The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 14

Well, the little subplot between Matt and Caroline is moving along at a snail’s pace, but besides that, things are definitely picking up. As predicted, Elena was snatched, along with Bonnie, in order to make a trade: the grimoire for Elena. The difference is, that despite all manner of begging from Stefan, Damon isn’t going for it. While Elena and Bonnie hang out in a hotel room with Anna and her douchebag boyfriend, Damon tries to get Bonnie’s grandmother to open the door to Katherine’s tomb. No cigar. Jeremy Gilbert, meanwhile, is getting more and more pitiful as time goes on.

Despite eventually getting convinced to going out to ‘Duke’s party’, he chooses to bring Anna as his date. Guess where the big party is? Right in the old cemetery, next to the church ruins, where underneath, about two dozen hungry vampires are about to pour forth, should the vampires involved have their way. Stefan went to Gram’s house and figured out where Elena and Bonnie were via a “simple locator spell”, then busts them out of the hotel room where Anna and her undead jock were holding them hostage. After cutting through all the drama, Bonnie and her grandmother agree to open the tomb so that Damon can get Katherine and leave.

The only thing is, Damon isn’t in the mood to work together with everybody, so Elena collects herself, and goes to convince Damon that they won’t betray him again. Elena doesn’t apologize exactly, but she does persuade Damon that she will help him get Katherine out of the tomb. Damon puts his trust in her once again, and they head out to the tomb to meet Bonnie, her grandmother, Stefan, and his big flamethrower. Over at the big cemetery bash, Jeremy and Anna head off into the woods, where within thirty seconds, they kiss, she says she’s leaving, and her other boyfriend smashes him on the head with a crowbar.

Anna packs up Jeremy to take him off to the tomb, but she ends up having to deal with Stefan. The door to the tomb is open, and Damon hauls Elena in with him, for leverage against Bonnie and her grandmother just closing the door again. Everybody’s in the tomb; Anna, Damon, Elena, –Anna forces Elena to give blood to her mother, which of course, brings some screams from Elena, which brings Stefan a’runnin’ in. Problem with that is, there’s a seal still on the tomb, even if the door is open. The seal keeps the vampires from leaving, so Damon, Stefan, Anna, and her mother, are trapped.

But Elena can leave. Bonnie convinces her grandmother to break the seal long enough for everyone to get out, but Damon is freaking out, because Katherine isn’t in the tomb. Anna and her mother disappear into the night, promising to leave Jeremy alone, and giving directions to where he is. Outside, the witches are having some serious issues, –the spell is taking a lot out of both Bonnie, and her grandmother. They manage to keep the spell going strong, while Elena goes in and convinces Damon to leave the tomb, even though Katherine isn’t in there.

Damon, Elena, and Stefan make it outside, and there’s a really sweet moment where a heartbroken Damon gets a hug from Elena. Elena takes care of Jeremy, who says he thought he passed out, before she takes off to Bonnie’s. Apparently though, his recent encounter with Anna has only fueled his fascination with vampires. Damon is waiting for Anna and her mother, angry enough to rip them both to pieces; he accuses Anna of knowing that Katherine wasn’t there. Her mother says that Katherine escaped because she promised the guard she’d turn him, and Anna continues that Katherine was last seen in Chicago, in the 80’s.

She apologizes, telling him that Katherine knew all along where Damon was, that she just didn’t care enough to find him. Damon leaves, and is joined by Stefan at their home, in front of the fire. Presumably, there’s a modicum of male bonding. Elena, Bonnie and her grandmother spend the night together, but the spell weakened her grandmother, and killed her. Altogether, a very sad episode; not only does Jeremy lose yet another girl, but he also seems to be getting a little too obsessed with the whole vampires thing. This episode had nothing at all to do with Alaric Saltzman, so the next episode, we ought to be seeing more of him.

The whole Katherine thing, whoa, I didn’t see that coming at all. Now I’m almost positive, there’s going to be a big Katherine/Damon/Stefan/Elena bash at some point in the future. I also think that after Bonnie’s grandmother dying because of the strain of performing a spell to save Damon and Stefan, that Bonnie is going to be a little less sympathetic with the vampire plight in the future. And what’s the deal with the vampire popping out of the tomb at the end? Damon was all upset, he didn’t know that bursting his little blood bag would wake up an angry, Civil War-era vampire. But he’s up, and looks like he’s feeling frisky.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 9

This is a really busy episode; questions are answered, and a new character is introduced. First of all, it’s becoming more clear that Emily is haunting Bonnie, and she wants something. There’s a little bit of weirdness between Matt and Caroline that only gets worse when Caroline confronts Matt after school, wanting to know what’s going on between them now; Matt kind of shuts her down, and takes off. Bonnie and Elena discuss Emily, and Elena is determined to get Caroline and Bonnie talking again. Meanwhile, Alaric Saltzman is introduced: this guy is definitely a vampire, –has a ring like Stefan and Damon. And for some reason, he seems to want to get really close to the Gilbert family. First he offers Jeremy extra credit, so that he can make up his grade, then later, starts getting all cuddly with the freshly single Aunt Jenna.

Stefan talks with Elena, and tells her he plans to “back off from school”, but she sees that he really wants to stay away from her. Damon approaches Bonnie again about the crystal, and warns her about Emily’s presence. Bonnie throws the necklace in a field on the way to Elena’s house, after telling Elena about Damon bothering her. Elena asks Stefan about the necklace, to find out from Damon what the deal is, and later that night, after Caroline apologizes and the girls work things out, the necklace appears again in Bonnie’s bag. Stefan warms up more to Damon, who has been trying to form a truce, in order to find out more about the necklace. Damon knows Stefan wants something, but they go on bonding a bit more.

After a brief fight over the re-appearance of the necklace, the girls work things out again, and Bonnie explains to Caroline that she’s a witch. They decide to have a seance to see what Emily wants. Meanwhile, after bringing up the sore subject of Katherine’s false love with Damon, Stefan asks about the necklace. They argue and things almost get nasty, but then Damon reveals his master plan. He plans to bring Katherine back. The necklace belonged to Katherine, who gave it to Emily, –Bonnie’s ancestor, and Katherine’s handmaid, who used the necklace to seal Katherine and twenty-seven other vampires in a tomb beneath the church, while it burned down. Stefan believed that Katherine died in the church, but she was only sealed below. Damon wants to bring Katherine back and let the vampires take over the town that killed his lover.

Emily doesn’t plan to let that happen, however; the seance wasn’t so great an idea, shortly after things get creepy, and Emily possesses Bonnie, then takes off to the church ruins in the old cemetery. Elena calls Stefan and tells him what happened, but Damon overhears and takes off first. Stefan follows, Elena going after them as well, but Damon gets there first and is impaled on a tree limb by Emily, who has taken over Bonnie’s body, and is apparently, a very powerful witch. Stefan arrives and helps Damon down, while Emily reveals Damon’s plan to unleash the mass of vampires on the town. She destroys the crystal, and Damon is crushed; as soon as Emily’s finished, leaving Bonnie’s body, Damon attacks in a blind rage. Stefan saves her by giving Bonnie his blood.

