This bloodsucker post is a little different from some of the others. We’re going back into the world of history and folklore, a land of devious and wicked dark magics. Today’s creature is that of the Malaysian polong, the polong is a vampiric bottle imp or an evil spirit used to do horrible things to others.

The polong is created by placing the blood of a murdered man into a bottle with a long narrow neck, saying prayers over it and reciting some arcane enchantment. Seven days to two weeks later the sound of chirping birds can be heard from the bottle. Once this happens the creator cuts his finger and sticks it inside the bottle for the newly born polong to drink from. Everyday this will be done, the polong drinking the creator’s blood, what this does is creates a tighter bond between the creator and the polong. When matured, the polong will attack on command and do whatever the creator bids it. If he wants it to attack someone that wronged him he can, or if he wants to rent it out for money to those in need of an assassin then he can do that as well.

If that isn’t bad enough the polong has a kind of pet or plaything called the pelesit, a spirit that enters a victim’s body and clears the way. These victims quickly go totally insane, ripping off clothing, attacking and biting friends and becoming overall very sick. At this point medicine men are called in to try and discover the name of the polong’s creator from the polong. Now, spirits vary in individual powers but a magician may be able to get them to lie or blame someone that is innocent, therefore keeping the real creator safe.

You know someone has been murdered by a polong when a lot of blood comes from the victim’s mouth and the inside of the mouth is greatly bruised. I bet you are wondering what this polong looks like; to the human eye the polong looks like a tiny woman, no bigger than the top joint of the little finger. Other than bottling this tiny being to keep it from the victim there are few remedies. Removable can be attempted, usually through charms – some charms destroy the polong while others neutralize it.

Time again for another vampire myth. This particular vampire species differing greatly from the classic western image of a alluring caped being of the night. No, i’m afraid the Penanggalan is nothing like that at all.

The Penanggalan is a dreadful vampire that reins from Malaysia (different from the other Malaysian vampire I covered before). This is a very unique creature being that it is nothing more than a floating head and neck and has intestines dangling beneath it. Now, before you start picturing a head rolling around the feet of would be victims, this vampire can fly.

This bodiless vampire is female and always female. And like so many vampire myths from around the world this female became a vampire because she died during childbirth. Although, depending on the area the myth is a bit different. Some said that the head was controlled by a hostile spirit or created by an evil sorcerer. Others said that a woman became a Penanggalan by being surprised by a man during religious penance. She was SO surprised that her reaction was ripping off her own head and pulling out her intestines…yea, that’s how I react when surprised too…yeaaa totally. Anyway, these disgusting dripping intestines would cause sores if they so happened to drip on a living person. The Penanggalan also uses mass amounts of vinegar to shrink its intestines, so that they will fit in the head/neck. Also, these intestines just so happen to glow in that dark.

The Penanggalan feeds on children or on babies still in the womb. Sometimes it likes to torment a child by crying out “Mengilai!” whenever it is born. This horrible beast drinks so much blood from a child that it reduces it to little more than an empty shell. In some versions of the myth this vampire did in fact have a body but left it to feed. Once it finished feeding the head would then return to the body to reattach itself.

Because of this vampire and its love for children, women in childbirth decorated their home with special leaves, thistles with sharp thorns from the jeruju. The thorns will entangle the Penanggalan’s intestines, holding her until sunrise when she is most vulnerable. If left in sunlight for too long it would shrivel up into nothing and of course die. It can also be killed by destroying the heart inside its abandoned body. This may sound simple enough but this monster is highly dangerous, especially when captured. The Penanggalan is incredibly vicious and will attack anyone who attempts to hinder it. Its teeth are incredibly strong and its eyes can shoot hellish fire. In some versions of the myth this vampire can shoot deadly venom that would paralyze anyone that came too close. In yet another version the Penanggalan had a deadly cry that could stun a person, once stunned the vampire would then feed on the person before flying off.

So what have we learned so far? That Malaysia has some very odd vampire myths, much different than the vampire lore we are so used to .

The abilities of a vampire are numerous, and naturally depends on what vampire is in what area, for one to know what kind of things they might be capable of. For example; many species of vampire are not know to be able to fly, however, the bruxsa in Portugal, the lansuir in Malaysia, and aswang in the Philippines all have the ability to fly. Other vampires native to cultures in different regions must first change shape to fly, which is but one more of their many talents. A vampire might turn into a dog, cat, bat, wolf, insects, and pests or rodents; anything to escape destruction. Many cultures believed that during the cremation of a vampire if you were to let even one maggot, or bug to escape from his corpse during the burning that he would have survived. Vampires also have the ability to defy gravity, in some cases, such as Count Dracula’s nimble talent of scaling walls like a spider, head down facing the ground.

To invade locked doors, or escape in tightly cramped areas, the vampire is able to transform himself into a mist, or vapour, so that he can travel beneath doors or through keyholes. Others believed that he was able to reduce in size or dimension, so that he could slip through narrow spaces. The vampire also possesses great mental and physical strength; if he is not able to hypnotize his enemy, he will surely have the strength of several men to defend himself. Some vampires have the power to control other animals, making them familiars or servants, while others are able to control the elements. Some believe that vampires are responsible for crop failure, and bad harvests. The Balkan people, among a few other cultures believed that a vampire could have intercourse with a human female, producing their dhampir offspring. Many cultures believed that vampires naturally possess eternal life, or at least live very long lives. In India and the Ukraine, some species of vampire stole human organs, while the Romanians believed that vampires caused impotence.

Despite the vampires many numerous strengths, they also have many weaknesses that render them destructible by man, or skilled hunters. For example, many cultures believe that a vampire is unable to cross over a threshold that they have not been invited into. Others believed that vampires could not cross over running water. European cultures maintained the belief that vampires must sleep during the day, which keeps them in a comatose state. The reason being for sleep during the day, is yet another weakness; vampires are unable to withstand direct sunlight. The vampire in many legends is vulnerable to Christian religious objects, as well as hallowed ground. Some cultures also believed that vampires must return to the soil of their native land in order to regenerate their powers, and to sleep. The other weakness, is that vampires are unable to see themselves in mirrors; this would not seem like a weakness, but was actually used to capture Dracula, in the film Dracula 2000.
