Anne Rice Announces ‘Interview with the Vampire’ Graphic Novel!

As many of her fans know, Anne Rice is very active online, particularly on Facebook – she posts articles, discusses world issues, chats with fans and more. On her Facebook page she teased that a big announcement was coming, and at long last the secret was revealed! Her most famous novel, Interview with the Vampire, is being adapted into a graphic novel. But that’s not all! This upcoming adaptation has a bit of a twist, while it will have the same plot, it will be told in an entirely new point of view! Check out the details and a preview below!

According to Anne and her interview with Publishers Weekly, the graphic novel will adapt Rice’s Interview with the Vampire with the story being told by the child vampire Claudia instead of Louis, who was the narrator of the original novel. Newcomer Ashley Marie Witter will illustrate the story, which will be published as a single volume in fall 2012.

“I remember reading Jane Eyre in the Classics comics and how much I loved the details and seeing the madwoman in the attic in those little panels and seeing the whole novel play out,” Anne said when asked about comics and the new project. “What always drew me were very detailed, representational drawings, rather than something abstract. I wanted to see a lot of richness and a lot of depth.” Graphic novels, she said, “have a freedom that is all their own to create an entire universe in detail fairly inexpensively, compared to a film.”

“I am looking at the drawings, they have such wonderful detail in the costumes, and in my work costumes are almost like a character,” said Rice. “They are part of the work, and they got that. What I look for in a movie or a book like this is the essence—baroque detail, sensuality, luxurious hair, faces that are intriguing and deep—and they got it here.”

Yen Press senior editor JuYoun Lee added, “On Interview with the Vampire there were lots and lots of brainstorming and conversations at the beginning because we wanted to make sure we were understanding Claudia as much as possible. For the artist, especially if they are new, the core has to be that they understand the characters.”

Anne also noted that she has no issues with the adaptation. “For me the Vampire Chronicles are completely over. I’m writing something new right now so I’m comfortable with other people’s adaptations.”

As a HUGE fan of Anne and the Vampire Chronicles I am beyond excited about this graphic novel! From what Anne and the creators have said it appears that they are doing everything to stay true to the original, all while working this fantastic twist. I absolutely love that it will be told from Claudia’s point of view, and I’m relieved to hear they put a lot of work into capturing her thoughts just right. I also love the artwork, it’s gorgeous and MUCH better than the art in the little know Vampire Lestat graphic novel.

What do you think of the upcoming graphic novel?

This is the third comic book / graphic novel adaptation of Interview after the Japanese manga and Innovation’s 12 issue series (never collected into a single volume as far as I know). From the preview the art in Yen Press’ looks better than either of its predecessors.

Sounds – and looks – gorgeous! How about similar adaptation of Master of Rampling Gate, Anne?