Later, Damon is miserable and silent, but promises Stefan he’ll leave now. Stefan goes to Elena, who puts a confused and terrified Bonnie in the car. Elena tells Stefan she’s going to tell Bonnie the truth, so that she doesn’t have to be alone with his secret anymore. She also tells Stefan that she wants to be with him but Stefan tells her he’s decided to leave town, and disappear, in order to keep her and everyone else safe. Then he walks away, leaving Elena calling after him. Later that night, as the show winds down, while Bonnie and Elena comfort each other, Matt and Caroline share a soft moment when he tells her that he does understand about being alone. He tells her about being lonely, with Vickie leaving, and his MIA mother. Damon sits alone, crying, and Stefan cries in his room too, thrwing his diaries around angrily. At the Gilbert house, just as Jenna’s throwing away a photo of her and Logan, the doorbell rings; it’s Logan, and he wants to be invited inside.

Really intense episode. That guy Alvaric is a creepy SOB, –there’s no way he’s here to be a good guy, and I definitely don’t trust his sudden interest in the Gilbert family. Some good news though, is that things between Stefan and Damon seem to be mellowing out, even though Damon still believes that the love between him and Katherine was real. Stefan doesn’t think so, he believes he was glamoured; and it sure looked like it to me too. The whole story was blown wide open, and even though it’s a good thing the evil nasty Katherine wasn’t set free, it’s still really sad to see Damon lose Katherine forever, and his plan fall apart. Though it’s true that killing off the townspeople wouldn’t be very nice, it’s also true that some of them blindly hate vampires, despite that the only evil-ish one is Damon. At least, until Alvaric showed up.

It’s good to see Caroline and Matt together, since they were both obviously lonely and sad; with Matt getting over Vickie’s disappearance, and Caroline getting over Damon’s abuse. I don’t know what the hell is going to happen with Stefan and Damon, supposedly taking off and ditching the town, but I really hope that they stay, since Alvaric obviously has some pretty weird designs on the Gilberts. Good thing Jenna didn’t invite him in, but what the hell was the deal with Logan showing up? Has Alvaric glamoured her, or compelled her, to believe he’s Logan? Or is Logan a vampire? Or a zombie? He died, remember? He was killed by Damon, after shooting and almost staking Stefan, –or at least, killed the rest of the way by Vickie… The next episode needs to hurry up and get here!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 8

In this episode we’re introduced to Stefan’s oldest friend; the 350 year old Lexi, –she’s an absolute sweetheart, and the best part is, she’s older and stronger than Damon. So she can kick his ass any time. It’s Stefan’s birthday, and Lexi came to party with him. There’s maintenance to do after Vickie’s death; Matt, Jeremy, Stefan, and Elena all convince the sheriff that Vickie’s just left town. Matt and Elena are both giving Stefan the cold shoulder, but for different reasons; Matt doesn’t trust Stefan’s intentions with his sister in the last episode, and Elena is upset about all the drama following Stefan around.

Damon heads off to the sheriff’s to deliver a box of vervain; apparently, Stefan and Damon have been telling people that Zach is out-of-town too. Damon is devising a plan to get rid of the hunters and give them a vampire to keep them away from he and Stefan. Bonnie isn’t too thrilled with her crystal, the necklace her ancestor wore, but her Gram convinces her to always wear it. Bonnie heads over to Elena’s house to see what’s going on, and finds the majorly depressed Elena hiding in bed. To cheer her up, Bonnie demonstrates her new witch-y powers. Elena heads over to talk to Stefan, and instead, finds Lexi in her towel; awkward! Meanwhile, Damon is using his vampire Jedi-mind-trick on Caroline to get her to take the necklace from Bonnie, and throw a party that night at the ‘Grill.’

Lexi convinces Stefan to go with her, but he stops at Elena’s first to explain the presence of Lexi, and invite Elena to Caroline’s party. She gets the deal with Lexi, that they’re just friends, but decides she wants to stay home. At the party, Bonnie tries to take the crystal from Bonnie and it shocks her; when she reports what happened to Damon, he calls her shallow, and useless. While Caroline heads off to get wasted, Stefan stops Matt and tries to explain what was going on with him trying to give Vickie an ‘intervention.’ Matt seems to thaw a little, but he’s still angry and upset with Vickie for leaving. Outside, Damon is setting his plans in motion; when he spots a couple kissing nearby, he attacks the boy, and grabs the girl to give her a little brain melting. He goes back in the bar, and talks to Elena for a bit, –who seems to have magically appeared at the party despite not wanting to come, –and she asks if he added anything to Jeremy’s brain when he erased his memory. Damon evasively claims he only took away Jeremy’s suffering.

Outside, the police discover the body of the boy, and the girl sitting beside him. Inside, Lexi approaches Elena, and talks to her a little about love, and loving a vampire as a human. Lexi gets through a bit, Elena thaws toward Stefan, and joins him at the pool table. Lexi heads over to talk to Damon, letting Stefan and Elena have their alone time. Lexi and Damon chat about his diabolical plan, but suddenly, the sheriff enters with the girl, who points out Lexi as the boy’s killer. The sheriff strolls up, shoots up Lexi with vervain, and hauls her out of the bar. Stefan and Elena follow out the back. Lexi attempts to struggle, and the sheriff shoots her; just as Elena and Stefan are coming around the wall, they witness Damon stake Lexi. Though Elena tries to stop him, Stefan confronts Damon, fights him, and stakes him, –but only in the stomach. He tells him they’re even, since Damon saved his life, and he is now sparing Damon’s.

Caroline is carried away by Matt; she’s totally smashed, and he comforts her, and takes her home, then holds her while she sleeps. Elsewhere, Bonnie is having a nightmare, running through the forest, when her ancestor warns her of an “it” coming for her. Bonnie wakes up in the woods, still in her pajamas, out in the cemetery. Phew, what an episode! God, I wish Damon would just give it up, and the two brothers could just bond for god’s sake. And just when things were turning up with Stefan and Elena, Damon has to go and kill someone else, –and possibly brainwash her brother. Jeez; a girl just can’t get a break.

I’m also kind of worried about Caroline. Hopefully, Damon just stays away, because I think her and Matt would make a really sweet couple. She deserves someone to be nice to her, even if she is flawed; it’s a symptom of humanity. I also really liked the Lexi character; totally stupid that she’s already dead, but I guess she also would have been a third wheel in the series. So far it looks like Damon’s “diabolical master plan” is to completely isolate Stefan, and then maybe kill him. Too bad, –Damon is uber-hot, and I want him to stay, and be less of a douche. Just a little less!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1 Episode 7

This episode moves pretty fast; they pack a hell of a lot of stuff into forty minutes of action. After Vickie attacks Ty in his car, Damon and Stefan reign her in; mostly Stefan, of course. He keeps her in the house and tries to get her accustomed to a non-human diet, and make her understand why feeding on humans is bad news, while Damon constantly antagonizes the situation. Elena arrives later to learn what she can about Vickie’s condition. In a moment alone with Vickie, Elena learns that Vickie’s no one to mess with. After warning Vickie to stay away from Jeremy, Elena is thrust against a wall and half strangled, while Vickie makes her point.

