As if I needed another reason to go to Florida. Beyond the beaches and weather, which becomes more and more attractive to me as the winter months stretch interminably on, there’s a Transylvanian restaurant in the town of Hollywood! I’ve never had Transylvanian food. I’ve had German, which is delicious, and there’s probably some overlapping with Hungarian and Romanian culinary fare, just as the cultures tend to overlap in that part of the world. But to dine in a restaurant that specializes in Romanian dishes, a restaurant that takes its very name from the territory of “the Land Beyond the Forests,” an establishment with a brief biography of Dracula included on its website—this alone would be worth driving down for.
Of course I really have no idea what constitutes authentic Transylvanian food. Shall we peruse the menu to see? Hmm. Romanian beer. Check. Honeycomb tripe soup. Why not? Tochitura pork? It’s supposed to be a traditional dish, so that’s good enough for me. Mititei. Sarmale. Hungarian beef goulash. My mouth is watering. But where are the choice meats impaled on skewers? The Dracula shish kebobs? The blood puddings? I’ma email ‘em and tell ‘em to have those on the menu by the time I get there!
