The majority of vampire myths feature a fiendish undead creature that drains every drop of its victim’s blood, but not all vampires are that monstrous, some are a smidge kinder. For example, the Albanian lugat chooses to take only a small amount of blood from their prey, leaving them weakened but alive. While not ideal it’s better than being dead, right?

The lugat may not kill its victims, but it would continue to feed off a single person for a period of days to weeks. The only big problem here is that the lugat’s bite could possibly leave a spiritual, or psychological, taint on the victim that would cause the person to develop a bloodlust of their own. The bloodlust they felt was by no means a murderous or overpowering thing; it was usually an erotic feeling. It is said that these folks infected by the lugat’s bite would become sanguinarians – real people that feel that they absolutely need to feed on blood in order to survive.

The lugat also has some classic vamp powers, like the ability shapeshift into multiple forms – such as a human man, a child, a cow, a stray dog and a few others. But unlike the vampires in stereotypes, the lugat does not have fangs, instead has very normal human teeth. When feeding it simply bites like anyone else would and then sucks blood from the wound.

Even though the lugat isn’t necessarily a deadly vampire, some may still want to kill it. Unfortunately this is easier said than done. The only creature that can kill this vampire is a wolf, but trying to force a wolf into a hunt so isn’t going to go well for you. Unlike the lugat, a wolf will kill your sorry ass if you try to make it do anything it doesn’t want to do.

CSI: NY Joins the Vampire Craze

As we all know vampires are huge everywhere – we see them in books, movies, television and more. They are so big in fact that they seem to have caught the eye of the CSI: NY writers, who wrote an episode about the sanguinarian vampire lifestyle which will air February 3 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT).

“The CSIs team found themselves involved into the obscure world of modern vampirism cult in which blood sharing is at the core of an eccentric but allegedly spiritual brand of religion as a young woman is found dead by exanguination in the Central park snow, drained of blood, with her earlobe chopped and a puncture wound in her neck.”

Just by the episode description I am going to guess that “Sanguine Love” will offend and piss off quite a few sanguinarians out there. I’m not even a sang and I’m annoyed by it. Eccentric cult? Seriously? Oh and I love the “allegedly spiritual” comment. Sigh. Judging by that one paragraph description this episode of CSI probably won’t help the vampire subculture at all, it will most likely increase the judgment and hate they already experience.

A while back one of our writers did an excellent and incredibly informative interview with members of Vampires.nu, as well as one of the founders of the Atlanta Vampire Alliance. If you want a real (and accurate) look into the vampire lifestyle please check it out. Since the CSI: NY episode is about a vampire crime I’m going to quote this part of the interview…

Q: There are very few “vampire crimes”, i.e., crimes involving a vampire perpetrator and a non-vampire victim, but the vampire assailants of the modern era are infamous, and quickly become completely blown out of proportion. How does the vampire community, in your opinion, react to these setbacks?

Merticus: Real vampires are too often mistakenly thrust into the same category of ritual animal or human sacrifice, fetishism or classified as some other form of paraphilia, fanatical religious expression or cults, and labeled as unstable threats to themselves and others. We are almost universally not the individuals who commit ritualistic crimes involving human sacrifice, cannibalism, and murder as sometimes portrayed by the media. We resent when the actions of mentally disturbed individuals are lauded as an example of an inextricable link to modern vampirism; some going further to insinuate that our subculture encourages and condones such behavior. Those who commit acts of violence or similarly egregious behavior within the vampire community are almost universally roleplayers or dabblers who’ve lost touch with reality or long-term psychologically imbalanced persons who pose a threat to society whether they label themselves as a “vampire” or not.

I’ll mostly likely watch this episode of CSI, but I am not expecting good things from it. But who knows, maybe they’ll show an accurate portrayal of the vampire lifestyle. I doubt it, but we‘ll see.

Vampire Fang Implants

Today’s post is about fang implants, not those plastic fangs you pop into your mouth during Halloween, but actual permanent fangs put in by a dentist. Most people that dish out the cash for this incredibly expensive procedure don’t do it to be cool (most, not all). It’s usually a real vampire, like a Sanguinarian or someone interested in major body modification (ever see those people that have horns implanted into their head, just because?) that go through this excruciating procedure. It’s for the serious. But with vampires being so incredibly mainstream, this procedure is getting done more often. It can be a very big step for those part of the vampire lifestyle.

Purpose
These implants are usually for appearances only; they are not actually strong enough or sharp enough to pierce someone’s skin. You can get removable ones but most are permanent, like a cap on your tooth.

Types
There are an assortment of different fangs you can get. Some for the serious and the dead serious. The most common type of fang implant is a slip on.. You slip them on over your canines and then take them out when you want. Ready-made fangs made of dental acrylics are adjusted to fit your mouth by drill. The more permanent type of vampire fang implant needs to be done by a cosmetic dentist. The procedure for fitting them is the same as for a cap. Your original tooth is filed down to a slim line so the cap will fit on. These cannot be taken on and off, unless they are fitted like a bridge to a wire apparatus that slips into your mouth. That last one is painful and costly; it requires a hell of a commitment.

Size
Vampire fang implants are available at various lengths of course. The smaller they are the less they will interfere with your speech and whatnot. Cost varies wildly, depending on which type you get and how professional the fitter is and where you get it done at. You might be able to put together a payment plan with a cosmetic dentist. Dental insurance classifies vampire fang implants as “cosmetic” and will not pay any of the cost, so don’t count on that.

