll raise a few eyebrows during dinner.

3. No fun in the sun for you guys. Say goodbye to warm and sunny trips to the beach.

4. He uses speech from hundreds of years ago, which makes you scratch your head trying to figure out what the hell he is saying. “What hath thee wrought?” Say what?

5. Sleeping all day so that you can hang out with him at night is totally killing your tan.

6. He is soooo much older and wiser than you. Meaning, you can’t win any arguments. He’ll be pulling out the immortality card whenever he can. “When you’re 500 years you’ll understand!” Lame.

7. Angst, lots of angst. Yes, he may have you in his life, someone to love and warm his cold blooded heart, but he’ll still have his emo days. Expect him to go into dark brooding mode a lot, going on and on about all the horrible things he did in his “early years.”

8. He is easily overwhelmed by our modern technology. Ever try explaining to a grandparent how to use a computer? Frustrating right? Imagine having to explain it to a centuries old vampire. “Back in my day we had carrier pigeons, none of this e-mail or texting nonsense!”

9. You keep cutting your tongue on his sharp fangs. Sure, after a while you learn the art of kissing a vampire, but for a while there every kiss results in you nicking your tongue on those fangs. Then your tongue bleeds which triggers that blood lust of his, which is a whole other issue there. Some days you just aren’t in the mood for a good ol’ blood draining.

10. No warm cuddles. Being undead and all means he’s a bit on the chilly side, so you’re stuck cuddling a chunk of ice.

Vampire Bites – Don’t Let Them Get Infected!

The Blood that Bonds – Christopher Buecheler wrote The Blood that Bonds for everybody who loves a good vampire story, –free! The novel is professionally written and edited, –it’s not just some random illiterate fan-fiction, but a delicious novel covering all kinds of sexy vampire fun. Chris has this to say about the book:

“I’m constantly working on new ways of getting the word out to people about it. I’m hoping in the next few weeks to begin posting podcasts in which I read the book (when the series of podcasts is complete I’ll basically have a full, finished audio book). I’m also working on the second draft of the sequel to The Blood That Bonds, currently titled Blood Hunt, which chronicles the further adventures of several TBTB characters as well as a whole new cast. I’m also thinking of contests I might be able to run that would catch people’s attention.”

Horrorfest 4 – That’s right, it’s that time of year again, –or well, it will be soon. We’re all getting pumped about the latest collection from After Dark Films of 8 Films to Die For. So far in the collection is Dread (from Clive Barker), Hidden (labeled psychological suspense), Lake Mungo (teen leads a deadly double life before drowning), The Final (what could possibly be more frightening to a college student than a term paper?), The Graves (so far, description seems a bit ambiguous), and ZMD; Zombies of Mass Destruction, –I doubt the last one needs much description. So far, no vampires or werewolves yet, but don’t give up hope! There are still two films yet to be added. The Underground Horror Movie Network – Rebuilding and renewing their site, so that indie and camp horror film-makers can finally get the break they deserve. Hard work in the horror industry has no replacement! The Staff of UHMN have this to say about their remodeled site:

Obsessed With Vampire Sex (you know you are)

Fox News recently had their sex expert blog about why we seem to love the idea of vampire sex so much. She took a look into the attraction and came up with these reasons behind our leechy lust: they’re hot, they’re kinky, they’re into S&M, they scare us, they tease us, they do the walk of shame for us, they make us beg and, they never die. She made excellent points, but I think she missed a few. Let me break it all down for you…

They’re hot
Damn near every book, movie and show portrays vampires as super sexy undead creatures. I mean, who would turn an ugly person into a vampire, that would just be mean. So chances are your seductive vampire will be a sexy one.

They’re kinky
Have you ever seen a really dirty vampire sex scene in a movie? It’s full of frenzy, crazy lust and lots of biting. It’s not your simple boring missionary position, it full out wild sex.

They’re into S&M
Of course there would be a but of pain mixed in with your pleasure. Picture a hot vamp roughly pinning you down and biting you as he continues to have is naughty way with you. Fun right? Yea it is.

They scare us
Having a powerful and scary being take control is a thrill for humans. We like a bit of fear mixed in, it makes it all so much more exciting and exhilarating for us. Look at all the trill seekers out there, people that skydive, race cars and such, it’s scary and it’s a hell of a rush.

They tease us
As the blogger said, it’s all about the initial seductive. The passion that sets your imagination on fire, causing all sorts of curious and lust-filled thoughts. It’s like foreplay for the mind.

They do the walk of shame
Since they have to be gone before the sun rises you don’t have to worry about that awkward moment the next morning.

