Vampires nowadays are known for their incredible beauty – You’ve got the cuties in Twilight, the damn sexy men in True Blood and even an entire gorgeous cast in Vampire Diaries. But, any real horror fan will tell you that vampires aren’t supposed to be sexy, they’re supposed to be horrifying and repulsive. So here’s a shoutout to the top 10 ugliest vampires:

1. Reggie Calder from Salem’s Lot

Salem’s Lot was a television mini-series released in 1979 that was based on a Stephen King novel, and not only did it scare the hell out of people, but it also has one ugly ass vamp in it, a vamp with some messed up teeth.

2. Santanico Pandemonium: From Dusk Till Dawn

Salma Hayek usually looks absolutely flawless, but damn, the makeup team on this movie managed to make her look awful.

3. Jared Nomak from Blade 2

My goodness, that mouth…wow. One of the most memorable things about that movie was its unique, but nasty, vampires.

4. Mark Metcalf from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The Master was probably one of the ugliest villains on the show. While most of the vampires in Buffy were good looking, or at least human looking, this guy was a hideous monster.

5. Amy Peterson from Fright Night

Yea, you’ve got the creepy red eyes, the massively massive mouth and fangs, bad makeup and the old and hideous hair. Not sexy at all.

6. Grandpa Munster from The Munsters

Ok ok, he isn’t disgusting and creepy like the others but either way he is no Edward.

7. Nosferatu from Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror

This classic vampire has it all – the creepy face down to the creepy hands.

8. Radu from Subspecies

Yea, the misshapen face is all this one needs to be horrible.

9. Dracula from Bram Stoker’s Dracula

I am talking the old man version of him, not the young one. He wasn’t even a little attractive.

10. Dwight Renfield from The Night Flier

Do I even need to say anything here? This has got to be the ugliest of them all!

Robin Hood and Vampires in Sherwood Horror

The tale of Robin Hood gets a whole new vampire-filled twist in the upcoming movie Sherwood Horror.

After winning the Grand Prize Winner of the Creative Screenwriting Magazine’s AAA Contest and directed the award winning 2001 short film The Flock, writer and director John Regan is getting ready for his first ever feature film, Sherwood Horror. This flick is a modern reworking of Robin Hood with a horror twist, the movie tells the tale of Rob Locksley, an ex-con who returns home after a six-year absence to find his town under the rule of vampires. He must join forces with his old roughneck hunting buddies to wage war against the evil Sheriff and his horde of blood-sucking minions.

Word is DJ Perry (Dean Teaster’s Ghost Town, An Ordinary Killer) will play the lead in Sherwood Horror. “John Regan has crafted a real page-turner of a script and has the creative vision to make Sherwood Horror a unique and exciting film” said Perry.

Other than DJ Perry, Bill McKinney may also join the Sherwood cast:

“Legendary bad-guy actor Bill McKinney (Deliverance, The Outlaw Josey Wales, First Blood) is in talks to play a small but important role as the modern-day version of Richard the Lionheart in “Sherwood Horror” a contemporary set reimagining of the Robin Hood legend with bite.”

Director John Regan commented, “Everyone agrees that having Bill McKinney aboard will kick the film off right.” Co-Producer/actor Terry Jernigan also commented, “You don’t get any tougher than Bill McKinney.”

In addition, Terry Jernigan has also joined the cast. Jernigan is set to play Nottingham, the head vampire who takes on the role of Sheriff in order to control and manipulate the people of Sherwood while his vampire minions feed on the innocent.

Tim Burton to Make “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” Movie

After all the things we have said about Seth Grahame-Smith’s latest book, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, you wouldn’t think we would have more to add right? Wrong.

The latest bit of Hollywood gossip is that director Tim Burton is set to turn this kickass vampire book into a movie. From Christmas, to chocolate, to Alice and now to our 16th president.

Word is that Burton will produce the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter flick and that Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) has signed on to direct. As for the screenplay, that will be penned by Seth Grahame-Smith, based on his own book, which was released this past week. Grahame-Smith wrote the cult hit Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which is also set for a big screen release with Natalie Portman signed on as the lead.

Ok, so as I mentioned before I loved Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter BUT I am not digging the idea of a movie. Like most people I don’t want to see a book I love twisted and distorted by a lame-ass movie. My main problem is that this book is so full of details and information that there is no way to jam all of it into a single movie.

Now if the rumor is true and the author himself is actually writing the screenplay for the flick, then maybe, just maybe, this whole movie will be able to keep true to the novel. After all, Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire was a very complicated tale, but thanks to the fact that she wrote the screenplay to the movie it was just as extraordinary as her original book. So we have hope in that.

I do like that it’s Timur Bekmambetov directing the film and not Tim Burton. Don’t get me wrong, Burton makes beautiful films, but his style doesn’t really mesh well with Abraham Lincoln. Bekmambetov on the other hand could totally pull it off without making it ridiculously over the top.

