Major ‘Vampire Diaries’ Character Getting Prequel Book!

Most fans know that The Vampire Diaries show is actually based on a series of books by L. J. Smith. The books (like the show) follow Elena Gilbert, a high school girl torn between two vampire brothers. The book series was originally a trilogy published in 1991, but pressure from readers led Smith to write a fourth volume, The Dark Reunion, which was released the next year. After taking a long writing break, L. J. Smith announced in 1998 a new spin-off trilogy entitled The Vampire Diaries: The Return, continuing the series with Damon as the main protagonist. But the series still isn’t finished! A prequel is on the way, telling the story of a major character - Stefan.

HarperCollins Children’s Books and Alloy Entertainment have announced that they will be releasing Stefan’s Diaries #1: Origins, the first in a trilogy of novels that will shed light on Stefan and Damon’s long, troubled history, including the Civil War-era romance that turned them against each other.

But here’s the bad news - it doesn’t appear that L. J. Smith will be writing this new trilogy. Yea, the new Vampire Diaries books won’t even be written by the original author. It looks like this is strictly a prequel based off of the show. So fans of the show will love these books, but those that followed the books may not. If you have read the books then you know that the show is NOTHING like them, the show is its own separate thing, which means that this new trilogy probably will be too. Lame.

The first entry of Stefan’s Diaries is scheduled to hit bookstores sometime in November.

What do you guys think of the prequel? Are you excited for some new books? Or are you a fan of the original books and are just pissed that these new one’s aren’t written by the real author?