We finally learn what Bonnie’s been up to; she was staying the weekend with her grandma, who’s been teaching her all about their family history and witchcraft. Apparently, they come from a long line of witches who managed to escape the massacre in Salem, in 1692. Later on, Caroline gives Bonnie her costume at school, –a witch’s outfit, of course, and also, the necklace she got from Damon, expressing interest in finally leaving Damon behind. Mayor Lockwood and his wife discuss the missing compass, and Logan’s death, while Damon eavesdrops. At the Salvatore house, Damon decides to teach Vickie some of the tricks of the trade, despite Stefan’s misgivings, and of course, Vickie escapes.

While Vickie and Jeremy organize a secret meeting at the school’s haunted Halloween event, Damon is learning all kinds of interesting things about the town’s vampire hunters. Mayor Lockwood’s wife is flush on martinis, and spills a lot of details. She tells him that Zach was supplying a mysterious town ‘Council’ with vervain. At the high school, everyone shows up for a big scary Halloween party, and with Vickie losing her mind to her hunger, there might be more scares than they planned. Matt confronts Stefan and Elena about the weird stuff going on with his sister, Vickie. Vickie takes off, but not before she tells Matt that Stefan is bothering her, sparking a quick scuffle while she sneaks off to meet Matt.

Vickie and Jeremy leave to make out, while outside, Damon finds out what happened to his yellow crystal, and tries to take it from Bonnie. The necklace burns his hand when he touches it; Bonnie runs home to her grandmother’s and explains what happened. Her grandmother reveals that the necklace belonged to one of the most powerful witches in their family, Emily Bennet. In the high school’s parking lot, things heat up between Vickie and Jeremy, and before too long, she’s ready to eat. Elena and Stefan try to hold her off, but Vickie evades capture, and attacks Elena, attempting to feed on her. Stefan stakes her with a broken board, and Vickie turns gross, and really… just, ew, immediately. Stefan takes Jeremy away, and Elena waits for Damon to come and take care of the body.

Damon sends away an angry Elena, who tempted him with her bleeding injuries. At the Gilbert home, Elena comforts Jeremy, and then asks Stefan to erase his memory. Stefan admits that because of his lifestyle, his powers aren’t strong enough to completely erase Jeremy’s memory, –Damon arrives and offers to do it. Elena tells Damon what she wants Jeremy to know, and while Damon is upstairs, Elena admits to Stefan that she still has feelings for him. Aww! Perhaps in the next episode, things between them might get a little less angry and weird? And Damon has also done his one token good deed for the episode.

This episode went by fast; too fast! We had to wait two whole weeks for this episode, the least they could do was make it a little longer! But no, still only forty minutes of vampire fun. It’s great to see Bonnie again, but wow, the grandmother actress needs some serious work, –I notice though, that when new characters are introduced mid-show, like in True Blood, it takes them a little while to be more comfortable in their roles. If she has any skill at all, she’ll be more natural in a couple more episodes. Early on in the episode, it looked like Elena and Matt might hook back up, but thank god, no… I wasn’t ready to see them get back together, and for Elena to just blow off Stefan for the sake of normality.

Notice, for some reason, Aunt Jenna didn’t appear in this episode, –these producers need to add that extra ten minutes, or learn how to put these characters in the show and condense it a bit more. Skipping the follow-up on the supporting actors is kind of a dick move. In an interesting way, Elena seems to be bringing the Salvatore brothers closer together, but it might just be temporary, –they do seem to be on better terms than they were in the first few episodes. And we also get the extra added bonus of more romance in the future, –Elena admits that even though they’ve been through hell, she doesn’t want to lose her feelings for Stefan. Who knows, maybe some romance will crop up between Bonnie and Damon? Or maybe things between Damon, Stefan, and Elena will just get more convoluted and angry. Le sigh. Drama.

Vampire Diaries, Season 1 Episode 6

In this episode, Elena finds out Stefan and Damon’s dirty secret; they’re vampires, and she learns later, after she initially runs from Stefan, through Stefan’s patient explaining, the whole story; the nature of the beast, so to speak. There are a few flashback scenes, and we find out more about Katherine; in Mystic Falls, 1864, Damon and Stefan were close, until Katherine arrived on the scene. We find out later in the show, that it was Katherine Pierce who was the vampire. Her plan was to turn Damon and Stefan, and keep them with her as one big happy family, before her violent death.

Apparently, Vickie is one hell of a survivor; she lived through Damon’s attack, so he decides to keep her, so to speak, after he kills her friends and disposes of their bodies, and demands via cell phone that Stefan returns his ring. It’s painfully obvious that Stefan cares for Elena; he guards her house the whole night after his secret is revealed. The next day, he explains vampires, Damon’s deal with Caroline, and convinces her to give him a day to explain things fully. While Damon gives Vickie his blood to perk her up, Damon’s mess is discovered by Logan and the sheriff, who know it was a vampire attack.

Stefan shows Elena the ruins of his family home, tells of how things were with him, Damon, and Katherine. At the Salvatore home, Damon explains exactly what happened to Vickie, who seems totally unperturbed, and asks for more of his blood. They feed mutually off one another, while at the site of their original home, Stefan tells Elena of Katherine’s manipulating he and Damon against each other. Stefan reveals that if he doesn’t return Damon’s ring, he’ll retaliate by harming Elena; meanwhile, Elena’s hysterics meter is gradually filling up. Mayor Lockwood, in the company of Logan Fell and the sheriff, assembles something like a compass that will lead them to the vampires.

Shortly after the hottest moment in the entire show so far, Vickie cries on Damon’s shoulder, about how horrible her life is; to alleviate the situation, Damon snaps her neck. Soon after, she wakes up. Vickie is now among the undead! At least, she will be when she feeds; Damon explains, she blows him off as high and takes off. He suggests she go by her boyfriend’s house, no doubt in order to stir some shit. At the Gilbert home, Matt and Jeremy watch Vickie as she transforms, thinking she’s on drugs. Elena and Stefan arrive, and he tells them how to help her, and explains to Elena what Damon did, and that if Vickie doesn’t feed, she’ll die. Vickie runs away after almost feeding on Jeremy, but Matt and Stefan follow her.