They make us beg
They take total control and go for all of our sensitive spots. Kissing and biting lightly on your neck will make anyone go wild and willing to beg for more.

They never die
They’re mysterious and incredible supernatural creatures. They’re so much more than a simple man. Never dying puts them a step above and makes them superior in so many ways.

And that concludes the list the blogger made. Some things I would add in are…

They’re skilled
They are centuries old and you better believe they have mastered their sex skills throughout the years. Sex with a vampire wouldn’t be like with a mortal man. There was be any clumsiness or failed techniques; with an experienced vamp it will be perfect, he’ll know every sweet spot to hit and every way to make you scream.

They’re romantic
Over the years they have practiced the art of romance. They know the methods to use to make you swoon and make your heart skip a few beats.

Vampires: Girls vs. Boys

What most of the unofficial Feminists Against Vampire Romance Novels organization, –bent on the mass destruction of a fictional theme, –seems to miss in the world of vampires right now, is that normally, chicks are over-represented in vampire literature and cinema. How many badass vampire guys can you think of? Blade, Dracula, Kurt Barlow, Count Orlock, etc., etc., –but lately, doesn’t it seem like we’ve had our share of vampire chicks? Let’s see, who was the most badass, top vampire in From Dusk Till Dawn? That sexy she-bitch with the snake, Santanico Pandemonium, played by Salma Hayek. How about Queen of the Damned? Bloodrayne? Underworld? –all of them? In what world is it that vampires are suddenly the embodiment of all things sexist?

One of the first vampire novels the world ever saw, coming even before Bram Stoker’s Dracula, was Carmilla, by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. What was it about? Those of you currently Google’ing are automatically disqualified. The novel was about a female vampire preying on, –not a man, –but a woman. Now the truly dedicated feminist will search her inner database of man hate to come up with a reason as to why this novel was anti-female, but let’s just roll with this theme we’re building here. Why is it that men seem to make such crappy vampires? Whose love destroyed Dracula? Why, it was Mina, –and she was a vampire at the time. I won’t even go into the whole Akasha thing in Queen of the Damned, because we’re past that.

The point is, independent women in vampire novels are not a scarcity; the literary strong female vampire archetype is older than the literary strong male vampire archetype by twenty-five years. It’s actually rare to see a popular vampire role filled by a male, because Hollywood loves to cash in on the snotty vampire bitch trend: hot female vampire warriors are gold. At the end of the Twilight saga, Bella ends up being one of the most gifted vampires in their clan for her amazing presence of mind. How can that leave a bitter taste in the mouth of popular feminism? Vampire and horror cinema in general have moved with the times, not against them. Women as vampires have become a stronger force than men as vampires, both literally and metaphorically.

Kristen Stewart Says “F**K Off!”

The Twilight super star Kristen Stewart has been getting a lot of love and even more hell from Twilight fans and from magazines. The poor girl just doesn’t get a break from the press, the fangirls and boys and the paparazzi. Sure the woman has fame, financial stability, loving fans and family but at the same time she has no alone time, little freedom and everything in her life is made public.

In an interview from a while back she said that all the attention and fame as made her a bit of a recluse. “I don’t leave my hotel room – literally, I don’t,” she said. “I don’t talk to anybody about my personal life … it’s really important to own what you want to own and keep it to yourself … It depends what mood I’m in. Some nights, I think, “You know what? I don’t care. I’m just going to do what I want to do.” Then the next day I think, “Ugh. Now everyone thinks I’m going out to get the attention.” But it’s like, no, I actually, for a second, thought that maybe I could be like a normal person.”

You gotta feel for the girl, I mean, can you imagine how shitty that would be? To add to it she still has everyone and their mother hounding her on her supposed love affair with Robert Pattinson aka vampire Edward Cullen. In a recent interview about her life and about her romance with Pattinson she joked, “I probably would’ve answered it if people hadn’t made such a big deal about it … I know that people are really funny about ‘Well, you chose to be an actor, why don’t you just f-ing give your whole life away?! Can I have your firstborn child?’”

“I’m just trying to keep something,” she said. “If people started asking me if I was dating Taylor, I’d be like ‘F- off!’ I would answer the exact same way.”

After that interview the silly Robert Pattinson looked at Taylor Lautner and said, “Me too.” Haha.

Unfortunately for her she won’t be living a normal life any time soon, especially with New Moon coming out November 20, 2009.

