PENNY DREADFUL’S Dracula: Worth the Wait

It took them three seasons to get around to having Dracula debut on PENNY DREADFUL, but it was worth it. How many of you, like me, had your jaws drop when the charismatic but benign Dr. Alexander Sweet was revealed to really be Dracula? I knew Drac was supposed to finally arrive this season, and avoiding spoilers was difficult and required some effort on my part, but I’m glad I managed it. That moment of surprise during episode two was most enjoyable. Did any of you figure it out beforehand? Looking back at Sweet’s speech during the season premiere, I felt like I SHOULD have figured it out. It’s so obvious in hindsight. Even the characters name, Sweet. It’s like, well, duh! Of COURSE he’s Dracula!

I’m digging the alternate origin they’re using for the series, too, wherein Dracula is the brother of Lucifer, a fallen angel condemned not to hell like his brother but to walk the earth eternally, feeding on human blood. I’ll be curious to see if they manage to work in the real-life history of the historical Vlad Dracula, or even more of the fictitious pedigree Bram Stoker provided for his vampire “Count.” And I’m glad to say I approve of the casting for the role. Christian Camargo has the makings of an excellent Dracula. He has a touch of the Christopher Lee about him. (Still not sure how I feel about his pompadour, though.)

  1. The episode with the Creature and Miss Ives has been my favorite so far, but I can’t wait until she recognizes Dracula for who he is and lets him have it with both barrels.