The town’s vampire hunters are also tracking vampires that night, and Logan heads to the old cemetery just as Damon shows up at Elena’s door. He wants Stefan, and his ring, no doubt for a good long fight over locking him in the basement. Damon indicates in his short talk with Elena that maybe there’s more to his story. Stefan finds Vickie in the cemetery, and comforts her, explains her situation, but before Stefan can take her home, Logan shoots him with a wooden bullet. Before Logan can stake Stefan, Damon attacks him and saves his brother, digging the bullet out of Stefan. They now know that the town is hunting them. Vickie feeds from Logan while he’s down, then runs away. Damon now has his ring, and the mysterious vampire hunting compass; the sheriff and a deputy, –apparently more people are vampire hunters than we thought! –find Logan’s body and note the missing watch. After Stefan tells Elena about Vickie, she sadly gives him her verdict: she’ll keep his secret but she can’t be with him.

Oh, another really sad episode. In some ways, there were a lot of really interesting and somewhat relieving scenes here too though. We didn’t see anything on Caroline, or Bonnie; this show mostly revolved around Vickie, Damon, Stefan, Katherine, Elena, and a dash of Matt and jeremy for seasoning. Oh and we can’t forget the fearless vampire hunters, who seem to be multiplying rapidly. Just how many people in Mystic Falls are into hunting vampires as a hobby? So far we have the mayor, a news anchor, the sheriff, one deputy, and possibly the mayor’s wife. I’m dying to know a little more about what’s going on with this mysterious group of vampire hunters, as well as where the hell Bonnie and Caroline are.

More interesting yet, is Damon’s foggy history with Katherine; I want to know more about his side of the story, and what happened to make him so bitter. Also, it seems that maybe things might be a little more complicated than we thought with he and Stefan; he did save his brother’s life. Was it because maybe, Damon still loves his brother, or does he just want to keep Stefan alive so he can continue to torment him? I know one thing; with Vickie’s crazy emotional issues, and volatile personality, she’s going to make a very nteresting vampire. Stefan’s going to have to keep her on a short leash. And oh, if you haven’t heard yet, horror of horrors, they’re going to make us wait a whole extra week for the next show!

Vampire Diaries, Season 1 Episode 5

After Stefan’s cunning capture of Damon, he locks him down in the basement; the plan is to allow Damon to mummify, as a living corpse, then move him to the family tomb, and re-evaluate Damon in fifty years. Meanwhile, things between Stefan and Elena are getting strained; after four days of absence dealing with Damon, Stefan finally returns to school, and promises to explain himself at the Grill later. He doesn’t show until Elena’s ready to leave, and a strange old man claims that he knew Stefan, years ago; he’s shocked that Stefan hasn’t aged. When Stefan denies Elena an explanation, she leaves, tired of the mystery. At the Salvatore home, Zach tries telling Damon goodbye, and Damon almost kills him, –Stefan saves Zach, probably the reason he was late to his meeting with Elena.

In desperation, Damon turns to Caroline, and calls her to him. That night, she manages to ignore it. The same night, Jeremy helps Stefan arrange a romantic dinner for two for he and Elena, in which Stefan manages to share a little more of himself with her. Jeremy is going through his own romantic problems with Vickie, who loves getting high a little too much. The next day at a fundraiser carwash, Caroline follows Damon’s calls. After Caroline leaves, Elena speaks again to the old man who recognized Stefan. She follows up on his story of the Salvatore brothers and their murdered uncle by getting a favor from Logan Fell. Logan is the news anchor who dates Aunt Jenna, but is also part of a clandestine group of vampire hunters that includes the sheriff, and the mayor.

At the station, Elena manages to find an archive video of the news feature covering the death of Stefan’s uncle in June of 1953. Sure enough, in the old black and white video, Stefan lurks in the doorway, in shadows, while the dead body of his uncle is wheeled past on a gurney. Caroline has freed Damon at the Salvatore house, but Zach urges her to run, holding off Damon just long enough, until Damon can escape. Damon kills Zach and chases Caroline, but she manages to escape. At the carwash, Bonnie falls into a trance and sets a nearby car ablaze; the second demonstration of her power that day. Stefan shakes her from the trance, the fire is extinguished instantly, and he agrees to tell no one that she did it. Later that night, Bonnie goes to her grandmother’s house, and doesn’t appear again, –not even in the next episode.

Jeremy leaves Vickie in the cemetery to do drugs with her loser friends, not able to reconcile himself to her self-destructive personality. That night, Caroline sleeps sadly under the sign of a pentagram from the moonlight shining through the mysterious yellow crystal. Logan steals the pocketwatch while at the Gilbert house visiting Jenna, while Stefan discovers Zach, and mourns the death of his uncle. In her room, Elena puts all the pieces together and realizes what Stefan is. And in the cemetery, Damon attacks Vickie and it looks like this time, she might not survive.

This has been a really depressing episode; for starters, Matt is barely in it, and even though he hardly qualifies as a supporting actor it seems like he deserves to have a little bit more of a role. What was at first a love triangle is now a love… square? Elena is pretty popular; Damon would kill to have her, Stefan would kill to protect her, and Matt is just trying to be a supportive friend. The whole vampire thing is definitely going to put a big dent in what was already a strained relationship, with obvious trust issues. It seems like these human girls who manage to fall in love with vampires, are always incredibly unsupportive, and almost always refuse to understand the plight of their taciturn undead lovers. If you date a vampire, try to be a more understanding girlfriend!

So aside from watching Stefan strive to hold together his and Elena’s fraying relationship, we’re also treated to Zach’s death. How do they plan to explain that to the authorities? And we didn’t really have time to develop many feelings for Zach, but really, how is the Salvatore family managing to stay alive anyway? Just when we’re starting to feel a little sympathetic towards Damon, he goes and kills a bunch of people. Jeez. And what’s with the necklace? Is the pentagram thing good or bad, and what does it do? I kind of hope it protects Caroline, because she’s such a sad little thing. We’re all hoping to find out more in the next episode, especially if we get to know more about the rag-tag group of vampire hunters, the yellow crystal, and whether Vickie survives. Sadly, I’ll warn you now, that Bonnie remains absent from the next episode.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 4

There’s the episode recap; anything you missed, no worries, you’ll catch up with the last episode here. Elena wakes up in the night, finding herself alone in the house, –’til she sees a shadow on the wall. In the living room, the lights won’t work, –but the TV does, and the news shows the latest victim of the animal attacks; herself. Suddenly, Damon is everywhere, and chasing her, –when he finally catches her and sinks his teeth in, Stefan snaps awake. This time, it’s Stefan’s nightmare! He wakes up to find Damon mocking him for his nightmare, Damon tells him the “deadly beast” was captured, that it was a mountain lion, –apparently, Damon is ‘covering his tracks.’

Damon rattles on more, needling Stefan about his plans to seduce Elena. Stefan confesses in his diary that he doesn’t know how he’ll stop Damon, but that he will, somehow. At Elena’s house, Jenna is cussing at the TV, –she explains to Elena that the news anchor, Logan Fell, was the reason she left town. Elena is polishing heirlooms from her mother’s safety deposit box, and Jeremy states an interest in their value. Not too long after, Stefan shows up at the door. He and Elena instantly fall into a make out session, that ends with the two on her bed, and Stefan losing control of his hunger.

