If I were a Vampire…

Have you ever said to yourself, “If I were a vampire…,” then proceeded to list numerous and exciting things you could get away with, say, and do without getting flak from those around you?

Imagine what it would be like if the world was your oyster; “normal” beings can’t get away with much, but if you were an elite member of those who creep around in the night, the possibilities are endless.

I’m going to share what I think I could get away with if I were a blood sucker:

1. Mind Control- If I were a vampire, I’m pretty sure I could have my cake and eat it too. Let’s say I had a controlling boss who thought he or she could push people around; I would use my powers to reverse their train of thought and more importantly, make them give me a killer bonus that was a long time coming.

2. Sex- Even though I have flawless looks, I still would want the mate of my dreams. If people told me I couldn’t date someone out of my league, I’d make it my purpose in life to prove them wrong. With that being said, I’d simply flaunt myself and turn into the most irresistible human being possible. Watch out, Cullen!

3. Athleticism- If I were a member of the undead, I’d be a star athlete. You see vampires in the movies run like nobody’s business; they speed through life and don’t look back. I would join a town track team or simply use my powers mentioned in #1 to get on to an Olympic team and show the world what I was working with.

Eclipse Trailer Has Finally Been Released!

Yay!!! In anticipation for its June 30th release, the trailer for Eclipse has finally been released! Come on, we’ve all been waiting for this ever since we saw New Moon in November, haven’t we? The trailer looks very, very good and looks like the director and producers are going to include the main elements of the book – including the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob that shows itself more than ever in this part of the series, the Volturi’s anger that Bella has not yet been changed, and of course, the fact that that evil villain vampire, Victoria is still on the loose and is out for Bella’s blood.

There are a few things that you may notice from the trailer, besides the fact that Eclipse looks like it’s going to be even better than the book (because Eclipse was actually my least favorite in the series.) One is that Bella’s hair may seem to look…different. It’s not bad but there does seem to be a slight difference in her appearance. This is because after filming New Moon, Kristen Stewart filmed the movie The Runaways where she plays rocker girl Joan Jett. For the part, Kristen was forced to chop off all of her luscious brown locks and go for a much shorter and funkier ‘do. But because director David Slade, and the rest of us, wanted to maintain Bella’s look for the third movie, she wore a wig.

The role of Victoria is also a different Victoria than the one we saw in Twilight. That Victoria was played by Rachelle Lefevre, who was unavailable to reprise the role for Eclipse. Victoria will now be played by Bryce Dallas Howard, who has expressed before what an amazing job she thought Rachelle did and that she was extremely surprised that Rachelle wouldn’t take on the role once again. So are we, Bryce, so are we. But I’m sure Bryce will work just fine as the evil villain.

I am so excited that the trailer has come out! That must mean that the movie is soon on the way right? Oh wait. It’s still three and a half months until that happens. Oh pooh. Well, in the meantime, enjoy the trailer! You can watch it here!

Apotamkin or rather, The Cold One

I’m sure we all clearly remember the scene in Twilight when Bella is beginning to get suspicious that there’s something “special” about Edward and goes home to furiously type things into Google. The camera views of what she pulls up are succinct, yet clear enough to give us the understanding that Bella has come across some Quielette legends stating something about “The Cold One” and how this cold one is a vampire. But,what is The Cold One? Is there actually a vampire known as this?

Well, the closest thing to any vampire legend that would bear any similarity to the legend of The Cold One would be the Apotamkin. This creature is unlike most other vampire folklore because it’s exclusive to the Native American people. The Apotamkin was a bona fide vampire however, with all the abilities and super strengths of other vampires that we know. It was believed among Native Americans that the Apotamkin would feast on the blood of any animal or human. And it got its name just the way you would expect – Apotamkins were very cold to the touch, mostly because they were dead bodies.

However, it’s been said that the Native American never really believed in the Apotamkin and that it was a cautionary tale told to children. This was used especially when warning children about wandering off by themselves with no supervision.

