Supernatural… The Anime Series?

So Dear Readers, I recently came across something I never even knew existed – an anime based on the show Supernatural! How did I not know about this?! Of course the second I saw it I had to look into it since I love me some Supernatural.

Supernatural: The Anime Series was released a few weeks ago by Madhouse studios, making it the very first Western TV series to be adapted into an anime. Originally the plan was for to only be available in Japan, if you were a hardcore American fan you had no other choice but to import it. However, they changed their minds and it is available here in the U S of A. Yay! Even better is that a few members of the live-action cast did some voice work for the anime.

The overall storyline for this anime series is the same as it was throughout the original show’s  first two seasons – Sam and Dean Winchester travel the US hunting and killing supernatural beasties all while looking for the yellow-eyed demon that had murdered their mother. But, it’s not exactly the same as the live-action show. The anime contains five episode adaptations from season 1, seven from season 2, one comic book adaptation and nine brand new original stories.

Here are the exact episodes that were adapted from season 1 and 2:

Season 1

  • Skin
  • Home
  • Nightmare
  • Dead Man's Blood
  • Devil's Trap

Season 2

  • Roadkill
  • Heart
  • In My Time of Dying
  • Crossroad Blues
  • What Is and What Should Never Be
  • All Hell Breaks Loose (two parts)

I absolutely love the episode choices, Crossroad Blues is one of my favorite episodes. They also added Dead Man’s Blood, a vampire episode! According to reviews I’ve seen, the vampires play a bigger role in the anime episode than in the live-action episode. Sounds damn good to me!

I can’t wait to watch the whole season, so far I’ve only watched the first episode and I loved it. It is a beautifully done Japanese anime that has a little touch of American in it.  It has a creepier vibe than the original, but it’s still just as entertaining… and Dean looks hot even in cartoon form. I will warn you guys that the anime is way WAY gorier than the live-action. There’s a whole lot of blood in this version, blood that the live-action totally does not have. Think of the live-action as PG-13 and this anime as rated R. If you watch a lot of anime, particularly horror, then you’ll have an idea of what Supernatural: The Anime is like – it’s dark, disturbing and graphic. Gotta’ love it.

Check out a few screenshots below and let me know what you think. Have you seen the anime, if so, what did you think?
