Vampire Diaries: New Characters and their Quick Demises

It seems as though the producers of Vampire Diaries hopped on the vampire bandwagon at just the right time; the characters are young and fearless and the plot deliciously thickens week after week … but there’s one question that needs to be answered: why do new characters get killed off or disappear so quickly? Let’s take a look at 3 different examples…

Vicki – A small-town girl with a ton of baggage, Vicki had great potential to be a bitchin’ vampire’s apprentice. This character had a jaded outlook on life, and that’s what made her so unique; her teen angst shrouded her inner little girl. But when push came to shove (and it did), the producers decided to get rid of her … was her would-be storyline too strong for the overall show’s plot? Anyway, Damon brainwashed her family members after her untimely death. Don’t you think Caroline should have gone instead?

Lexi – This age-old blonde bombshell rolls into town to celebrate Stefan’s birthday like a good friend ought to, but Damon has other plans in mind. Long story short, Lexi finally got Stefan to admit his true intentions for coming back to Mystic Falls; however, she came off as a home wrecker after Elena stopped-by the Salvatore’s humble abode. Damon ended up framing the heart of gold time traveler just to cover his own selfish tracks. Was it jealousy that got in the way of brotherly bonding, or was Damon just a dead and heartless soul?

Anna – One of the more useless characters on Vampire Diaries, Anna is a user and abuser. She comes into the picture attempting to seduce the naïve Jeremy Gilbert, but it turns out that she’s just a mama’s girl. It was centuries ago that in the midst of the great vampire hunt, Anna’s mother Pearl was put away for all eternity with other practicing vamps. In the latest episode, those lost souls were “rescued” and Anna walked away scot-free with mama in tow … supposedly never to be seen again.

David Anders Joins ‘The Vampire Diaries’

It speaks to the success of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ that the show is already able to pull in such big-time guest stars in its very first season. Now the well-loved David Anders is set to join the ranks of other ‘Vampire Diaries’ guest stars such as Sean Faris, Melinda Clarke and Jasmine Guy.

Anders is best known for his roles on action-packed series like ‘Alias,’ ‘Heroes’ and, most recently, ‘24,’ Anders is expected to join the cast for a couple episodes as Jeremy and Elena’s uncle Jonathan.

Us fans of the series have already seen a different Jonathan Gilbert in the show’s flashbacks, the man who was a crucial player in the Mystic Falls vampire hunt of 1864. If the events of the most recent episode are anything to go by, it seems his namesake may arrive in town just in time for yet another big showdown with the no-longer entombed vampires.

Sources say that Uncle Jonathan won’t be coming into town to help out, but he’ll be there to stir some more drama and more trouble for the poor folks of Mystic Falls. We’ll just have to wait and see if that’s true or not. Unfortunately, David Anders won’t be seen in the next episode but instead will first appear in the April 15 episode and will recur throughout the season.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ returns Thursday, March 25, at 8 p.m. with a new episode titled “A Few Good Men.” We don’t know what this big episode is about yet, but from the looks of the promo (below) it’s no doubt going to be a sexy and spine-tingling ride.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 14

Well, the little subplot between Matt and Caroline is moving along at a snail’s pace, but besides that, things are definitely picking up. As predicted, Elena was snatched, along with Bonnie, in order to make a trade: the grimoire for Elena. The difference is, that despite all manner of begging from Stefan, Damon isn’t going for it. While Elena and Bonnie hang out in a hotel room with Anna and her douchebag boyfriend, Damon tries to get Bonnie’s grandmother to open the door to Katherine’s tomb. No cigar. Jeremy Gilbert, meanwhile, is getting more and more pitiful as time goes on.

Despite eventually getting convinced to going out to ‘Duke’s party’, he chooses to bring Anna as his date. Guess where the big party is? Right in the old cemetery, next to the church ruins, where underneath, about two dozen hungry vampires are about to pour forth, should the vampires involved have their way. Stefan went to Gram’s house and figured out where Elena and Bonnie were via a “simple locator spell”, then busts them out of the hotel room where Anna and her undead jock were holding them hostage. After cutting through all the drama, Bonnie and her grandmother agree to open the tomb so that Damon can get Katherine and leave.

The only thing is, Damon isn’t in the mood to work together with everybody, so Elena collects herself, and goes to convince Damon that they won’t betray him again. Elena doesn’t apologize exactly, but she does persuade Damon that she will help him get Katherine out of the tomb. Damon puts his trust in her once again, and they head out to the tomb to meet Bonnie, her grandmother, Stefan, and his big flamethrower. Over at the big cemetery bash, Jeremy and Anna head off into the woods, where within thirty seconds, they kiss, she says she’s leaving, and her other boyfriend smashes him on the head with a crowbar.

Anna packs up Jeremy to take him off to the tomb, but she ends up having to deal with Stefan. The door to the tomb is open, and Damon hauls Elena in with him, for leverage against Bonnie and her grandmother just closing the door again. Everybody’s in the tomb; Anna, Damon, Elena, –Anna forces Elena to give blood to her mother, which of course, brings some screams from Elena, which brings Stefan a’runnin’ in. Problem with that is, there’s a seal still on the tomb, even if the door is open. The seal keeps the vampires from leaving, so Damon, Stefan, Anna, and her mother, are trapped.

