A Faithful Dracula?
I know you, my fellow vampire marks and Dracula disciples, are just as excited as I am now that Blumhouse is going to be producing a new Dracula movie as part of its revitalized Dark Universe of films. Ever since the undertaking was announced, though, we’ve been wondering exactly what form this new cinematic Dracula would take. The last big screen attempt at it, DRACULA UNTOLD, sought to give us Dracula as a superhero. It might have worked if the studio hadn’t hired a team of drunken hedge pruners to edit the movie and cut out fully half of what needed to be in there. Karyn Kusama, who will be directing the forthcoming film, promises us that her movie will be “a fairly faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel” that will address “something that gets overlooked in adaptations of Dracula in the past…the idea of multiple voices…the book is filled with different points of view, and the one point of view we don’t get access to, and most adaptations give access to, is Dracula himself. So I would just say, in some respect, this is going to be an adaptation called Dracula, but it’s perhaps not the same kind of romantic hero that we’ve seen in past interpretations of Dracula.” Hey, you had us at “Dracula,” Karyn.
Once we’ve determined what kind of Dracula we’re going to get, we can move on to the next pressing question: Who’s going to portray him? One actor who wants the role? Sebastian Stan, aka Bucky, the Winter Soldier. To that I say, hell yeah! He’d be fantastic in the role. Fittingly enough, Stan is from Romania. And he’s worked with Karyn Kusama before. That’s another couple of reasons why he’d be perfect.
