This has got to be one of the best kinds of vampire books – one that has tons of stories in it! It’s official name is The Vampire Archives: The Most Complete Volume of Vampire Tales Ever Published. And if the book is as thorough as its title, it’s sure to be!

The book includes 86 different tales, poems, and short stories (both fictional and non-fictional.) Among these stories are some of the older works such as Dracula’s Guest as well as newer stuff, such as The Lovely Lady by D.H. Lawrence. Even Anne Rice and Lord Byron make an appearance in the book. But the one that I’m most excited about? That’s got to be the story Popsy by my fave author, Stephen King. The entire book was put together by Otto Penzler, who from the sounds of it, did a brilliant job of mixing only the very greatest vampire stories into one full, complete anthology! Plus, mingled in amongst these we’ll also be able to find some history and fun facts on vampires. The complete volume, indeed!

But in case you need some help breaking it all down, the book is divided up into sections for you. 13 sections, of course. These sections start with “Pre-Dracula” and include a section for poems, vampires from different regions, and different types of vampires, such as psychic vampires. And, if you’re still not feeling full after this reading, an entire bibliography of vampire books wraps it up at the end.

This book is truly something that every vampire fan needs. I am most excited about the King story, but I love the idea that someone has actually compiled everything all in one place for us – history, trivia, short stories, poems, and a full list of even more reading! What more could we possibly ask for?

Polidori was the friend and personal physician of the infamous rogue and poet, Lord Byron. He was also part of the close-knit circle of friends, including Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Byron, and Claire Clairmont, Mary’s stepsister, and also Byron’s woman of the hour. Polidori was Byron’s personal physician, and traveled with him through Europe. Though he recorded his travels with Byron in his diaries, that were later published, sadly much of the diaries were destroyed or censored by his sister, who originally had them published. A considerable loss to the literary community, and Byron lovers worldwide, the diaries would have said and revealed much more about Byron’s character. Polidori accompanied Byron to the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva, where Byron and Polidori became fast friends with the nearby Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin (later the famous Mary Shelley), and Claire Clairmont.

So one night, after reading scary stories to each other from Tales of the Dead (you can still find re-edited and re-translated versions of this book today), they decide to each write a scary story. Byron wrote ‘Fragment of a Novel’ which he later discard, and Percy took up ‘A Fragment of a Ghost Story’, –which were actually five ghost stories he wrote down. Mary soon-to-be Shelley did not participate, but most say this night inspired her to write Frankenstein. Polidori wrote The Vampyre, using Byron’s base materials in his novel Fragment, as the foundation for his own tale. The vampyre in his story was closely modeled after Lord Byron himself, at least, as Polidori saw him. The story follows Lord Ruthven, and a young man named Aubrey, who accompanies Ruthven on a trip to Rome.

Ruthven is described in the short story by Polidori as “a man entirely absorbed in himself, who gave few other signs of his observation of external objects, than the tacit assent to their existence, implied by the avoidance of their contact…” and “the light laughter of the fair only attracted his attention, that he might by a look quell it, and throw fear into those breasts where thoughtlessness reigned.” Despite the overall arrogance and malignancy of the Lord Ruthven character, Aubrey is attracted, and accompanies Ruthven to Rome, where shortly after, Ruthven seduces the daughter of a mutual acquaintance. Aubrey leaves Ruthven for Greece, where he falls for Ianthe, the innkeeper’s daughter, who tells him of the vampyre. To Aubrey’s horror, she describes perfectly the character of Lord Ruthven. Later, Ruthven arrives, and Ianthe is killed by a vampire. But Aubrey is none-the-wiser and instead accompanies Ruthven once more.

What, did you think I was going to tell you the ending? Sorry, you’ll have to read the book; some good old-fashioned extra-long and unknown English words will be good for you, expands the vocabulary. Anyway, sadly, Polidori was never quite officially credited for the story; it was published and accredited to Lord Byron. Byron attempted to publish his own Fragment, in order to show people the difference, but no such luck. It wasn’t until long after Polidori’s apparent suicide that the story finally appeared with Polidori’s name above it. He died when he was only 26 years old, and probably still with-holding plenty more scary stories.

