A Trailer for SLENDER MAN

Last week I reported on the way in which Sony is seemingly trying to keep its own movie from making money, moving it from its original release date to August 10th, when it must compete for theater-goers’ dollars with THE MEG. I’m still scratching my head over that one. We shouldn’t be surprised by the boneheaded-ness of Hollywood types, but here it seems the studio is deliberately working against its own best interests. Do they simply not like money anymore?

I hope SLENDER MAN manages to be successful regardless of Sony. It isn’t a big budget production, so it wouldn’t have to rake in AVENGERS-levels of dough to turn a profit. The trailer, now that we’ve finally got one, looks good. The film could end up being so much generica, but I remain optimistic. It would be a shame for them to kill the franchise—and it will certainly be a franchise, unless it is a total bomb—before it even gets off the ground.

Whatever happened with those theaters that were threatening to refuse to show the movie? Is all that bad press the reason Sony has been so clumsy in its handling of the film? I find that hard to believe. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, remember.
