The Softer Side of Damon – Love it or Hate it?

Damon-Salvatore-

All sorts of dramatic changes have been going down on The Vampire Diaries, including a very different Damon, who has gone from ruthless badass to puppy-dog eyed sweetie. In an interview, Lauren Cohan, who played the ill-fated Rose, chatted about Damon’s deep and dreary transformation this season and the romance they shared that helped bring along the change.

"I thought it was interesting that they did that," she said. "I think that maybe Damon's not really supposed to be in an engaged relationship, yet Rose kind of woke something in him."

She added, "I don't think it was love, but a new side of humanity, and that paves the way for a new kind of storyline for him, which is exciting. I really loved that scene at the end of [my final episode] where Damon stops on the highway and has this complete mental breakdown."

Cohan may have loved all the changes and the big ol’ crazy breakdown, but what about you guys? Do you like the new sensitive Damon or do you prefer the colder brutal Damon?

Personally, I like both. Without any character growth at all Damon would have gotten real old real fast, there’s only so much merciless murder a viewer can take before they grow bored with a show. So, I feel the change was necessary. However, the uber sensitive, weak and whiny Damon gets on my nerves at times. While I love that he is more caring and that he’s taking a good hard look into himself, I hate how pitiful he has become. That whole bubble bath scene (while sexy) was annoying; hearing him blather on about being a better man was a little tiring. He loves Elena, we get it. What I want is a mix, a mix of tough Damon and sweet Damon. Is that too much to ask?

The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
