All Hallow’s Read is Back!

Last year horror author Neil Gaiman created All Hallow’s Read, a day where you give a loved one a horror book in celebration of Halloween. When I wrote about All Hallow’s Read last year it was still a new idea, just something he happened to mention on his Twitter one day, but since then this fantastic day has gathered quite a following and now it even has its own website.

Being the Halloween-loving bibliophile that I am All Hollow’s Read makes me all kinds of happy so of course I have to give this very special tradition some love here on Vampires.com.

Here’s more info on All Hallow’s Read from the official website:

So what is All Hallow’s Read?
All Hallow’s Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book.

Is this instead of Trick or Treat? Because I don’t want to get egged, and the kids around here are mean.
Not at all. Trick or Treat is Trick or Treat. This is All Hallow’s Read, a great excuse to give someone a book.

You can give out scary books or comics to trick or treaters on Hallowe’en if you want to, obviously. (We recommend looking the child in the eye and saying, “Take it. Read it. Trust me… around here… a book can be… safer than candy.” Then chuckling to yourself, as if remembering something unfortunate that happened to some of the local children only last year.)

Haha! Oh how I love this event! In honor of All Hallow’s Read, here are just a few spooky vampire book recommendations for all ages. There are many eerie vampire books out there, these are just a start. Please feel free to leave a recommendation in a comment below. The more the better!

Children:

Scream Street: Fang of the Vampire (Book #1) by Tommy Donbavand
When Luke Watson turns into a werewolf for the third time, the Government Housing of Unusual Lifeforms (G.H.O.U.L.) moves his family to Scream Street — a frightful community of vampires, zombies, witches, and sundry undead.

A Vampire Is Coming to Dinner!: 10 Rules to Follow by Pamela Jane and Pedro Rodriguez
Read along as the narrator of this story comes up with some very practical rules for dealing with a vampire. But rules are meant to be broken, aren’t they? From feeding the vampire garlic to filling the house with mirrors, the narrator is doing just that!

Young Adults:

Teeth edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling
An anthology containing 19 vampire stories by some fantastic horror authors (including Neil Gaiman).

Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan
One of the few young adult vampire series with a touch of horror in it. Action packed and full of terrifying vampires this is a great horror series.

Adult:

30 Days of Night by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith
Yes, this is a comic, but a damned scary one, which is perfect for All Hallow’s Read. In a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, the sun sets and doesn’t rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil will come that will bring the residents of Barrow to their knees.

The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan
Now one of the scariest vampire books out there, The Strain tells the chilling apocalyptic tale of vampires vs. humans.

Those are just a couple of recommendations, there are thousands of vampire books out there, so explore and give the gift of vampiric horror!

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