But Elena can leave. Bonnie convinces her grandmother to break the seal long enough for everyone to get out, but Damon is freaking out, because Katherine isn’t in the tomb. Anna and her mother disappear into the night, promising to leave Jeremy alone, and giving directions to where he is. Outside, the witches are having some serious issues, –the spell is taking a lot out of both Bonnie, and her grandmother. They manage to keep the spell going strong, while Elena goes in and convinces Damon to leave the tomb, even though Katherine isn’t in there.

Damon, Elena, and Stefan make it outside, and there’s a really sweet moment where a heartbroken Damon gets a hug from Elena. Elena takes care of Jeremy, who says he thought he passed out, before she takes off to Bonnie’s. Apparently though, his recent encounter with Anna has only fueled his fascination with vampires. Damon is waiting for Anna and her mother, angry enough to rip them both to pieces; he accuses Anna of knowing that Katherine wasn’t there. Her mother says that Katherine escaped because she promised the guard she’d turn him, and Anna continues that Katherine was last seen in Chicago, in the 80’s.

She apologizes, telling him that Katherine knew all along where Damon was, that she just didn’t care enough to find him. Damon leaves, and is joined by Stefan at their home, in front of the fire. Presumably, there’s a modicum of male bonding. Elena, Bonnie and her grandmother spend the night together, but the spell weakened her grandmother, and killed her. Altogether, a very sad episode; not only does Jeremy lose yet another girl, but he also seems to be getting a little too obsessed with the whole vampires thing. This episode had nothing at all to do with Alaric Saltzman, so the next episode, we ought to be seeing more of him.

The whole Katherine thing, whoa, I didn’t see that coming at all. Now I’m almost positive, there’s going to be a big Katherine/Damon/Stefan/Elena bash at some point in the future. I also think that after Bonnie’s grandmother dying because of the strain of performing a spell to save Damon and Stefan, that Bonnie is going to be a little less sympathetic with the vampire plight in the future. And what’s the deal with the vampire popping out of the tomb at the end? Damon was all upset, he didn’t know that bursting his little blood bag would wake up an angry, Civil War-era vampire. But he’s up, and looks like he’s feeling frisky.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1 Episode 12

The vampire that almost attacked Elena in the last episode poses as a pizza guy for an invitation inside Elena’s house. Stefan gives Elena vervain, and vervain jewelry for her family and friends. She gives out the jewelry, but after a creepy phonecall, Stefan also gives Elena the vampire compass so she can detect her stalker. Caroline and Matt are getting a little closer, but Matt is also learning the grand trade of bus-boy at the Mystic Grill, which is a serious blow to his self-esteem.

I’m just going to lay the whole subplot out right here; Matt is insecure, and Caroline has a big mouth. You do the math. Eventually, when Caroline’s foot lands in her mouth, they have a fight, and argue a little over Matt’s decision to forego the next level of their relationship. Caroline walks out, Matt follows, and they kiss! It’s really sweet, but a lot happens in this episode, so focus! On the other side of subplot land, Bonnie is feeling the heat, and is kinda getting interested in the bartender at the Grill; Ben. Bonnie asks him out, which is her way of encouraging Caroline with Matt. Likewise, Jeremy’s new friend Anna is getting more interested, but Jeremy is feeling stalked.

Elena and Jenna finally talk about Elena’s real parents. Jenna only knows the basic story: Mr. Gilbert was leaving the office, a 16 year old runaway, Isabelle, arrived in labor. Mr. Gilbert found her a place to stay, but Isabelle disappeared, leaving the baby behind. Mr. Gilber, a doctor, did all necessary paperwork, and kept the new baby quiet. Speaking of Katherine, Damon is looking for Emily’s grimoire, so Bonnie is the first stop that Damon makes to find it. The bartender at the Grill breaks up Bonnie and Damon’s little talk, and Damon goes back to his father’s journal to find the grimoire. Stefan offers to help Damon, but Damon isn’t ready to trust Stefan’s reason; he just wants Damon to leave.

The strange, new vampire attacks Elena while she’s getting ready for the 50’s theme dance, but Stefan saves the day. Damon and Stefan decide that all they should go to the dance and try to catch the vampire, because now that he’s been invited in, he can’t be allowed to roam free. Jenna and Alaric hook up at the dance to, as chaperones, and get into a conversation about Alaric’s dead wife, –guess what her name was? Isabelle, –dun dun dun. Jenna makes the connection immediately. The new vampire is also hanging around. Elena’s brother is on punch duty at the dance too, so the whole gang is here, in one place, packed in for major drama potential.