And, as for Twilight, Stephenie Meyer has said that in regards to her version and her version alone, she had no similarities in mind when writing the book. She simply needed to create random bits of Edward’s character and piece them together, cryptically, with mythical vampire folklore. Clever, though, how perhaps even without knowing it, Meyer has combined her own imagination of the Quileutte legend, with actual Native American vampire folklore!

Kristen Stewart Talks About Eclipse

I really thought we’d be waiting until at least the end of March to start hearing about mega Eclipse promotion, but Kristen Stewart has kicked things off with this audio interview. In the interview, she talks about Bella, and of course, the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob that becomes incredibly confusing (and incredibly sad, if you’re rooting for Team Jacob.)

Love her or hate her, I think that Kristen really does seem to have a great grip of what her character’s all about. I guess you would hope so after filming three movies, and hopefully reading the books. She talks about how honest Bella is and about how that honesty came to be very hard to deal with when Bella lied to herself about how in love with Jacob she really was. I have to say, reading that part, I was screaming “NO! NO!”, just like Bella seemed to be as well.

She also talks about the scene where Bella, Jacob, and Edward are waiting for the evil vampires to come to the field, and they’re in a tent all together. I personally think that was one of the best parts of the whole book, except maybe for the fact that it seemed to go on and on and on. But Edward swallowing his own pride when Bella curled into Jacob for warmth on that freezing cold night? It just once again, reinforces how much he loves her and how much he’ll suffer just for her to be okay.

But besides the interview, what else caught my eye when it comes to Eclipse is this new poster. Is this the new official movie poster? A teaser poster came out a little while ago but I have to say, I’m kind of digging this one a little more. It just looks a little crisper and cleaner. And I love that they’ve incorporated the ribbon from the book cover! And Bella, of course, is never bad either!

No, it’s not poetry, –it’s an awesome album inspired by shows like True Blood, and the Twilight films, and novels. The title track of the album is my favorite, ‘Vampire Love’, –but the whole CD is pretty awesome. Chazz deMeyer has kind of a trippy, blues-y electronic thing going that really fits the True Blood music style.

Chazz deMeyer Exclusive Interview

Q: Tell us about Vampire Love, from your own perspective; was there any particular message you wanted to send to vampire fans?

A: When ever I start to write a song I usually complete the music before I start writing the lyrics. Most people find this odd, but the completed music seems to force me into a direction that easily falls into place. I was driving a long distance to a family reunion, listing to the music track, and the words Vampire Love suddenly fell into place. I pulled over to let my wife drive and the lyrics flowed out effortlessly. I couldn’t wait to return to my studio to apply them to the tracks.

To me Vampires, although infinitely more powerful than us humans, also are frail and succumb to many of the pitfalls of life that most of us share. Vampire Love is a song about the love between a Vampire and a human with all the subtleties and nuances of any true love romance. The message is classic, we always fear what we don’t understand, and all too often never take the time to see beyond the initial response. I believe this new series of Vampire stories takes us to that next level for us humans as well as Vampires.

Q: We have to know, –what’s your favorite vampire movie?

A: Well, the one that scared me the most was “Bram Stokers Dracula”. For me it embodied all the horror and fear of vampires I envisioned through my childhood fascination with the super natural. Although the time period coincides what many of us that are older may embrace as ‘the age of vampires”, the stage directing and lighting brought the stark un-reality to life.

Secondary, I love the “Underworld” series. I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for special effects with a strong story line!

Q: This album is both macabre and romantic; can you say what the inspiration was behind a few of the songs?

A: Sure, I’ve pretty much talked about VL, but “Love Type” also carries that vampire element. It’s a play on the words “blood type”. The same attraction that Edward of “Twilight” and Bill of “True Blood” could not suppress for their lovers, the same hold true for us non-vampires. The analogy that love is in our blood and DNA might account for our overwhelming, and somewhat uncontrollable emotions when we find our true soul mate. Incidentally, I’ve found mine!