They agree to chill out a bit, and Stefan and Elena also agree to go to the Founder’s Party; the party that the original Mystic Falls founders attended for the establishment of the small town. Damon manipulates Caroline into taking him to the Party, as well; and also manipulates her into wearing a blue dress, not the “childish” yellow one. Hilarious moment, –Damon is making fun of Edward, from Twilight, being whipped, by Bella. Though apparently, he can speak freely about what vampires are like in the “real world,” because Caroline already knows his dirty secret. They have a soft, cute moment, when Caroline suddenly asks if Damon is going to kill her. He says yes, though he wants her to do something for him first.

Instead of doing the obvious, and saying “Blow me,” Caroline agrees to do “anything” for him, –which means snooping. At the Grill, Ty has lunch with his parents, and ignores Vickie, the server. Also at the Grill, Bonnie tells Elena she doesn’t really want to go to the Party without a date, –but she goes anyway. When Tyler tries to get all cozy with Vickie, once his parents are gone, she does her best to blow him off. But when he agrees to take her to the Party, she instantly thaws. Jeremy, watching the whole incident in disgust, tells her it’s sad to see her knowingly make the wrong choice.

Finally, Zach confronts Damon about why he’s back in Mystic Falls, but Damon doesn’t feel the need to tell Zach anything; instead, he strangles him. Stefan interrupts, possibly saving Zach’s life, and when Damon disappears, they plan to poison him with vervain; a plant that Damon made sure didn’t grow in the area for over a hundred years. Zach reveals a hidden stash of vervain, growing in the basement, –a deadly secret, for relatives of vampires. Especially psychotic vampires, like Damon. They agree that once Damon is weakened by the vervain, they can ’stop’ him. So, are they planning to kill him?!

Ty goes over to Elena’s house, to pick up Elena’s family heirlooms, and she practically has to pry Jeremy and Tyler off each other. When Elena leaves, Jeremy hangs in the door for a moment, and Ty asks if it would make any difference if he told him, that he actually liked Vickie. Jeremy isn’t impressed, and doesn’t believe him. While digging through nail polish, getting ready for the Founders’ Party, Bonnie confides in Elena something that Caroline told her about Katherine. The story according to Damon is, that Katherine chose Damon, and by being a manipulative liar, Stefan broke them up. Elena doesn’t believe it, but Bonnie urges her to not be so trusting.

While Damon and Stefan are getting ready, bickering snidely with one another, Bonnie and Elena are getting ready as well. Elena gets a call; the mayor’s wife can’t find the pocket watch that belonged to her father, and her grandfather. She finds it in Jeremy’s room, and accuses him of trying to sell it on eBay for pot. Jeremy, hurt and upset, tells her it was supposed to be his, since the watch is passed to the first-born son as per family tradition. He tells Elena to take the watch and get out. Damon decides to have a drink with Stefan, but just as he’s about to sip, –he pours it out. Damon knew about the poison!

Damon claims that now he’s going to the party angry, hinting at possible violence: “Who knows what I’ll do?” At the party, Tyler immediately drags Vickie out of the crowd, around to the back, i.e., away from his parents and their hoity toity friends. Zach comments on the failure of Stefan’s first attempt to poison Damon; but this was how Stefan wanted it to work out. This way, Stefan figures, Damon won’t see another attempt coming so soon. Elena quietly enters Jeremy’s room, and puts the watch on his desk, then leaves. As soon as Caroline enters with Damon, her mother automatically asserts her disapproval of Caroline’s date.

Floating amongst the party, Jenna is reunited with Logan Fell, –her evil ex, and blows him off before he can get too friendly with her. In one of the artifacts rooms, Elena is reading the original Founders Party guest list, –and sees Stefan and Damon on it! Elena begins to ask Stefan about it, but Damn and Caroline approach. Damon tells her that they were the “original” Salvatore brothers; their ancestors. With some verbal pushing and prodding, Caroline manages to drag Stefan out to dance, leaving Elena alone with Damon. He apologizes for the way he had acted the other night, and trying to kiss her. Meanwhile, out on the dance floor, Stefan gives Caroline a glass of champagne.

Damon tells Elena a story about the “original” Salvatore brothers. The church that was fired on, killing civilians, was actually purposely set ablaze to kill Union sympathizers, and someone dear to the Salvatore brothers was trapped inside. When they tried to rescue her, they were shot in cold blood; “murdered.” Elena tells Damon gently that she doesn’t want to get caught up in the issues between him and Stefan. Outside, Tyler and Vickie are talking by the lake, and once again, the hard-headed Vickie suspects that she’s being kept out of the loop because she’s not good enough for him. They get into a fight, and Vickie tries to drag him off, but Tyler gets pissed and shakes her off.

Just as things start to get ugly, Tyler’s mom comes out of nowhere, and snaps at him. He introduces them, and Vickie leaves. Once her back is turned, Ty’s mom, the mayor’s wife, calls Vickie trash. Bonnie, alone at a table, sits quietly, and suddenly, ignites an unlit candle, much to her surprise. Stefan offers Damon a drink, when he and Elena join Stefan and Caroline on the dance floor; feeling smart, Damon declines the champagne. Stefan and Elena dance, and Caroline remarks how cute they look together; Damon tells her not to talk, looking, despite himself, a bit sad.

Logan approaches Jenna again at the party, and asks for a second chance, but again, Jenna blows him off. While outside, Elena tells Stefan about Damon apologizing to her, and asks about Katherine. Stefan begins to shut down, saying that Damon is trying to pull them apart, and Elena says it’s working. Bonnie tells Elena that she feels guilty, because she planted the seed of doubt, but Elena doesn’t blame her. Damon drags Caroline upstairs, and makes her block a doorway while he ’steals’ a yellow crystal, in a tarnished setting from a secret compartment in an old chest. He claims it’s his, but Caroline has doubts.

For the third and final time, Logan approaches Jenna, and begs her for a date, –this time, she accepts, and tells him she’ll go to lunch with him. In the dining room, the mayor’s wife complains to a waiter to light candles; to help him out, Bonnie tries lighting them again with her mind. At the last second, she turns away, giving up. When she turns around again, every candle in the room is lit. In the bathroom, Elena notices a bruise under Caroline’s scarf, –and suddenly, finds all the bite marks and bruises all over her. Caroline runs off, making a half-attempt to justify Damon, while Elena runs off to find Stefan.

