Alice Steals The Show
Who all watched JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR on Easter night? A lotta people did, to judge by the Nielsens, and them Nielsens don’t lie. Despite being a Theatre geek, I’d never seen the show. I didn’t even know any of the songs, except for the main theme, and that only because professional wrestler “Superstar” Billy Graham used it as his entrance music back in the day. Had Alice Cooper not been cast in the program as King Herod, I honestly can’t say I would have tuned in. I’m not a big Musical fan. I’m glad I did, though. The program was incredibly well staged, and the performances were all topnotch. But I have to say, the best performance, to me, was Cooper’s. Am I saying that just because I’m a fan? Am I just biased? I AM biased, but I also think my appraisal is correct. The guy playing Judas, Brandon Victor Dixon, was fantastic, as were Ben Daniels, the guy playing Pilate, and Norm Lewis, who portrayed Caiaphas. Erik Gronwall kicked ass as Simon Zealotes. Sara Bareilles did a good job as Mary Magdalene, and John Legend was fine in the tile role, considering that he isn’t an actor. But it was Alice who really stood out.
Cooper only wore a hint of his trademark stage makeup, and a glitzy, almost carnival-barker-esque suit. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t come out in black leather, spikes, and full makeup, but he was still awesome. If you missed JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, check out a replay when you get the chance. It’s smooth, slick, stylish spectacle, with a message as controversial and powerful as it was when the show debuted in the early 70s. Or when the actual Jesus Christ, superstar preached it a couple’a millennia ago.
