‘The Mortal Instruments’ Books Coming to Theaters!

The Mortal Instruments, a hugely popular series written by Cassandra Clare, is coming to the big screen! Screen Gems has bought the rights to City of Bones, the first book in the series, and plans to make the entire series into a film franchise. Hurray!

While I have seen these books displayed at every bookstore I go to, I have yet to read them (tsk tsk) so I had no idea that there were vampires in them until someone pointed it out to me. I’m not sure how big of a role the vampires play in the books, but either way I’m happy that another film with vampires is on the way!

The upcoming film, which is simply titled “The Mortal Instruments,” is currently set to hit theaters in 2012, yeah, it’s a bit of a wait. But while the film is only in pre-production they already have the two big cast members lined up – Clary and Jace – the book’s biggest characters. Set to play Clary Fray is Lily Collins, who was in the recent vampire flick Priest, as well as The Blind Side and the upcoming film Abduction (which stars Taylor Lautner). The man set to play Jace Wayland is Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Caius in the Twilight movies and is also in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The first film follows the City of Bones.

“When her mom is attacked and taken from their home in New York City by some creature, a seemingly ordinary teenage girl, Clary Fray, finds out truths about her past and bloodline on her quest to get her back, that changes her entire life.”

What do you guys think? Have you read the books, if so, do vampires play a big role in the series or not? And of course, what do you think about the cast choices so far?
