The first trailer for the upcoming Underworld: Awakening has been released at long last! A follow-up to 2006′s Underworld: Evolution, the fourth film in the franchise will follow Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she escapes imprisonment. After being held in a coma-like state for fifteen years, she learns that she has a fourteen-year-old vampire/lycan hybrid daughter named Nissa. Once they are reunited again, the twosome fight to stop BioCom from creating super lycans that will destroy them all. Or so says the old plot synopsis – but the trailer shows us something much different. Check it out:

From the looks of the trailer, the Underworld universe as we know it has ended. The vampires aren't living a life of luxury anymore, but that’s to be expected with humans hunting them down. The more I replay this trailer the more excited I get, at first I was a bit apprehensive about the whole humans vs. vampires/lycans plot, but it totally has the potential to be badass, it's Underworld after all. The trailer does have me wondering if maybe they dropped Nissa. The folks behind the film have been super hush hush on what’s to come, there isn’t even any word on whether or not an actress for Nissa was ever cast. So, did they bail on the hybrid baby idea to go with the human war instead? Hmm. This trailer definitely leaves you with a lot of questions. Unfortunately, Kate Beckinsale didn’t even clear anything up when chatting about the film at Comic-con.

“In the very beginning of the story, [Selene is] involved in no way at all ‘cause she’s been in a coma. She’s basically exactly who she is when she wakes up, it’s just that the world that she’s waking up into is completely and utterly different. Really, the first part of the movie is catching up, as she is, with everything that’s changed around her. The underworld is no longer really “under,” but it’s boring to call a movie World. So, it’s really a question of her waking up and going, “Where the hell am I, and what’s happening?,” and trying to figure that out, and who various significant people are. There are so many things that I’m not allowed to say. I feel very hand-strung,” said Kate.

So it’s still one big mystery. But at least we have an awesome trailer now. Let us know in a comment below what you think of the upcoming flick which hits theaters January 20, 2012.