Watch Out for Pumpkins and Melons

One of the most frightening things about vampires is that they can pretty much go anywhere and do anything, including those awesome superhuman feats. But would vampires instill such fear if they were inanimate objects? Well, yes and no. According to a legend that stemmed from the Balkans, there’s a whole other kind of vampire that we should be on the lookout for. And they might be found right in your produce aisle at the grocery store. Or – gasp! – waiting for you on your front doorstep, especially around the time of Halloween.

These vampires are vampiric pumpkins and watermelons, although the legend is based on the belief that any fruit left outside the night of a full moon will become a vampire. Legend has it that any fruit that’s left outside for more than ten days, or that is left outside after Christmas, will start to roll around on the ground growling and being a general nuisance to the humans around it. But this doesn’t come without warning. It’s also said that it’s possible to identify a fruit that’s about to become a vampire because drops of blood will start to appear on its skin.

However, these fruit vampires don’t seem to have the ability to grow teeth and bite humans, much less drain them of their blood. So, if you’re walking out next Halloween, or happen to see a watermelon rind sticking out of your neighbor’s trash, the chances are that you probably don’t need to worry. After all, they are just pumpkins and watermelons. If they really start to irritate you, the chances are good that you can probably just smash them with your foot. But still, I’ll be sure to throw out my pumpkins next Halloween straight away. And while I’m at, I may leave out the teeth-carving on my next jack-o-lantern. We don’t want to be taking chances, now do we?

10 Deliciously Evil Vampire Villains

Today’s post is filled with all kinds of bloodthirsty, cruel and evil vampire villains from books, films and television. Enjoy my sweets…

1. Akasha
The vampire queen from The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. What makes this vamp villainess? The fact that when she awoke not only did she destroy most of the vampires in the world but had also planned to destroy 90% of the world’s men, keeping only a small number of men for breeding.

“We shall live even in this state of living death, we shall love, we shall feel, we shall defy all who would judge and destroy us.”

2. Damon Salvatore
The vampire hottie from the books and CW show The Vampire Diaries. If you have watched the show you know that Damon is packed full of evil and makes Stefan’s life pure hell. It appears that no one but Elena is safe around him for he just can’t seem to stop brutally torturing and killing people.

Damon: “What’s so special about this Bella girl? Edward’s so whipped!”
Caroline: “You’ve gotta read the first book first. It won’t make sense if you don’t.”
Damon: “I miss Anne Rice. She was so on it.”

3. David
David aka Kiefer Sutherland from the movie The Lost Boys. He was the frightening leader of the gang of vampires, causing all sorts of mischief and mayhem, giving Michael and the Frog brothers a tough ride.

“Maggots, Michael. You’re eating maggots. How do they taste?”

4. Dracula
Do I even need to give this legendary vampire an introduction? Big bad Dracula caused all sorts of chaos and pain in Bram Stoker’s novel. Killing off an entire ship’s crew, toying with Lucy and putting Mina under his wicked spell – this guy was one evil badass.

“It is the eve of St. George’s Day. Do you not know that tonight, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway?”

5. Drusilla
The totally insane, yet hilarious psychic vampire from the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Dru was one of my faves on the show, sure she was evil and killed mercilessly but she was highly entertaining while doing so.

Dru: “I’m naming all the stars.”
Spike: “You can’t see the stars, love. That’s the ceiling. Also, it’s day.”
Dru: “I can see them. But I’ve named them all the same thing, and there’s terrible confusion…”

6. James
The major antagonist in Stephanie Meyer’s famed novel, Twilight. This cruel vampire was an excellent tracker and enjoyed hunting humans down for nothing more than sport. He lures Bella away from safety in attempt to kill her.

“It was all for him, of course. You’re simply a human, who unfortunately was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and indisputably running with the wrong crowd, I might add.”

7. Lucien Lacroix
This evil vampire comes from the show Forever Knight. Lucien, once a Roman general, is the cruel, yet practical vampire that sired Nick and therefore wont leave Nick alone, which causes all kinds of problems.

“Les mortels meurent. Qu’importe la façon?”
["Mortals die. Does it really matter how or when?"]

8. Sidorio
This malevolent vampire is from the Vampirates series by Justin Somper. This vamp has an insatiable appetite for blood and feeds whenever and on whoever he chooses.

“We’re not civilized. We’re vampires…”

9. Jan Valek
The master vampire from John Carpenter’s Vampires. Valek is the big bad vampire in this film, killing off the slayers and causing all sorts of hell throughout the whole movie.

“For 600 years I have fed on your kind at will.“

10. Viktor
The first believed good guy gone bad from the hit movie Underworld. Victor destroyed countless lives, subjected the lycans to slavery and lied to Selene her whole life – he’s one bad bad vampire.

“Your incompetence is becoming most… taxing.”
