A new SALEM’S LOT?

Hollywood is nothing if not derivative. The exact opposite of originality. If something makes money, every studio in existence is going to jump on that bandwagon. There will even be studios that don’t exist yet come into being to jump on the bandwagon! For a perfect example, look no further than the superhero craze. The AVENGERS movies make money, right, so it only follows that ANY comic book movie is going to make money. That’s how we end up with movies based on comic books that even comic book fans have never heard of, and the studio execs wonder why those films end up bombing? Genius at work, I’m tellin’ ya.

IT has become the most successful Horror movie ever made, in terms of box office draw. The writing is on the wall, then: there will be more big budget movies based on Stephen King books. King himself has suggested that new versions of THE STAND and SALEM’S LOT might be in the works. Longtime readers know all about my history with SALEM’S LOT. Does the idea of a new iteration, then, thrill me, or do I wish they’d just leave well enough alone? I’m all for it, provided it can be done right. Make it good–no, make it GREAT–or don’t make it at all. That’s what I say.