Elena’s friends don’t think much of her hanging around with Stefan and Damon, but Elena brushes them off, –since Damon is hot, who cares? The creepy vampire in the hoodie is watching the scene, you know, acting malevolent. Meanwhile, Anna shows up to stalk Jeremy some more, and offers to help with punch duty. Anna is also getting impatient to see Jeremy’s ancestor’s journal. And when she does, she gets a little frustrated, –look at that, Jeremy’s new friend is a vampire! She takes off, to get whatever it is, out of her eye. And speaking of people who get too overzealous in their questions, Alaric accidently gets a little too interested in Damon, when they talk for a moment. Remember, Alaric knows it was Damon who killed his wife, –a woman named Isabelle, who might be Elena’s biological mother. Damon senses the interrogation, and Alaric backs off.

Anna and the guy stalking Elena, Noah, not only know each other, but they’re also seeking to free Katherine, –and the reason Noah wants to screw with her, is because she looks so much like Katherine. Noah leads Damon and Stefan off the mark, by letting some other guy wear his hoodie, and meanwhile, takes off after Elena. Elena runs, is cornered, but puts up a surprisingly good fight with sharpened pencils. Stefan and Damon show up in the nick of time, of course, and torture Noah for information. He tells them that Johnathan Gilbert’s journal holds the answers for finding the grimoire, –but refuses to tell Damon and Stefan who he’s working with.

Anna watches, then takes off. Alaric also ssees the confrontation, and Damon takes off to find out what Alaric saw. Damon attempts to ‘compel’ him to tell the truth, but despite Alaric’s answers, as Damon walks away, –he is seen clutching a vervain bloom in his fist. Stefan offers again to help Damon find a way to open the tomb. Damon hesitantly agrees, but with some doubts. And he should have, since Stefan tells Elena later that he was lying. The evening winds down with Alaric asking Jenna out, and her accepting. And with the discovery of who else Anna is working with, –remember the cute bartender that Bonnie’s interested in? Yep, that’s Anna’s boyfriend.

A lot happens this episode, new characters are revealed, and one them dies; too bad. Noah was hot! Not as hot as Damon, but oh well. Hopefully, Damon doesn’t end up like Boone in Lost, –that would suck fiercely. FYI, if you’re not a Lost fan, Boone is played by the same actor as Damon, and he dies in the first season. Also, what’s with Damon calling the new vamp a dickhead? Is that a word that’s allowed on TV now? I didn’t think CW was a cable channel. Elena and Stefan lying to Damon about something as important to him as Katherine, is bullshit.

He deserves to have -somebody-, allbeit maybe not, Katherine, Evil Queen of the Mummy Vampires, but someone nice. Like Elena, who can keep him on track. Oh well. The thing is, the whole ‘lying to Damon’ thing, is definitely a grenade waiting to go off. It’s incredibly mean. I do sense that at some point, Katherine is going to get out, and when she does, the shit will hit the fan. I don’t think she’ll be out very long, –but this stuff is probably going to go on during the second season, if they have one, and hopefully, they do!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 11

Finally! God, months without the Vampire Diaries, and for what? Those lazy Hollywood jerk-offs. And the last episode was left at such a crazy cliff-hanger! Gosh! Elena Gilbert, trapped under her wrecked car, while a vampire advances, –but Damon shows up, and saves the day, freeing her from the vehicle. The second Damon shows, the advancing vampire instantly takes off, and Damon carries Elena off. And to think all this could have been avoided by just taking time to cool off that temper; remember, Elena sped off after seeing the photo of Katherine for the first time.

Apparently, that Alaric Saltzman guy is in Mystic Fall because he has a vendetta against vampires, particularly Damon, –there’s a whole series of touchy-feely flashbacks, where Alaric is pictured with his wife. Then later, we see Damon munching on his wife in one of these flashbacks. Now we know what Alaric’s deal is, but we’re still kinda vague on why he has that family ring, like Stefan and Damon.

The next morning Elena wakes up with Damon in his car, and surprise! they’re in Georgia. After some argument, Elena gets off her high horse, and calms down, after she gets to ignore a phone call from a very worried Stefan. This gets Stefan all bent out of shape, and he takes off to find Elena’s best friend, Bonny can use her power to tell him where Elena is. Bonny tries but can’t do it, because her magic is blocked by something psychological, as her grandmother explains. To face her fear, Bonny goes back to the church ruins where she was possessed by her ancestor Emily, and the crystal was destroyed.

Damon is still trying to find a way to unlock the tomb full of icky mummified vampires, including Katherine. Hence the trip to Georgia, where he meets a long lost romantic interest, Bree, consequently a witch, whom he hopes can figure out how to unlock Katherine’s tomb. Bree claims there’s no way to unlock it, –but something weird is going on with her. At Katherine’s tomb, Bonnie is trying to erase her mental block, when she senses someone watching her. Before she has time to properly flip out, the ground collapses, and Bonny is face to face with the door to Katherine’s tomb.