Extras
The first bit of extra info is that you need strong healthy teeth to do this. It is not wise to get these implants if you have rotting teeth or gum disease. The best candidates for dental implants are free from diseases and have an sufficient amount of bone in the jaw to support the implant. Second, you will have to relearn how to speak and eat with these fangs. It’s possible but it takes time.

As for a real life case of someone getting these fangs we’ll take a look at Hungarian Balázs Lázár (pictured left). Balázs went and got the teeth done in Germany, the land of the goths. He said since he got the teeth done he has had to chase off women away and has had many bite requests. Men on the other hand, he says they tend to keep their distance. He also comments that it took some time for him to relearn to speak but that he has no regrets.

To get this procedure done, first think long and hard about it! Do you want to put in the cost and effort; do you want to deal with all the aftermath? If you are ready and have taken everything in consideration then do your research, as much as you can. Then call up a cosmetic dentist, your family dentist probably won’t cut it.

Psi vs. Sang

Psi vs. Sang

Psychic vampires and Sanguinarians are known by many to have a strained relationship. Many, not all, but many Sanguinarians feel that they are much more, prestigious if you will, because they are born into their vampirism rather than “awakened” into it like a psi. Sang vampires are also known for having generations worth of Sanguinarians in their family, which over the years builds a sense pride and respect in oneself. This tends to cause a rivalry between the two. If you are reading this and have no idea what I am talking about, I’ll back up and explain what each is.

First off, Psychic vampires. Psychic vampires are mortals that need to feed off of the life force of others (pranic energy) in order to stay healthy (aka Magnetic Vampirism) not blood. They do not produce enough energy of their own and require feedings from others to replace low energy; they are, in a sense, psychic sponges. If you are feeling oddly drained of emotions there is a possibility that you are the under attack of a psychic vampire.

As I said above, Psychic vampires aren’t born but awakened into what they are (although there is a debate about that). This awakening comes during puberty and it causes an assortment of changes, including: problems sleeping at night, sensitivity to sunlight, they have a difficult time digesting solid food (since they switch to feeding on energy), an increase in psychic abilities and heightened senses.

There are also a few different kinds of psychic vampires. First is Elemental, they feed off of elemental energy, such as thunderstorms. Then there is Sexual Psychic vampires, they feed off of sexual acts (they are not to be confused with incubi or succubi). Finally there are Emotional Psychic vampires and they feed off of emotions.

That covers the basics; there are many MANY different views on Psychic Vampires. Many theories and ideas as to what a Psychic vampire is. Oh and before you ask, it is pretty much a unanimous “no!” when it comes to one psi creating another psi. They can’t be created.

Now to Sanguinarians. Sanguinarians are also mortals but they feed on the blood of others to stay healthy. Like Psychic vamps, Sanguinarians do not produce enough energy and require feedings to replace energy. Sanguinarians are believed to be born as they are, but like Psychic vampires they come into what they are during puberty. They also have the same results as I mentioned above: problems sleeping at night, sensitivity to sunlight…etc.

Now many feel that the only difference between Sanguinarians and Psychic vampires is that one feeds off of life energy while the other feeds off of blood. There are then others that feel that Sanguinarians don’t require pranic energy at all, that they just need something physical in the blood. There are many theories concerning why a Sanguinarian needs to feed on blood. Some feel that it is simply a mental blood fetish, a fun S&M type of game; others feel it is significantly more than a simple fetish.

All these theories on the differences and similarities of the two kinds of vampires may be why they seem to dislike one another. A clash of conflicting ideas and beliefs.

Vampire Subculture: Sanguinarians

The vampire lifestyle, or subculture has existed for many years, although it’s been growing over the last few decades. Many believe that the lifestyle has grown out of and stemmed from the Goth subculture, while still retaining elements and mannerisms of those participating in the S/M lifestyle. The two types of vampires in the subculture are psychic vampires, or energy vampires, and sanguinarian vampires. Sanguinarian derives from a Latin term, that means bloodthirsty; so the sanguinarians feed on small doses of human blood. They believe that they need the blood in order to sustain their health. In the sanguinarian division of the vampire lifestyle, there are donors, vampires, and those who practice autovampirism. Autovampirism is the act of drinking one’s own blood.

Other members of the vampire community, or lifestyle, frown on the act of autovampirism because they believe that it possesses no benefits that can be passed to the drinker. It’s also viewed as a type of physical self abuse, by those in the community, and also by the majority of those outside the vampire lifestyle. Other members of the sanguinarian division of the vampire subculture are the donors. Just as the term implies, a donor is a person either romantically linked, or not to a vampire who allows he or she to drink blood from them. Usually no more than a couple teaspoons worth is taken. Often, there will be a vampire/donor contract drawn up to help set the perimeters of the relationship, as well as protect against any wrongful accusations of assault that may occur.

There are other groups, usually consisting of teenagers who claim to be vampires, roleplaying games, and many other media outlets for the vampire of history. Some are debilitating, and dangerous, such as the much debated Renfield’s syndrome while others just healthy outlets for a creative imagination. Vampires have held us, as a species, fascinated, horrified, and romanticised for hundreds of years. A world without them… would be bloodless.
