They aren’t immortal and they don’t drink blood, but one thing they do have in common with real vampires is intolerance for the sun; specifically, sunlight can kill them. Sure, that whole thing about vampires crumbling into dust wasn’t originally a part of he folklore; it originated largely by the silent classic NOSFERATU, providing a handy and poetic means of disposing of the titular creature. Vampires of folklore would sometimes appear during the daylight hours, and anyone who has read Bram Stoker’s legendary novel DRACULA knows that the Count could walk around in the daytime with no ill effects.
The same can’t be said for people who suffer from XERODERMA PIGMENTOSUM. (Or for Graf Orlock, for that matter.) This rare condition condemns them to a lifetime of staying indoors. Luckily for some kids suffering from the disease, though, there is a summer camp that caters to their special needs. The awesomely titled “Camp Sundown” allows kids with X. P. (I’m just gonna abbreviate it, for simplicity’s sake) to enjoy all the activities that “normal” kids get to do at summer camp—they just do them all at night. I’m glad I don’t have X. P., but camping at camp Sundown sounds kinda fun, don’t you think?
I once saw a made for TV movie “Children of The Dark” (US_) about kids with XP many years ago.Pretty intriguing if not sad!