Stefan, still looking for Bonny; shows up at her grandmother’s house. Bonny’s grandmother know Stefan is a vampire, and tells him that she does trust him to keep Bonny safe, after explaining how he can find Bonny. Stefan takes off to help Bonny, while back in Georgia, Elena is trying to get plastered with the grown-ups. Add contributing to the delinquency of a minor to Damon’s long list of crimes. There’s a brief conversation about how Elena could possibly be identical to Katherine. Then Aunt Jenna calls, and Elene takes off to talk to her. Someone grabs her, and she drops her phone.

Damon takes off to find Elena, and gets the ass-kicking of his life from another vampire, who promptly dumps gasoline all over him, and gets ready to set him on fire. It’s Alexi’s boyfriend, grief-crazed, and ready to fry Damon for killing her. Elena manages to talk Alexi’s boyfriend out of killing Damon. Damon rips Bree’s heart out of her chest for betraying him, –even after she’s told him that it’s possible to unlock Katherine’s tomb if he uses Emily’s grimoire. But he has to find it first.

In Mystic Falls, Stefan finally shows up to save Bonny, and brings her back to her grandmother’s house, –apparently, Stefan used to know her, back when she was “Sheila”. Later, Stefan and Elena have a long heartfelt talk, –and a couple important things are revealed. One, it was Stefan who saved Elena from her parents’ sunken car, and bam! Elena was adopted. Aunt Jenna is pissed when Elena gets home, but not for long, –Elena throws her adoption in Jenna’s face, and heads upstairs. At the ‘Mystic Grill’ Alaric sets eyes on Damon, where we get another flashback, showing Alaric’s memory of Damon killing his wife.

Throughout all of this, Jeremy has been piecing together the history of Mystic Falls, which means delving into vampire related subject matter. He makes a new friend in the library; a girl approximately around his age, and they get to studying the similarities of their ancestors’ journals. Most likely, their ancestors were members of the vampire hunting posse, with misguided, and well-meaning intentions. It’s nice to see him around a decent looking girl again; with any luck, she won’t turn out to be some kind of raging supernatural psycho.

I like that Damon and Elena are getting closer, because Damon is hotter, more hardcore, and has the better sense of humor. But as their relationship seems to brighten a little bit, Damon’s list of past and present crimes just gets longer, and longer. I’m kind of nervous to see whether or not he’ll survive the rest of the season. Gosh I hope so. Usually, just as things look like they’re turning up, something horrible happens. That’s how they keep us hanging over the edge, waiting for the next show! I’ll be there next week, with all the details on the latest episode.

The Vampire Diaries Season 1, Episode 10

Despite the last episode tying pretty much everything up, and introducing a couple new characters, this episode was pretty action packed. Logan is turned down an invitation, –thank god, since Logan is dead. He grabs a jogger for a snack, and heads out for the night. Jeremy Gilbert is reading and learning more about the Gilbert family, and his ancestor’s vampire fascination, and begins drawing again, –drawing vampires. Stefan and Elena are still on the outs, because Stefan still wants to move, until the Salvatore brothers find out another vampire is up and running around again. Before the big discovery, Stefan and Damon were making plans to leave, –and separately, though Damon is reluctant.

The sheriff is enlisting Damon’s help, while her daughter Caroline is still nursing a blossoming friendship with Matt Donovan. Seems like everyone is in a state or limbo until Logan is discovered as the new vampire. Damon and Stefan now have to stay in town to eradicate the rabid vampire problem; this means more Stefan and Elena time. Damon uses Caroline and the compass to track Logan down, and ends up shot full of wooden bullets, and completely blank as to who turned Logan into a vampire, –because it wasn’t him, Stefan, Vickie, or Lexi. We-eird. So was it the new guy, Alaric? Either way, Logan is very cranky and very curious about the Salvatore’s day-walking abilities.

The shit hits the fan at Career Day: Matt gets all soulful and talkative with Elena, and Caroline sees, –maybe not the best move, buddy. Jeremy starts trying to make up with Tyler Lockwood who isn’t at all interested. After a brief scuffle, Mayor Lockwood takes the boys outside and tries to force them to fight it out. Tyler and Jeremy are rescued by Alaric, –the new history teacher. Inside the school, Logan shows up to stir some shit up, alerting Stefan, who calls Damon, –Damon is severely pissed after being shot. Everyone who knows about Logan’s death, the sheriff and the “Council”, Stefan, Damon, are all in hot pursuit. Elena connects the dots when she hears about Logan trying to insist on an invitation from Aunt Jenna the night before.

Logan takes off after he unsuccessfully tries to threaten Stefan for the secret of walking in daylight, and Elena gets the explanation from Stefan. Logan snatches Caroline, and drives off with her unconscious in the car, but it isn’t long before he’s intercepted by Damon and Stefan. Stefan takes Caroline home and leaves Damon to kill Logan, –the sheriff is on her way after Damon radios her from the CB in Logan’s SUV. Damon lets Logan go however, when he tells the crow-bar wielding vampire that there’s another way to break the spell on the tomb under the old church.