The Song “Forever” also romantic, but searches the possibility of two people that have always been together throughout time, and will always find each other for eternity. The line “love this strong takes more that one lifetime” gives us that possibility.

Q: Were there any particular scenes in Twilight, True Blood, or other vampire shows/books/films that inspired lyrics or whole songs?

A: Vampire love was inspired after falling in love with the HBO series “True Blood” and reading the “Twilight” series of books. It was the perfect combination of true love and the super natural. For me it viewed Vampires human side, after all they were once human. Putting aside all the old stereo type images of Vampires and giving us a deeper perspective into there forever “every day life”, fears, dreams and conflicts. Although quite cheesy and camp at times, what I gleamed from the series that Vampires can actually fall in love, and to me, love is the most powerful emotion on earth. Perhaps more powerful than a Vampire’s thirst for blood!

Q: It wasn’t too long ago that you experienced some real life horror of your own, and conquered it; can you tell us a little about the accident, and the book that followed your convalescence?

A: OK, when I was a young boy in the 60’s I was talented enough to play and tour with some bands with national exposure and moderate success. Unfortunately, I was in an automobile accident that left me paralyzed from the neck down. I was twenty four at that time. It was a dark time in my life, but good fortune came my way and I recovered most of the use of my right side, and very limited use of my left side. Pretty much like a stroke victim. But as bad as that might sound, I found my soul mate. She was a student therapist at the rehab I was at. It was love at first site, and we’ve been together for thirty three years now. So you can see where the romantic in me comes from.

We have a great life together, but I sometimes wonder if I could have made my mark in music if things turned out differently. The decision to write, record and produce seemed obtainable at this later time in my life. I wrote “Recovery” as a catharsis. I never expected it to turn out well, or that it would open up the possibility of a career once again in music. The entire album is about my life before and after my accident. Elly, my wife, convinced me to write the book “The Fire Within” and tell the whole story in detail. I’m glad I did, it was the best therapy I’ve ever experienced even though it’s thirty three years later. The book has moved many people, which surprised me mostly because I never thought myself, or my accomplishments to be extraordinary. Q: This is the second album since your recovery, do you feel that Vampire Love symbolizes any important landmark in your life so far, or was this just a creative effort that happened to come out really well?

A: Interesting question. I’ve always felt any accomplishment is an important landmark. In fact, I’ve always set forth my life around obtaining my goals, and of course accepting any of the results that may have fell short of them. But, on the other hand I’ve put a great deal of time and effort into Vampire Love and it was important to me that technically as well as creatively it would be the best I’ve done to date, and for me it is! This is a difficult time to market music, there is so much of it. If I had to judge my success by sales than I guess I’ve had very little, but if I only judge my success to my personal satisfaction, then the Vampire Love CD is a hit.

And the People Choose…Vampires!!

If the whole vampire craze that has taken over the world wasn’t clear to you before, it certainly should be after last night! It was then that the People’s Choice Awards gave away seven – count em, seven! – awards to movies, TV shows, and music that are all vampire related! Here’s the rundown for you on who won what.

The 36th Annual People’s Choice Awards were handed out on Wednesday night. And while all you Twilight fans might think that each of the seven awards was given to the famous saga, only five of them were. Some may actually say four, but look again and you’ll see that one of those awards probably wouldn’t have been given without the famous movies. So, just what what awards did Twilight win exactly? The first of course, was for “Favorite Movie.” This actually puzzles me a bit because it seems to be that the movie that won was Twilight, which came out in 2008. I would think the award was actually for New Moon, which did come out last year. But what do I know?

But there were a few other awards that the Twilight saga also took home. One was for “Favorite On-Screen Team”, which is obviously the team of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, who play Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively. Taylor Lautner also took home an award for “Favorite Breakout Movie Actor.” Yes, Taylor does actually play a smelly werewolf in the movies but, who can think of Jacob Black and not think of vampires in the same thought? And of course, for “Favorite Franchise” (seriously, we’re voting on franchises now?), Twilight picked that one up too. So where does the fifth Twilight award come from? It actually went to the band Paramore, for “Favorite Rock Band.” And where did I get the Twilight connection from? Well, no one had heard of Paramore before Twilight and now you can’t hear their breakout song, “Decode” without thinking of Bella’s and Edward’s relationship. And thanks to that song, Paramore ended up on the Billboard charts and on the Hot 100.