Overall I am a bit iffy on the plan for a movie, but if done well then it could be pretty rad. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Vampire Hunter D Returning in Live-Action Form

The big news in the anime world is that Hideyuki Kikuchi’s ‘Vampire Hunter D’ may be hitting the silver screen soon. Woo! According to a report in the horror magazine Rue Morgue, Kikuchi is working on a live action ‘Vampire Hunter D’ film in addition to a new anime feature.

The story also says that Hideyuki Kikuchi and a producer from the ‘Biohazard’ (aka ‘Resident Evil‘) video game series will be working with one another on the live-action film.

Originally published in 1983 as series of novels by Kikuchi and illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, ‘Vampire Hunter D’ focuses on lone warrior named “D” in a post-apocalyptic world that combines elements of pulp genres: western, science fiction, horror, high fantasy, folklore and occult science. The planet is overrun by vampires and other supernatural beings, as well as mutants, technological creations and so on. As a dhampir (half-vampire/half-human), D is one of the best vampire hunters out there.

‘Vampire Hunter D’ is probably best known in the U.S. for the popular anime adaptation which was released in 1985. Another animated film — ‘Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust’ — came out in 2000. Additionally, the very long-running novel series has also been adapted into several manga volumes.

And with so many volumes in the series you may want to catch up and pick up the Reader’s Guide once it’s released.

Higanjima

Vampire movies aren’t just popular in North America, they are huge all over the world (vampires are taking over the world! Bwhahaha!). We’ve got the incredibly noted Swedish ‘Let The Right One In’ and the beloved Korean ‘Thirst’ and now we have the new Japanese vampire flick ‘Higanjima.’

Written by Tetsuya Ôishi and directed by Tae-Kyun Kim, the movie is about the spine-chilling and creepy island of Higanjima, a place where no one has ever come back from alive. Probably because the island just so happens to be inhabited by menacing vampires. But when teenage Akira hears that his missing brother have been seen on the island, he and his friends go there to investigate.

This flick has already been released in Japan and Korea but will be shown at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. SXSW is a set of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that happens ever year – this year it is running March 12-21.

And if you’re a Twilight-lovin Kristen Stewart fan then you’ll be happy to know that not only will the vampire film ‘Higanjima’ be shown at the festival but so will Kristen’s new movie ‘Runaways.’ Unfortunately ‘Runaways’ has absolutely nothing to do with vampires, it’s actually about rock star Joan Jett (played by Stewart) and her rise to fame. But hey, New Moon’s evil Volturi, Dakota Fanning is also in the movie, so you have two Twilight stars together in one film.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead

Turns out that Indican Films has picked up the distribution rights to the popular indie film Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead. This hilarious flick will now be shown in select theaters on April 16, 2010. Woo!

The movie is about Julian Marsh who is a broke and jobless ladies man who gets lucky and lands a job directing an unusual adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. After casting his best friend and his ex-girlfriend in the show, Julian finds himself in the middle of a two thousand year old conspiracy that explains the connection between Shakespeare, the Holy Grail and some super sexy vampires. He comes to find out that the play was actually written by a master vampire named Theo Horace and now it’s up to Julian to recover the Grail in order to reverse the vampire’s curse.

You had to see this coming right? It was only a mater of time before someone mixed Shakespeare and vampires. Just look at how popular all the Quirk Books are. But after reading the reviews and seeing the trailer I already love this movie. It has a great cast, an amazing soundtrack, unique story and it looks beautiful. They’ve won me over.

Q: Where did the idea come from to make a Hamlet vampire movie?

A: Actually Hamlet is very compatible with vampire mythology. Howard Bloom writes about it a little bit. His age is inconsistent throughout the play, and vampires, they’re gonna lie about their age. And there’s a scene where Hamlet says “now I could drink hot blood.” I’m not saying that Shakespeare was writing Hamlet as a vampire, but I’m also not ruling that out as a possibility. In college I studied a lot of that stuff – conspiracy theory, the Holy Grail. There were originally two versions of Hamlet: something called the Ur-Hamlet, which was another version –there’s a mystery around that text already, so I thought it would be fun to explore. Obviously there’s a limit to the amount of that you can do in a romantic comedy.

Ethan Hawke and Weirdly Sexual Vampires

In a recent interview, Ethan Hawke, the star of the latest hit vampire movie, Daybreakers, gave us a bit of insight on how he feels about vampires.

“I know why I like vampires, it’s the same reason 11-year-olds like vampires. I remember I spent the night over at a friend’s house when I was about 11-years-old and Nosferatu came on, with Isabelle Adjani. She was so beautiful,” he said.

“Other vampire movies have captured that completely too, like Twilight and Interview With The Vampire tried to. It’s this sensuality… something weirdly sexual about vampires,” he added.

And not only did he land his beloved vampire role in Daybreakers, but he also got to wear some kickass fangs – on and off of set.

“The worst thing was that I loved my fangs. Because they were fitted on to my teeth, and they were really cool to put them on for parties,” said Hawke. Haha, awesome. A sexy man that loves vampires and has fangs, mmm, sounds perfect.