While Tyler punches Jeremy for trying to reconcile with him, and the new guy Alaric somehow manages to kill Logan in the parking lot of the building where he’s been stashing his victims, –Elena is driving Stefan home. And they get biz-zay! Yup, looks like Stefan and Elena are back on track. But not for long. While Stefan is fetching Elena an after-sex glass of water, Elena wanders around Stefan’s room and sees the photo of Katherine. Uh-oh. Elena takes off, leaving the vervain necklace behind, and drives like a lunatic down the road away from Stefan’s home. She slams into some psycho, standing in the middle of the road, and her car flips, –the figure on the road stands and approaches her. Then they leave us hanging!

That bites; aren’t we all dedicated enough? They could have told us what happened! We would have tuned in next week if they had told us! Damn it! All right, rant over. I don’t know about you guys, but I was really worried about Damon there, –and what’s the deal with the whole other way to break the spell on the tomb? And the other vampires who want to open it? Why? Maybe Katherine was important to more vampires than just Stefan and Damon. I suspect Alaric, –what the hell was with him killing Logan? Seems like a pretty bold move, and besides, it didn’t look like he was using any real vampire powers to kill Logan. Though he must have known what Logan was when he killed him.

Maybe Alaric isn’t a vampire, just a weird vampire hunter type. He might look all sweet and innocent, the rugged puppy-dog face, etc., but I dunno. I think the whole good guy routine is laid on a little too thick to mean anything except raging undercover psycho. On the other hand, maybe it was Alaric that Elena smashed with her car, or a totally new different vampire! God, I can’t wait for the next episode. I’m practically salivating. Plus, I wonder what the hell Elena is going to say to Stefan if she survives her little rendezvous with the crazy vampire she hit with her car. I almost forgot that Elena had no clue that she and Katherine were practically identical. Don’t worry, we’ll be the first to let you know what happens next week!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 9

This is a really busy episode; questions are answered, and a new character is introduced. First of all, it’s becoming more clear that Emily is haunting Bonnie, and she wants something. There’s a little bit of weirdness between Matt and Caroline that only gets worse when Caroline confronts Matt after school, wanting to know what’s going on between them now; Matt kind of shuts her down, and takes off. Bonnie and Elena discuss Emily, and Elena is determined to get Caroline and Bonnie talking again. Meanwhile, Alaric Saltzman is introduced: this guy is definitely a vampire, –has a ring like Stefan and Damon. And for some reason, he seems to want to get really close to the Gilbert family. First he offers Jeremy extra credit, so that he can make up his grade, then later, starts getting all cuddly with the freshly single Aunt Jenna.

Stefan talks with Elena, and tells her he plans to “back off from school”, but she sees that he really wants to stay away from her. Damon approaches Bonnie again about the crystal, and warns her about Emily’s presence. Bonnie throws the necklace in a field on the way to Elena’s house, after telling Elena about Damon bothering her. Elena asks Stefan about the necklace, to find out from Damon what the deal is, and later that night, after Caroline apologizes and the girls work things out, the necklace appears again in Bonnie’s bag. Stefan warms up more to Damon, who has been trying to form a truce, in order to find out more about the necklace. Damon knows Stefan wants something, but they go on bonding a bit more.

After a brief fight over the re-appearance of the necklace, the girls work things out again, and Bonnie explains to Caroline that she’s a witch. They decide to have a seance to see what Emily wants. Meanwhile, after bringing up the sore subject of Katherine’s false love with Damon, Stefan asks about the necklace. They argue and things almost get nasty, but then Damon reveals his master plan. He plans to bring Katherine back. The necklace belonged to Katherine, who gave it to Emily, –Bonnie’s ancestor, and Katherine’s handmaid, who used the necklace to seal Katherine and twenty-seven other vampires in a tomb beneath the church, while it burned down. Stefan believed that Katherine died in the church, but she was only sealed below. Damon wants to bring Katherine back and let the vampires take over the town that killed his lover.

Emily doesn’t plan to let that happen, however; the seance wasn’t so great an idea, shortly after things get creepy, and Emily possesses Bonnie, then takes off to the church ruins in the old cemetery. Elena calls Stefan and tells him what happened, but Damon overhears and takes off first. Stefan follows, Elena going after them as well, but Damon gets there first and is impaled on a tree limb by Emily, who has taken over Bonnie’s body, and is apparently, a very powerful witch. Stefan arrives and helps Damon down, while Emily reveals Damon’s plan to unleash the mass of vampires on the town. She destroys the crystal, and Damon is crushed; as soon as Emily’s finished, leaving Bonnie’s body, Damon attacks in a blind rage. Stefan saves her by giving Bonnie his blood.

Later, Damon is miserable and silent, but promises Stefan he’ll leave now. Stefan goes to Elena, who puts a confused and terrified Bonnie in the car. Elena tells Stefan she’s going to tell Bonnie the truth, so that she doesn’t have to be alone with his secret anymore. She also tells Stefan that she wants to be with him but Stefan tells her he’s decided to leave town, and disappear, in order to keep her and everyone else safe. Then he walks away, leaving Elena calling after him. Later that night, as the show winds down, while Bonnie and Elena comfort each other, Matt and Caroline share a soft moment when he tells her that he does understand about being alone. He tells her about being lonely, with Vickie leaving, and his MIA mother. Damon sits alone, crying, and Stefan cries in his room too, thrwing his diaries around angrily. At the Gilbert house, just as Jenna’s throwing away a photo of her and Logan, the doorbell rings; it’s Logan, and he wants to be invited inside.

