A Bloodthirsty Spiderman, Dracula and More in Blade Issue #1

I’m on yet another comic book kick and my most recent and most favorite of reads is Issue #1 of the 2006 Blade series. In this issue we have the ass-kicking half-vampire Blade, we have Dracula and, yes, even a vampiric Spiderman – and that’s all within the first few pages! Oh Marvel, how I love thee.

And before you go “WTF? Spiderman isn’t a vampire!” I assure you, in the Marvel universe Spiderman was in fact a vampire for a period of time.

About the series:

“Join Howard Chaykin (AVENGERS, American Flagg) and Marc Guggenheim (WOLVERINE, CSI: Miami) for a new series starring the popular character who’s launched three movies and a TV series. Featuring Spider-Man, Dracula, Dr. Doom, Wolverine…and Santa Claus!? Plus: a look into Blade’s mysterious past!”

Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Howard Chaykin

Here’s my break down of Issue #1:

Art: 4 out of 5
The inside art wasn’t anything too spectacular, it was well done, but it was a style seen in like 90% of comics nowadays. It wasn’t really noteworthy. The covers though, the covers were great. So yeah, I liked the cover of Issue #1, but the inside art didn’t have me staring in awe.

Story: 4 out of 5
Totally loved the part with Spiderman, but that was just the opening, not the main story. This issue just gave the reader a look at what’s to come. What was shown so far looks pretty rad, but I wanted just a little bit more. The flashbacks of Blade’s childhood were interesting and they tied in well with the present-day events. It’ll be interesting where the story goes.

Overall I enjoyed this comic and will read more… especially if it has Wolverine in it! I’d suggest checking it out.

If you don’t like reading issue by issue, you can buy the entire series in two volumes. Volume 1, Blade: Undead Again, contains issues 1-6 and Volume 2, Sins of the Father, contains issues 7-12.
