Thirst

Thirst is a Korean horror/drama vampire movie written and directed by Park Chan-wook. The film was shown at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival where it received the Jury Prize. Thirst explores the good and the bad in humanity in a dark, somewhat disturbing, semi creepy kind of way. The film’s tone is twisted, gritty and humorous all at once.

Thirst is about a priest named Sang Hyun who wants nothing more than to help humanity, which is why he offers himself up for a medical experiment in attempt to cure the deadly EV Virus. The experiment does cure him of the virus but at a cost, for he is turned into a vampire and to keep the virus from returning he must feed on blood. With the vampirsm comes new powers including super strength and being impervious to harm but also many new desires. The film covers all of the seven deadly sins in Sang Hyun’s personal journey. The story goes on to show the struggles Sang Hyun faces with keeping his faith and controlling his lust. He is tested to the max when a friend’s wife comes to him to escape the life she has always known. Sang Hyun becomes overwhelmed with intense desires of the flesh and blood. While very, very different Thirst has been compared to Interview With A Vampire when it comes to the good vampire versus the bad vampire and the quest for personal redemption.

Thirst has gotten mixed reviews from multiple critics. Some thinking the piece is a brilliant portrayal of the dark and twisted side of ourselves. While others feel that the film was simply best at defying convention and that the writer and director didn’t put enough depth into the story. Although, good reviews and bad all critics seem to agree that the film is worth watching either way.