Really intense episode. That guy Alvaric is a creepy SOB, –there’s no way he’s here to be a good guy, and I definitely don’t trust his sudden interest in the Gilbert family. Some good news though, is that things between Stefan and Damon seem to be mellowing out, even though Damon still believes that the love between him and Katherine was real. Stefan doesn’t think so, he believes he was glamoured; and it sure looked like it to me too. The whole story was blown wide open, and even though it’s a good thing the evil nasty Katherine wasn’t set free, it’s still really sad to see Damon lose Katherine forever, and his plan fall apart. Though it’s true that killing off the townspeople wouldn’t be very nice, it’s also true that some of them blindly hate vampires, despite that the only evil-ish one is Damon. At least, until Alvaric showed up.

It’s good to see Caroline and Matt together, since they were both obviously lonely and sad; with Matt getting over Vickie’s disappearance, and Caroline getting over Damon’s abuse. I don’t know what the hell is going to happen with Stefan and Damon, supposedly taking off and ditching the town, but I really hope that they stay, since Alvaric obviously has some pretty weird designs on the Gilberts. Good thing Jenna didn’t invite him in, but what the hell was the deal with Logan showing up? Has Alvaric glamoured her, or compelled her, to believe he’s Logan? Or is Logan a vampire? Or a zombie? He died, remember? He was killed by Damon, after shooting and almost staking Stefan, –or at least, killed the rest of the way by Vickie… The next episode needs to hurry up and get here!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 8

In this episode we’re introduced to Stefan’s oldest friend; the 350 year old Lexi, –she’s an absolute sweetheart, and the best part is, she’s older and stronger than Damon. So she can kick his ass any time. It’s Stefan’s birthday, and Lexi came to party with him. There’s maintenance to do after Vickie’s death; Matt, Jeremy, Stefan, and Elena all convince the sheriff that Vickie’s just left town. Matt and Elena are both giving Stefan the cold shoulder, but for different reasons; Matt doesn’t trust Stefan’s intentions with his sister in the last episode, and Elena is upset about all the drama following Stefan around.

Damon heads off to the sheriff’s to deliver a box of vervain; apparently, Stefan and Damon have been telling people that Zach is out-of-town too. Damon is devising a plan to get rid of the hunters and give them a vampire to keep them away from he and Stefan. Bonnie isn’t too thrilled with her crystal, the necklace her ancestor wore, but her Gram convinces her to always wear it. Bonnie heads over to Elena’s house to see what’s going on, and finds the majorly depressed Elena hiding in bed. To cheer her up, Bonnie demonstrates her new witch-y powers. Elena heads over to talk to Stefan, and instead, finds Lexi in her towel; awkward! Meanwhile, Damon is using his vampire Jedi-mind-trick on Caroline to get her to take the necklace from Bonnie, and throw a party that night at the ‘Grill.’

Lexi convinces Stefan to go with her, but he stops at Elena’s first to explain the presence of Lexi, and invite Elena to Caroline’s party. She gets the deal with Lexi, that they’re just friends, but decides she wants to stay home. At the party, Bonnie tries to take the crystal from Bonnie and it shocks her; when she reports what happened to Damon, he calls her shallow, and useless. While Caroline heads off to get wasted, Stefan stops Matt and tries to explain what was going on with him trying to give Vickie an ‘intervention.’ Matt seems to thaw a little, but he’s still angry and upset with Vickie for leaving. Outside, Damon is setting his plans in motion; when he spots a couple kissing nearby, he attacks the boy, and grabs the girl to give her a little brain melting. He goes back in the bar, and talks to Elena for a bit, –who seems to have magically appeared at the party despite not wanting to come, –and she asks if he added anything to Jeremy’s brain when he erased his memory. Damon evasively claims he only took away Jeremy’s suffering.

Outside, the police discover the body of the boy, and the girl sitting beside him. Inside, Lexi approaches Elena, and talks to her a little about love, and loving a vampire as a human. Lexi gets through a bit, Elena thaws toward Stefan, and joins him at the pool table. Lexi heads over to talk to Damon, letting Stefan and Elena have their alone time. Lexi and Damon chat about his diabolical plan, but suddenly, the sheriff enters with the girl, who points out Lexi as the boy’s killer. The sheriff strolls up, shoots up Lexi with vervain, and hauls her out of the bar. Stefan and Elena follow out the back. Lexi attempts to struggle, and the sheriff shoots her; just as Elena and Stefan are coming around the wall, they witness Damon stake Lexi. Though Elena tries to stop him, Stefan confronts Damon, fights him, and stakes him, –but only in the stomach. He tells him they’re even, since Damon saved his life, and he is now sparing Damon’s.