Elena tells Stefan she takes everything back, that she believes him about Damon being a lunatic, and tries to tell her about what’s happening with Caroline. Stefan tells her he’s “taking care of it,” and asks the confused and suspicious Elena to just trust him. She tells Stefan that trust must be earned, –while they’re talking, Stefan spies Damon hauling Caroline away from the party, into the gardens. Stefan leaves Elena there, and goes after Damon. At Elena’s house, Vickie comes by to see Jeremy, and they make up, –aww, there’s lots of sweet, cute teenage making out. But back at the party, something sinister is about to happen.

Caroline is crying, and telling Damon she’s sorry, that she didn’t tell Elena anything. He soothes her, and when she’s at ease, he sinks his teeth into her. He attempts to drain her, –but instead of poisoning Damon himself, Stefan steps out of the shadows and reveals, he poisoned Caroline’s blood instead. Caroline lives, and finds the yellow crystal on the ground. Elena finds Caroline, and comforts her, –while Stefan locks Damon away underground. But woah, big surprise! something weird is going on, –all the town officials, the mayor and his wife, the sheriff, the news-anchor, are talking about the five drained bodies, and declare “they are back.” Sounds like the next episode is bound to be spooky, and a little more revealing. So what are the town officials up to? Just what kind of witch is Bonnie? And what the heck was the yellow crystal? We can’t wait to find out, so we can tell you all about it!

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 3

We get another recap of the last episode; so if you missed anything, don’t worry, each new show makes sure to fill you in on the bold points of the old show. Caroline wakes up beside a sleeping Damon, feels her bite wound, and tries to sneak out, but he catches her. She puts up one hell of a fight, but in the end, he catches her. It looks like she might be dead, so cross your fingers! Bonnie, after her strange vision or psychic experience with Stefan, warns Elena about him. Vickie, meanwhile, attempts a “friendship” with Jeremy, but Jeremy asks her, accusingly, if she only wanted him for his drugs.

After Bonnie’s experience with Stefan, she’s aloof, and indifferent towards him. Tyler begins needling Matt about Stefan and Elena. Elena, disheartened by Bonnie disliking Stefan, makes plans to get the two of them to mingle over dinner. Ty, in an attempt to avenge Matt, throws a football at Stefan’s head when he isn’t looking, –but with vampire reflexes, he whips around, catches the ball, and throws it back hard enough to hurt Ty’s hands. Elena begins encouraging Stefan to play football, who admits that he knows the game, but isn’t sure if he wants to try out.

Stefan outsmarts the history teacher, –also the football coach, –yet again, after a heated debate on historical dates. When Elena joins back up with the cheerleaders, she sneaks in an invitation to dinner, and convinces Bonnie to come and hang out a little more with Stefan. Meanwhile, the entire day, Caroline has been missing, –but just as everyone begins to wonder, she suddenly shows up with Damon, in a convertible. Caroline makes a point of letting Elena know she has the “other brother.”

When Stefan decides to go out for football, Tyler and a half-hearted Matt, get aggressive. Stefan is of course, unphased, and Elena watches proudly from the bleachers. But when Stefan overhears Ty’s suspicion of Stefan’s skills on the field, he allows Ty to tackle him. When Stefan straightens up, one of his fingers is broken, –gross out moment, beware, –he snaps it back into place. When Stefan returns home, he finds Damon reading his diary aloud. There’s a short confrontation, and Damon patronizes Stefan, claiming condescendingly that he too, may want to live a human life, before cracking up laughing. Damon takes off to his date with Caroline.

In the kitchen, Bonnie and Elena prepare dinner, –take out, and make it look like they actually cooked. Bonnie knows where everything in the kitchen is, and somewhat convinces both Elena, and herself, that maybe she is a witch, or psychic. At dinner, Bonnie is indifferent to Stefan, until they start discussing Salem witches; just as she begins to thaw, the doorbell rings. Guess who? It’s Caroline and Damon! After an awkward struggle at the door, Elena invites Damon inside, –huge mistake. Caroline makes several idiotic, insensitive remarks about Elena’s past, which Damon smoothly segues into the Katherine subject.

At the Grill, Ty is being all gross and flirty with Vickie, and Matt remarks to Jeremy nearby that even though he loves his sister, she makes you “work for it.” Jeremy replies nastily, that he thought she was “pretty easy.” Jeremy walks past Ty, who rudely shoves into him, –there’s almost a nasty fight, but Matt manages to break it up. He angrily faces Vickie, and asks her what she’s doing. At Elena’s house, Damon is helping Elena clean up after dinner in the kitchen. Elena brings up Katherine, and Damon confides the Katherine was beautiful, but quoted some of her negative qualities as well. He also tells Elena about Katherine’s death, in a fire. Elena, astute, picks up that both Stefan and Damon dated Katherine. Damon admits it, and tells her his brother would have told it differently.

Damon brings up Elena’s uneasy return to cheerleading, and when she shares her feelings of disinterest in resuming the program, he advises her to give it up and start something new. Elena surprises Damon when she offers him condolences for Katherine’s death, saying that he lost Katherine too. There’s a moment, between them when it looks like Damon might be beginning to actually feel something. In the other room, Stefan tries to get Caroline to take off her scarf, suspecting the truth, –that Damon has bitten her and is now controlling her. When Caroline tells him she can’t, all she knows is that she can’t, his suspicions are confirmed.

Damon interrupts him, and forcefully sends Caroline to the kitchen to help Elena, and Stefan angrily tells his brother that humans are people not puppets. Damon counters, letting him know that now that Elena has invited him in, he can come back any time he wants. Later, Stefan and Elena are making out in bed; clothes are shed, but before anything happens, Stefan suddenly turns into Damon, smiling up at her. Elena screams and wakes up; a crow watches from the window sill. Damon has Stefan worried; he tries to come up with a way to protect her, and takes an old wooden box from his wardrobe where he keeps his diaries.

The next day, after Elena confronts Caroline about quitting cheerleading, Stefan gives her the small wooden box; inside is a locket or a pillbox necklace, and inside is a mysterious herb. The football coach, also the history teacher, Mr. Tanner, announces starting Stefan at that night’s game; automatically raising Ty’s hackles. Instead of picking a fight with Stefan, Ty spots Jeremy, drunk and provokes him instead. Jeremy rises to the occasion, and punches Tyler in the face. A crowd gathers; Vickie, Matt, Elena, and everyone else that happened to be in the neighborhood. Once Ty has Jeremy on the ground, bloody, Stefan pulls Tyler off of him.

Instead of backing down, Jeremy grabs a broken whiskey bottle and moves to slash Ty with it, but misses and cuts open Stefan’s hand. Elena sees, and after she tries to talk to Jeremy, she checks Stefan’s hand; the wound is gone. Elena is a little worried about the sudden missing wound, and it stays on her mind. Elena finds Bonnie, and asks her what the real deal is with her feelings about Stefan; Bonnie admits to Elena that when Stefan touched her, he felt cold; like death. She also tells her that she keeps seeing the numbers 8, 14, and 22. The girls dismiss the numbers, but Bonnie’s feelings about Stefan remain.

