Strong Black Women on ‘The Vampire Diaries’

“Maria Howell as Ayana on The Vampire Diaries”

I keep an eye on Graveyard Shift Sisters, because their blog and various sites are very near and dear to my heart; I am a white woman, who was placed into the system when I was young, and if it wasn’t for the influence of the four strong black women who ran the group home I lived in, I really don’t know what would have happened to me. I had four, beautiful mothers who I felt loved me, and protected me from people in my life who wanted to harm me.

And no, I’m not just channeling bullshit from The Secret Life of Bees, —I was about 16 during this period. Anyway, I remember that these women were dynamic; they had good days, bad days, –we loved cooking, crafting, and everyone had their own favorite thing to do. We watched horror together, and I remember that in no way did it surprise me that they liked horror movies and vampires, –but a decade later, it seems like black culture is an alien, foreign subject, and we’re afraid to enjoy things together. Do yourself a favor: sit down and watch Vampire in Brooklyn on Netflix, –you’ll love it. And let’s stop the idea that black female horror fans don’t exist. Women love vampires, –all of us.Except for maybe the witches on The Vampire Diaries, –they kinda hold a grudge.