Caroline is carried away by Matt; she’s totally smashed, and he comforts her, and takes her home, then holds her while she sleeps. Elsewhere, Bonnie is having a nightmare, running through the forest, when her ancestor warns her of an “it” coming for her. Bonnie wakes up in the woods, still in her pajamas, out in the cemetery. Phew, what an episode! God, I wish Damon would just give it up, and the two brothers could just bond for god’s sake. And just when things were turning up with Stefan and Elena, Damon has to go and kill someone else, –and possibly brainwash her brother. Jeez; a girl just can’t get a break.

I’m also kind of worried about Caroline. Hopefully, Damon just stays away, because I think her and Matt would make a really sweet couple. She deserves someone to be nice to her, even if she is flawed; it’s a symptom of humanity. I also really liked the Lexi character; totally stupid that she’s already dead, but I guess she also would have been a third wheel in the series. So far it looks like Damon’s “diabolical master plan” is to completely isolate Stefan, and then maybe kill him. Too bad, –Damon is uber-hot, and I want him to stay, and be less of a douche. Just a little less!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1 Episode 7

This episode moves pretty fast; they pack a hell of a lot of stuff into forty minutes of action. After Vickie attacks Ty in his car, Damon and Stefan reign her in; mostly Stefan, of course. He keeps her in the house and tries to get her accustomed to a non-human diet, and make her understand why feeding on humans is bad news, while Damon constantly antagonizes the situation. Elena arrives later to learn what she can about Vickie’s condition. In a moment alone with Vickie, Elena learns that Vickie’s no one to mess with. After warning Vickie to stay away from Jeremy, Elena is thrust against a wall and half strangled, while Vickie makes her point.

We finally learn what Bonnie’s been up to; she was staying the weekend with her grandma, who’s been teaching her all about their family history and witchcraft. Apparently, they come from a long line of witches who managed to escape the massacre in Salem, in 1692. Later on, Caroline gives Bonnie her costume at school, –a witch’s outfit, of course, and also, the necklace she got from Damon, expressing interest in finally leaving Damon behind. Mayor Lockwood and his wife discuss the missing compass, and Logan’s death, while Damon eavesdrops. At the Salvatore house, Damon decides to teach Vickie some of the tricks of the trade, despite Stefan’s misgivings, and of course, Vickie escapes.

While Vickie and Jeremy organize a secret meeting at the school’s haunted Halloween event, Damon is learning all kinds of interesting things about the town’s vampire hunters. Mayor Lockwood’s wife is flush on martinis, and spills a lot of details. She tells him that Zach was supplying a mysterious town ‘Council’ with vervain. At the high school, everyone shows up for a big scary Halloween party, and with Vickie losing her mind to her hunger, there might be more scares than they planned. Matt confronts Stefan and Elena about the weird stuff going on with his sister, Vickie. Vickie takes off, but not before she tells Matt that Stefan is bothering her, sparking a quick scuffle while she sneaks off to meet Matt.

Vickie and Jeremy leave to make out, while outside, Damon finds out what happened to his yellow crystal, and tries to take it from Bonnie. The necklace burns his hand when he touches it; Bonnie runs home to her grandmother’s and explains what happened. Her grandmother reveals that the necklace belonged to one of the most powerful witches in their family, Emily Bennet. In the high school’s parking lot, things heat up between Vickie and Jeremy, and before too long, she’s ready to eat. Elena and Stefan try to hold her off, but Vickie evades capture, and attacks Elena, attempting to feed on her. Stefan stakes her with a broken board, and Vickie turns gross, and really… just, ew, immediately. Stefan takes Jeremy away, and Elena waits for Damon to come and take care of the body.

Damon sends away an angry Elena, who tempted him with her bleeding injuries. At the Gilbert home, Elena comforts Jeremy, and then asks Stefan to erase his memory. Stefan admits that because of his lifestyle, his powers aren’t strong enough to completely erase Jeremy’s memory, –Damon arrives and offers to do it. Elena tells Damon what she wants Jeremy to know, and while Damon is upstairs, Elena admits to Stefan that she still has feelings for him. Aww! Perhaps in the next episode, things between them might get a little less angry and weird? And Damon has also done his one token good deed for the episode.

This episode went by fast; too fast! We had to wait two whole weeks for this episode, the least they could do was make it a little longer! But no, still only forty minutes of vampire fun. It’s great to see Bonnie again, but wow, the grandmother actress needs some serious work, –I notice though, that when new characters are introduced mid-show, like in True Blood, it takes them a little while to be more comfortable in their roles. If she has any skill at all, she’ll be more natural in a couple more episodes. Early on in the episode, it looked like Elena and Matt might hook back up, but thank god, no… I wasn’t ready to see them get back together, and for Elena to just blow off Stefan for the sake of normality.