While Elena fetches something out of her car, she runs into Damon, who tries to throw his Jedi-vampire-mind-trick mojo on her, but it doesn’t work. She slaps him, then sends him on his way. At the football field, Matt calls a truce with Stefan, even though he’s with his ex now. Matt heads in, leaving Damon to needle Stefan about the vervain necklace he gave Elena. Instead, Stefan turns on his brother, patronizes him for hypocrisy, because he knows that Damon won’t kill him, loved Katherine, and still does. To prove him wrong, Damon suddenly attacks the coach, and begins gnawing on him.

Matt confronts Ty about being an asshole, then takes off, and soon finds the coach; an ambulance is called, but it’s too late. Coach Tanner is dead, and the significance of Bonnie’s numbers is revealed: Building 8, cop car plates read 14, and a number stenciled on the parking lot reads 22. As the show winds down, we see Ty walking past, and saying nothing to a somber Matt; perhaps a friendship destroyed. Vickie tells Jeremy softly that the drugs weren’t why she wanted to be around him. Elena is writing in her diary; she’s worried about the animal attacks, and the disappearance of Stefan’s wound. Stefan is writing that he was wrong about Damon having any humanity left. Meanwhile, Damon watches over Elena as she sleeps, softly touching her face, and smiling; when her eyes open, he vanishes.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 2

We open with a recap of everything that happened last episode, and then bring on the traditional urban legend camping scenario. The boyfriend goes to investigate scary noise outside tent, the girlfriend hears dripping noises on tent, investigates, sees dead boyfriend, runs, dies, …and Damon has struck again! I wonder if they’ll always open the show with Damon’s dinner habits? Also turning into a trend is the opening sequence where Elena and Stefan simultaneously confide in their journals. This episode, they’re both happy to start the day, because they know they’ll see each other.

Jeremy shows concern by visiting the hospitalized Vickie, and the big news in this episode is the return of a comet; the whole town gathers in the square to watch. Elena and Stefan are getting more friendly, perhaps their cute little thing is blossoming into a full fledged fling! Bonnie is getting more into her witchcraft thing, or at least the psychic aspect of it. Caroline is pursuing Damon, but it seems like every time she sees him, he disappears again. Matt fills Elena in on how Vickie is doing, her whispering “vampire” when she woke, and the two share an awkward “ex” moment; Matt still wants her back. Stefan overhears.

Aunt Jenna is confronted in a parent-teacher conference about Jeremy’s behavior, and for a moment, seems to hit on her before he insults her about her parenting. After overhearing Matt and Elena talk about Vickie, Stefan tries to glamour or “compell” Vickie; erase her memory and convince her it was an animal that bit her. However, Matt sees Stefan in the hospital, and chases him, but he doesn’t find him; Stefan vanishes out a window. Meanwhile, Elena’s friends, Bonnie and Caroline, encourage her to take the next step with Stefan.

Jenna attempts to talk to Jeremy, reliving her experiences with drugs in order to get his attention, but no dice. When Matt questions Vickie about her panic attack, that she had earlier when he was visiting her, Vickie claims she has no idea what he’s talking about, and tells him an animal attacked her. Jeremy comes in while Matt is visiting, and explains to her that it was him who found her, and carried her out of the woods; there’s a cute moment when the two seem to actually have a semblance of romantic future.

Elena goes to visit Stefan on her friends’ advice, and instead, meets Damon, who reveals information on the long lost Katherine, but flirts and teases Elena as well. Stefan interrupts them, and coldly dismisses Elena, but is really just pissed at Damon. Stefan and Damon have a short confrontation, but nothing is resolved, as always; they snap at each other. Back at Elena’s house, Aunt Jenna tries to confront Jeremy again about the drug issue, this time with negative reinforcement, but he blows her off again.

Despite Stefan’s Jedi-mind-tricks, Vickie is beginning to have nightmares about Damon. Bonnie and Elena talk more about Stefan while they’re viewing the comet, at a big community event in Mystic Falls, Caroline sees Damon again, but he disappears once more. Vickie and Jeremy talk for a moment while she’s at work, and she complains of her weak pain pills, –so Jeremy gives her stronger meds. Vickie shoots Tyler down when he approaches. At the event, Matt and Stefan face each other, and there’s a poetic, silent moment and a visually striking choice between men; Elena stands apart and eventually Stefan joins her.

Elena and Stefan discuss the comet, and he apologizes to her, –Elena brings up Katherine, whom she found out about through Damon. Elena doesn’t believe that she and Stefan have much of a chance, so she leaves him standing there. Vickie meets Damon for a moment, and recalls that she knows him; the vague meeting ends when she walks off, and goes to the bathroom to pop more pain pills. In the bathroom, she’s attacked by Damon. Everyone begins wondering where Vickie is, –no one’s seen her, and Matt is worried. The group of friends search for her, but Stefan hears her struggling with Damon.

Damon has Vickie teetering on the edge of a roof, when Stefan arrives to try to stop him. Damon brings Vickie’s memory back, convinces her it was a vampire that attacked her, and that it was Stefan, not Damon. Stefan refuses to be moved to kill Vickie, and tells Damon to let her scream vampire if she wants to. Instead, Damon erases Vickie’s memory, then leaves. Stefan brings Vickie back to Matt, who thanks him for returning her. Bonnie decides to do a little match-making, but when she gives Stefan Elena’s cell number and email, she gets the shocked look on her face, like another vision.

At Elena’s house, she walks in on Aunt Jenna searching Jeremy’s room for drugs; she finds some, but confides to Elena that she feels inadequate, and that the job is impossible. Elena tries to comfort Jenna. In a dark parking lot, Damon is stalking a frightened Caroline, but he finally talks to her, and they act pretty sweet to one another. Elena decides to visit Stefan after talking to Jenna, and admits to him that she’s afraid that things will work out, that they’ll be happy, only to lose everything again. After they kiss, leaving at least that aspect more positive, the scene changes, and Damon bites Caroline. Oh no… I always thought she was so sweet. I hope Caroline makes it.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 1, Episode 1

Right away with the Vampire Diaries, you can see that this vampire show won’t be a PG-13 knock-off of True Blood; there’s a different atmosphere. The adjective “Twilight-esque” doesn’t apply. The background is dark and foreboding from the get-go, the vampire introduces himself, and we know already that vampires are not a culturally acceptable, if taboo subject. Vampires are still a secret, shrouded in pulp mystery, so dank and hidden, that when you metaphorically pull the cover back, to immerse yourself in the fiction, you have to peel the pages apart with a fingernail. They’re yellow, water-stained, and cheap, but god they hold horror, and in this show, maybe horror will hold you too. In short, this particular show holds promise, and potential, just like any new book, film, or pulp fiction, beckoning you from a shelf, to come over, crack the spine, tear the cellophane, peek into the plastic slip for just a glimpse of the cover… a tiny look. Is grabbing the remote any different? Peeling your eyes away from whatever sports show, cooking show, or romantic sitcom that has held you slack-jawed and barely coherent for the last half hour; now you’ve found something you can sink your teeth into, or maybe, it’s found you.