So, what other two awards were given out to vamps? Well, it may not shock you to know that Vampire Diariestook home the award for “Favorite New TV Drama”, very deservedly so, and True Blood took home the award for “Favorite TV Obsession.” Also, I think we would all agree, very deservedly so.

So, from last night’s People’s Choice Awards, it’s clear that vamps are here, they’re big, and they’re going to be around for a long while yet!

Midnight Sun: The Twilight Prequel

I don’t know why I’m just hearing about this now, but it seems as though there may be a prequel to Twilight called Midnight Sun. Of course, when I was first told of this, I started digging to find out more. Turns out, there is a book that Stephenie Meyer has started writing. It is called Midnight Sun and it is a prequel to Twilight. However, it’s not out on store shelves yet and when it will be is anyone’s guess at this point.

Midnight Sun essentially tells the story of Twilight again but from Edward’s point of view as opposed to Bella’s. Apparently, the book delves into things such as what Edward is thinking while he and Bella are lying down in the meadow, after he’s shown her his sparkly self for the first time, and what he’s thinking when he laughs sometimes in Twilight and Bella is confused as to why. The book is meant to give readers a better understanding of Edward’s character. So, why aren’t we all reading Midnight Sun as we speak?

It was this past summer that the first twelve chapters of Midnight Sun had been completed by Stephenie Meyer when it all got leaked onto the Internet. Stephenie is being very gracious about the leak, saying that it was accidental and that she was not pointing fingers or naming names. She even went so far as to provide the first twelve chapters on her website, in order to be fair to fans that had not received a leaked copy. (You can view it here.) But still, she also says that she just can’t write it at this time. It’s too ‘in the spotlight’ and Meyer says that she needs to ‘feel alone with the book’ before she can complete it. If that’s the case, we might never get to read it! This Twilight-tania is not going to die down anytime too soon. Also on her website, Meyer states that if she were to try to continue writing it now, “James would probably win and the Cullens would all die,” so the reason for the temporary hold of writing the book seems obvious. Still, I have glanced over the first couple of pages of Midnight Sun and it looks fabulous! Integral people associated with the movie, such as Catherine Hardwicke and Robert Pattinson, were allowed to see the manuscript while they were filming the movie, before any of it had been leaked online.

For those that have not yet received a leaked copy and would like to peruse a legally-obtained copy, check it out on Stephenie Meyer’s site and let us know what you think. Just please don’t make copies or redistribute it. It’s not very nice. Plus, it could push publication of Midnight Sun back who knows how much longer!

What Twilight Book Cover Do You Like Best?

As the Twilight movies become more popular, the original covers of the books are now being replaced by pictures of the movie posters. This cover of New Moon, for instance, now has a picture of Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in character and in a passionate embrace. This disturbs me. Not because I don’t like the actors, but because the series is not about them. It’s about the characters. And I think that newbook covers like this take away from that. Twilight was brilliant before the actors stepped into the parts, and I think that these covers make the series famous for the wrong thing.

Another thing that bothers me about the new book covers is that there was a lot of thought that went behind the original book covers. Each original cover for Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn holds a lot of meaning for what happens in the book. And the new covers have no meaning. Except that now the books have been exploited beyond imagination and that you can look at pretty people while you read them.

Looking at this breakdown of the meaning behind the original covers of the Twilight saga, you can see how changing them into movie posters is just plain wrong.

Twilight – The picture of the girl’s hands holding the apple is symbolic of Bella holding forbidden fruit. The fact that the entire cover is black and white, and the apple is red is symbolic of Bella’s blood that is forbidden fruit to Edward. He wants it so desperately but he must not take it.

