The Silver Kiss

On my most recent trip to the book store I saw that the older but well-known teenage vampire novel, The Silver Kiss, was back on the display shelves with a brand new cover. Not only that, but it appears a lot of old vampire books are getting reprinted and shipped to bookstores. Hurray for this vampire craze! Anyway, I thought that I’d shine some light on The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause (best known for her werewolf novel Blood and Chocolate).
The Silver Kiss is about a 16-year-old girl named Zoe and the pain she suffers due to her mother dying of cancer. Her father, deeply grieving himself, pushes Zoe away in attempt to save her from the heartache of it all, but this instead results in even more pain for poor Zoe. Everyone is afraid to speak to Zoe about what she is going through, and so she is stuck suffering all alone in her grief, anger and fear. But then one day she meets the strange but alluring Simon, who can not only see what she is going through, but also understands it. Eventually Zoe learns that Simon is a vampire, kept alive by his desire for revenge. Simon and Zoe are drawn to one another and through their personal sufferings grow closer throughout the book.
The Silver Kiss is a book I read ages and ages ago and what I remember the most from it was that it was a bit different than most other vampire books. The author uses vampires as a symbol and representation of the themes used in her book. While most books are simply an entertaining story and nothing more, this story has a deep and saddening message about grief and dealing with the loss of loved ones. To be 100% honest this book was incredibly depressing to me, but I know of others that found it to be very touching and even other people that felt that this novel helped them through their own hard times and their own pain.
So if you are looking for a sweet, feel good book I’m afraid this isn’t it. Not to say that this is a bad book by any means but it could very well bring you to tears. If you have lost a loved one, or are experiencing deep emotional pain this could very well be a book you can relate to and love.