Two people are killed by a vampire immediately. The vampire narrates, and introduces himself as such; he’s over one hundred years old. We’re introduced to Elena, the female lead, after the murders. The girl has obviously experienced trauma, but doesn’t reveal until later that both of her parents were killed in a car accident, and only she escaped alive. The vampire, Stefan Salvatore, has a fascination with the girl, Elena, because she resembles someone from his past, whom is alluded to as having died violently. Elena and her brother, Jeremy, obviously winding his way down the path of a trauma-fueled rebellious adolescence, live with their Aunt Jenna. Aunt Jenna isn’t much older, but manages to endear herself immediately as someone scatterbrained, concerned, considerate, and extremely busy. Elena is worried about Jeremy, but her brother is guarded, defensive, and indifferent.

Elena’s friend, Bonnie was recently informed she was psychic, but doesn’t take it seriously. She’s obviously the more cheerful, and straightforward counterpart in the friendship between her and Elena. A crow smacks into the windshield while they’re in the car, sparking anxiety in Elena. The moment passes, and they go back to their discussion of Bonnie’s psychic awareness. The town is Mystic Falls, and who could have predicted a flamboyant town name to be thrown into the mix? Not I. The love conflict is opened wide, when we’re introduced to the ex, –the blond varsity type, Matt, whom Elena dumped after her parents’ death. Next introduced is the flaking-around-the-edges blond friend, Caroline. Stefan is checking into the office, and using mind-control powers to secure his position in high school hell.

We meet Stefan at last! His eyebrows are out of control, and he bumps into Elena as she’s coming out of the “men’s room”. She was interrogating Jeremy, who had been pouring Visine in his eyes, and passing out pills on campus. They go their way quickly, but cast glances, and cute puppy dog eyes at each other in classes. Bonnie notices and teases Elena. And the wheels of love roll on over the gravel road, kicking up dust in their tracks… After school, Elene stops at a graveyard to take a dismal emotional inventory of her day, recording it in her diary. A bizarre fog rolls in, and a crow adds some menace to the situation. Elena feels watched, runs away, and stumbles into Stefan, who she mistakes for her stalker. He clears himself of stalking her, at least partially. When he notices she’s hurt, and bleeding, he turns away, red flowing into his eyes, and takes off suddenly.

At ‘The Grill’, the high school kids gather en-masse. We learn Jeremy has been casually screwing Vicky, Matt’s sister, –also claimed by Tyler, the irritating jock, also aggressively possessive. Matt isn’t pleased, but doesn’t say too much on the subject of their “hooking up”, other than calling his friend Ty a douche. Caroline gives Bonnie the lowdown on Stefan, and has managed to collect a Wiki page worth of trivial data and a hefty crush on the guy. Just as Elena’s out the door to meet Bonnie at the Grill, she runs into Stefan, who was “about to knock”, and is there returning her diary, that she left in the cemetery after a hasty flight from her Mystery Stalker. He apologizes for taking off earlier, and promises he didn’t read her diary; she invites him to ‘the Grill’, and he accepts.

Maybe we should just mention that Matt still has a thing for Elena, and seems like a decent guy rather than the usual hostile jock. Probably because Elena has good taste and wouldn’t be interested in a hostile Matt discusses the torch he carries for Elena with Bonnie; then Elena enters with Stefan. Needless to say, all confidence, or potential confidence, has disappeared. Matt introduces himself, doing the classy thing. Later, the group of friends and the newcomer agree to go to a back-to-school party. Stefan reveals that he’s staying with his uncle, and his parents are dead. Stefan is actually staying with his nephew, Zach, who later in the evening, accuses Stefan of murdering the two people in the beginning of the show. Stefan denies it, but Zach still thinks he shouldn’t be there, and it’s hinted that there was some huge scandal in the past concerning their family. Zach leaves him, and Stefan looks into an old wardrobe; it’s filled with diaries dating back over a hundred years. He chooses one, and in the front is a photograph labeled “Katherine 1864″, of a woman who could be Elena’s twin.

Stefan demonstrates an uncanny knowledge of Civil War-era Mystic Falls in History. Later he seeks Elena at the party, naturally littered with signs of underage drinking. He’s dragged off by Caroline first, while Bonnie and Elena discuss where he might be. Elena suggests Bonnie use her facetious ‘psychic powers’ to find him. Elena hands Bonnie a beer bottle dubbed the ‘crystal ball’, and Bonnie has a startling vision: She recites the experience Elena had in the cemetery. Bonnie is shocked, and worried about her friend. Bonnie excuses herself as drunk, leaving Elena, with Stefan suddenly standing in front of her.

Three important things happen at the party. First, Elena tells Stefan about the traumatic loss of her parents last spring, and he sympathizes. Second, Ty almost rapes Vickie in the woods, but Jeremy followed, and tells Tyler to leave. With Tyler gone, Vickie tears into Jeremy for being infatuated with her. She takes off into the woods, leaving him feeling like an idiot, while Stefan firmly, and thoroughly, dismisses Caroline, who takes it pretty badly. Third, –a girl alone in the woods with a homicidal vampire tear-assing around? Yeah, she’s attacked, then discovered by Jeremy, trying to escape his sister, following her drunk brother into the woods. They carry Vickie into the picnic shelter. Matt, who sees Stefan back away and leave, is immediately suspicious. Stefan runs home, tells Zach there’s been another attack, and heads to his room. A crow flies in to meet him, and we’re introduced to Stefan’s sexy brother Damon, who unfortunately is the homicidal vampire terrorizing Mystic Falls.

Damon harasses his brother, and reveals that he knows about his interest in Elena. Vicky is bustled away into an ambulance, and an animal control unit searches for the creature that attacked her. Before they break up, to go their separate ways into the night, Bonnie confronts Elena and tells her that she doesn’t believe she’s psychic, but that when she had the vision, she felt it was only the beginning. Apparently, Damon is a malignant nutcase, but god, he’s sexy. He and Stefan fight, and Damon reveals that Stefan needs his ring to walk in the daylight, is weaker than Damon because he doesn’t feed on humans. It’s hinted that he and Stefan killed Katherine. Truth be told however, it’s also revealed that Damon has the better sense of humor. At a diner, Caroline miserably compares herself to Elena, while Bonnie tries to listen sympathetically. At the hospital, Matt watches over Vicky, who wakes up and whispers “vampire.”

Elena and Stefan wind their evening down by writing in their diaries; Jeremy stares sadly down at a framed photo of his parents, and a stranger smiles at Caroline from across the room. She smiles back at Damon. Elena is finishing her entry when she sees Stephan in her yard; she greets him at the door and he tells her he just needed to make sure she was okay. The episode ends with an ambiguous answer to his question, and her inviting him inside.