New Moon – The picture of the rose blossom that’s falling apart is symbolic of Bella physically coming apart after Edward’s departure. The petals are colored red to symbolize the blood that Bella’s heart is bleeding in Edward’s absence. It’s no coincidence that the falling petal looks like a tear.

Eclipse – This cover shows a red ribbon that’s broken in half. This represents the love that Bella has for both Jacob and Edward and how she is being torn apart having to choose between the two. Bella feels as though she is being ripped in half because it seems as though her love for the two can’t coexist in the same world.

Breaking Dawn – I actually used to think that the pawn on the cover of this cover represented Edward and that the Queen chess piece represented Bella, becoming more powerful and important than Edward as she merged into her new life. Turns out, both pieces represent Bella. The red piece symbolizes her as a weak human, filled with red blood. Her transformation into the pale Queen is shown much larger, and much stronger than her former human self.

A quick look at the meanings behind the book covers shows just how important they are to the entire series. Messing with that is such a shame.

Never Ending Emo Vampires

Let me set up the scene for you – you have the full moon shining down on the dark dismal cemetery and there, sitting upon an aged mausoleum is a vampire. This vampire is just sitting there staring into the nothing, brooding all serious-like. This here is your classic emo vampire, the vampire that sits and sulks all night long, the vampire that hates the vampirism he is a slave to.

Self loathing vampires aren’t anything new. While many think that the famous Twilight’s Edward started it all that is actually far from being true. Yea Edward hates what he is; he thinks he is a monster and blah blah whine whine. But before Edward you had Angel from the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Angel was just as whiny, he hated himself for the centuries he spent as the evil Angelus, brutally torturing and killing countless innocents. There are a handful of episodes featuring Angel simply sitting in the dark brooding silently. But where am I going with this? Read on…

You see, before Angel you then had Louis de Pointe du Lac, the tortured vampire in the renowned novels by Anne Rice. Louis, like the others, he was a slave to the curse he despised, he felt that he was eternally damned. His sufferings were more than you could bear. Oh, but dear readers it doesn’t end there, before Louis there was another hate filled vampire and before that one yet another. But where does this long list even begin? Cue Varney the Vampire.

Varney the Vampyre came out in 1847, years before the influential Dracula by Bram Stoker. It was Varney that had part in inspiring Bram for Varney was the vampire that had fangs, left two puncture wounds on the necks of his victims, had hypnotic powers, and had superhuman strength – all ideas used by Stoker. Anyway, Varney was possibly the very first sympathetic vampire, a vampire that hates what he is.

It started in 1847 and has lasted until 2009, so chances are the moody self loathing vampires will continue to last for all time. Oh boy.

Is it a Vampire? Or a Vampyre?

When we submerse ourselves in everything that’s vampire related, we often find that the words “vampire” and “vampyre” are used interchangeably. But are these two things really one in the same? And if so, why the different spellings? I know that the very idea of vampires lends itself to interpretations of many different kinds but, are we really reinventing the English language here? No. There is actually a very clear distinction between the two and we thought that here, we’d break it down for you.

Quite simply, vampires are fictional. They are human corpses that have become reanimated and perhaps even dug themselves out of a grave. Vampires are also usually pretty scary because they’re really only concerned with killing other humans for blood. Edward Cullen, Sookie Stackhouse, and Elena Gilbert are some of our most favorite vampires. However, they are not real.

Vampyres, on the other hand, are very real and even walk among us on earth. Vampyres are individuals that believe that they have a real physical condition that requires them to drink blood at regular intervals. Whether that blood comes from a human or an animal is usually up to the vampyre and their close circle of friends. Some vampyres also use energy to feed off instead of actual blood. Unlike vampires, however, they are usually not reanimated and haven’t had to dig themselves out of any graves before they were able to walk around unnoticed. Seregon O’Dassey, Lady CG, and many of you are some of our most favorite vampyres!

So while you might find that ‘vampire’ and ‘vampyre’ are often used to mean one and the same thing, you now know differently.