Notice, for some reason, Aunt Jenna didn’t appear in this episode, –these producers need to add that extra ten minutes, or learn how to put these characters in the show and condense it a bit more. Skipping the follow-up on the supporting actors is kind of a dick move. In an interesting way, Elena seems to be bringing the Salvatore brothers closer together, but it might just be temporary, –they do seem to be on better terms than they were in the first few episodes. And we also get the extra added bonus of more romance in the future, –Elena admits that even though they’ve been through hell, she doesn’t want to lose her feelings for Stefan. Who knows, maybe some romance will crop up between Bonnie and Damon? Or maybe things between Damon, Stefan, and Elena will just get more convoluted and angry. Le sigh. Drama.

Vampire Diaries, Season 1 Episode 6

In this episode, Elena finds out Stefan and Damon’s dirty secret; they’re vampires, and she learns later, after she initially runs from Stefan, through Stefan’s patient explaining, the whole story; the nature of the beast, so to speak. There are a few flashback scenes, and we find out more about Katherine; in Mystic Falls, 1864, Damon and Stefan were close, until Katherine arrived on the scene. We find out later in the show, that it was Katherine Pierce who was the vampire. Her plan was to turn Damon and Stefan, and keep them with her as one big happy family, before her violent death.

Apparently, Vickie is one hell of a survivor; she lived through Damon’s attack, so he decides to keep her, so to speak, after he kills her friends and disposes of their bodies, and demands via cell phone that Stefan returns his ring. It’s painfully obvious that Stefan cares for Elena; he guards her house the whole night after his secret is revealed. The next day, he explains vampires, Damon’s deal with Caroline, and convinces her to give him a day to explain things fully. While Damon gives Vickie his blood to perk her up, Damon’s mess is discovered by Logan and the sheriff, who know it was a vampire attack.

Stefan shows Elena the ruins of his family home, tells of how things were with him, Damon, and Katherine. At the Salvatore home, Damon explains exactly what happened to Vickie, who seems totally unperturbed, and asks for more of his blood. They feed mutually off one another, while at the site of their original home, Stefan tells Elena of Katherine’s manipulating he and Damon against each other. Stefan reveals that if he doesn’t return Damon’s ring, he’ll retaliate by harming Elena; meanwhile, Elena’s hysterics meter is gradually filling up. Mayor Lockwood, in the company of Logan Fell and the sheriff, assembles something like a compass that will lead them to the vampires.

Shortly after the hottest moment in the entire show so far, Vickie cries on Damon’s shoulder, about how horrible her life is; to alleviate the situation, Damon snaps her neck. Soon after, she wakes up. Vickie is now among the undead! At least, she will be when she feeds; Damon explains, she blows him off as high and takes off. He suggests she go by her boyfriend’s house, no doubt in order to stir some shit. At the Gilbert home, Matt and Jeremy watch Vickie as she transforms, thinking she’s on drugs. Elena and Stefan arrive, and he tells them how to help her, and explains to Elena what Damon did, and that if Vickie doesn’t feed, she’ll die. Vickie runs away after almost feeding on Jeremy, but Matt and Stefan follow her.

The town’s vampire hunters are also tracking vampires that night, and Logan heads to the old cemetery just as Damon shows up at Elena’s door. He wants Stefan, and his ring, no doubt for a good long fight over locking him in the basement. Damon indicates in his short talk with Elena that maybe there’s more to his story. Stefan finds Vickie in the cemetery, and comforts her, explains her situation, but before Stefan can take her home, Logan shoots him with a wooden bullet. Before Logan can stake Stefan, Damon attacks him and saves his brother, digging the bullet out of Stefan. They now know that the town is hunting them. Vickie feeds from Logan while he’s down, then runs away. Damon now has his ring, and the mysterious vampire hunting compass; the sheriff and a deputy, –apparently more people are vampire hunters than we thought! –find Logan’s body and note the missing watch. After Stefan tells Elena about Vickie, she sadly gives him her verdict: she’ll keep his secret but she can’t be with him.

Oh, another really sad episode. In some ways, there were a lot of really interesting and somewhat relieving scenes here too though. We didn’t see anything on Caroline, or Bonnie; this show mostly revolved around Vickie, Damon, Stefan, Katherine, Elena, and a dash of Matt and jeremy for seasoning. Oh and we can’t forget the fearless vampire hunters, who seem to be multiplying rapidly. Just how many people in Mystic Falls are into hunting vampires as a hobby? So far we have the mayor, a news anchor, the sheriff, one deputy, and possibly the mayor’s wife. I’m dying to know a little more about what’s going on with this mysterious group of vampire hunters, as well as where the hell Bonnie and Caroline are.

More interesting yet, is Damon’s foggy history with Katherine; I want to know more about his side of the story, and what happened to make him so bitter. Also, it seems that maybe things might be a little more complicated than we thought with he and Stefan; he did save his brother’s life. Was it because maybe, Damon still loves his brother, or does he just want to keep Stefan alive so he can continue to torment him? I know one thing; with Vickie’s crazy emotional issues, and volatile personality, she’s going to make a very nteresting vampire. Stefan’s going to have to keep her on a short leash. And oh, if you haven’t heard yet, horror of horrors, they’re going to make us wait a whole extra week for the next show!