There are hundreds of vampire novels out there, but what about poetry? We have covered the first vampire poem, Der Vampir, but what about the other notable poetry contributions out there? There have been some remarkable poems written about vampires, many that came out long before the genre-changing novel Dracula, and others written by the greats that came out after.

Some noteworthy classic vampire poems:

Der Vampire by Heinrich August Eckenfelder (1748)

Lenore by Gottfied August Bürger (1773)

Die Braut von Korinth by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1797)

Christabel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (date unknown)

Thalaba the Destroyer by Robert Southey (1800)

The Giaour by Lord Byron (1813)

La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats (1819)

Lamia by John Keats (1820)

The Vampire Bride by Henry Liddell (1833)

La Morte Amoureuse by Theophile Gautier (1836)

The Vampyre by James Clerk Maxwell (1845)

Le Vampire by Charles Baudelaire (1857)

Les Metamorphoses du Vampire by Charles Baudelaire (date unknown)

The Vampire by Rudyard Kipling (1897)

A list of classic vampire poems written by some of the greats., there are of course, many more out there but these are some of the most noteworthy. There are also countless modern vampire poems written recently, many of which are truly breathtaking and incredible.

What is your favorite vampire poem out there, new or old? Leave a comment and let us know.

My favorite from the list above is Le Vampire by Charles Baudelaire. Unfortunately I do not speak French, which is what the poem was written in, but many poets since have rewritten the poem in English. My favorite version is this…

The Vampire
By Jacques LeClercq

Thou, sharper than a dagger thrust
Sinking into my plaintive heart,
Thou, frenzied and arrayed in lust,
Strong as a demon host whose art

Possessed my humbled soul at last,
Made it thy bed and thy domain,
Strumpet, to whom I am bound fast
As is the convict to his chain,

The stubborn gambler to his dice,
The rabid drunkard to his bowl,
The carcass to its vermin lice —
O thrice-accursèd be thy soul!

I called on the swift sword to smite
One blow to free my life of this,
I begged perfidious aconite
For succor in my cowardice.

But sword and poison in my need
Heaped scorn upon my craven mood,
Saying: “Unworthy to be freed,
From thine accursed servitude,

O fool, if through our efforts, Fate
Absolved thee from thy sorry plight,
Thy kisses would resuscitate
Thy vampire’s corpse for thy delight.”

- Moonlight

In fiction of course, the epidemy of vampire literature, would be Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. There were sexual undertones, of course, relaying vampirism to be a sort of sexually transmitted disease. Its themes of blood, death, and sex made it’s way to Victorian Europe, rattled because of the spread of tuberculosis and syphilis. But the vampire was first introduced to Western literature, by Lord Byron, in his poem The Giaour. Though, his manservant, John Polidori, wrote the first vampire story, Lord Ruthven, which was partly based on Byron himself. No doubt for his certain promiscuous behaviour with women, which was a characterization of the romantic perspective of vampirism. The story was written during a “ghost story competition” in which Lord Byron was said to have encouraged his friend Percy Shelley’s wife, Mary Shelley, to write a ghost story. Apparently, she did.

Vampires have dominated American fiction through many popular modern authors, namely Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, Valerie Hardin, Margaret L. Carter, Stephen King, amongst many others. Anne Rice is famous for her widely popular Vampire Chronicles, and various other novels written under other pseudonyms. She portrays the romantic vampire, both breaking boundaries of old vampire legends, and regenerating and rebuilding the old to complete a new breed of vampire. The beautiful deadly killers that have captivated audiences globally.

Charlaine Harris has written various mystery and horror novels, but is now a rising star of vampire fiction, with her debut vampire novel Dead Until Dark, featuring a humourous female heroine. Her refreshingly original style is highly entertaining, and published globally. Valerie Hardin, well known on the web for her six books of Gothic poetry, and novella Crimson Kisses, and will soon be collaborating with other authors to produce young adult novels. Margaret L. Carter is widely known for her paperback paranormal romances, among them, Tall, Dark, and Deadly. Stephen King’s most popular vampire novels, Salem’s Lot, and The Night Flier, still terrorize the world.