Daybreakers, which hit theaters January 8, 2010, follows Ethan Hawke’s character Edward Dalton. The year is 2019 and a horrible plague has transformed almost every single human into vampires. Since almost every human is a vamp they are running dangerously low on their supply of blood. The big bad vampires plot their survival, while a researcher works with a secret group of vampires in attempt to save humankind.

So far the flick has received excellent reviews. Yea yea, it has also been bashed and hated by a few reviewers, but for the most part people are saying that it’s an intelligent and highly entertaining film. Even VampChix enjoyed it.

“I’d rate it just above middle. If you think too hard, you might start questioning our own society and its dog-eat-dog mentality (which the film showcases nicely at the end), but I never want to think too much watching a horror flick.”

Sounds good to me.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days

30 Days of Night is a horror movie that came out back in 2007, it is based on the comic book series of the same name. This flick brought back the traditional bloodthirsty and violent vampires to the big screen – no pretty sparkly vamps here. Now, as great as that all is, you’re probably wondering why am I talking about a movie that came out a few years ago. Well horror fans, the sequel to this film is on the way – 30 Days of Night: Dark Days.

The first 30 Days of Night is about a small Alaskan town that falls into darkness for a month each year when the sun sets. When the last rays of light fade the town is attacked by a cruel and ferocious group of vampires with nothing on their minds but blood and chaos. The film follows a small gang of locals as they attempt to survive the month.

The sequel, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, comes back to the town one year later. The film follows the grieving Stella, who has spent the past few months traveling the world, trying to convince others that vampires exist. Of course, no one believes her and she is just about to give up when she meets three people that give her a chance to exact revenge upon Lilith, the vampire queen responsible for the attack on her town. With nothing to live for anymore, Stella joins the three on their mission and winds up in Los Angeles where she attempts to put an end to the evil vampires.

In an interview with Shock Till You Drop, producer J.R. Young filled fans in on what was happening with the sequel.

“I think the second film definitely stays within the world of the first film and it stays true to the second graphic novel in the series for those fans out there. The story is within that world but there are differences and a lot of that is due to the graphic novel. The first film is very much a survival film and this next one is all about revenge. There’s an action component. The last one is a western, this one is more of a war movie. It’s taking the battle to the vampires.”

Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date yet for this upcoming film.

BloodRayne 3: Warhammer

Mmm just look at that picture of the gorgeous Natassia Malthe. Unfortunately you won’t be seeing more of her for she hasn’t come back to play Rayne in the upcoming flick BloodRayne 3: War hammer. Nope, it’s Kirstanna Loken who is coming back to play Rayne (she was the one that played Rayne the first time around). BUT! There are a lot of rumors flying so there may be a chance that we’ll get Natassia instead. Fingers crossed!

BloodRayne 3: War hammer will be the third and final part of the Dr. Uwe Boll vampire trilogy based on the kickass bestselling BloodRayne video games. Now, most fans of the video game can’t stand the movies and I’m one of them, but I’m hoping this third movie will make up for the utter disappointment the first two caused.

According to reports it looks like this time around they are sticking closer to the game’s storyline. Yup, after a craptastic trip through medieval times and then an odd outing spent battling vampire cowboys in the West, Rayne is finally going to where she is needed – World War II in Nazi filled Europe!

Here is where she’ll be giving hell to the evil Nazis lead by the famous Dr. Mengele. The wicked doctor has come up with a plan to give his beloved Führer immortality by turning him into a dhampir through the injection of some Rayne’s blood.

Shooting for BloodRayne 3 will start in Croatia on February 15th, 2010 and if all goes according to plan, the film will be out on DVD later this year.

BloodRayne is definitely up there in my top ten favorite video games and like I said, I’m not a fan of the movies so far. Uwe Boll, one of the world’s most hated directors, has given us nothing but trash. But hell, I’ve been surprised before so maybe he’ll come through this time around.

The Best Known Dracula Movies

Bram Stoker’s influential novel, Dracula, has inspired a ton of movies… seriously, there are SO many Dracula movies. I mean, if you type “Dracula” into the IMDB search bar you get well over a hundred results. While I’m sure there are a bunch of real gems in those results, I’m going to stick with a couple of the most popular and beloved of all Dracula flicks.

Nosferatu (1922)

This was the first big interpretations of the famous novel. Since the writer and director didn’t have the rights to use Stoker’s actual characters they switched it around a bit, turning Count Dracula into Count Orlok.

Lead Actor: Bela Lugosi

It was this movie we have to thank for the modern day vampire stereotype. This is where we got coffins, bats, satin capes, slicked back hair and all of that. Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of Dracula has lasted decades and is still going strong.

According to Christopher Lee, “Hammer’s Dracula, the first Dracula film to incorporate fangs, blood, and red eyes, brings the best Dracula to the screen.” This movie was huge and still is – so much so that most people still recognize screenshots taken from the film.

This film also features a face we all know well, that of Langella’s Dracula. This Dracula flick doesn’t really follow Bram Stoker’s novel well at all but it’s still an interesting interpretation, one that has many fans.

This Dracula film is probably the most popular of them all. Staring not only Gary Oldman, but Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. This was a big budget flick that gained a very large fan base and three Oscars.
