This past week brought news that a new remake of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is in the works. Instant eye-roll. Yawn. File that one under “why would they even bother?”. The movie has been remade, what, twenty times now? I exaggerate, yes, but it has been reheated four times already. (Only one of those, the one from Tom Savini, is any good.) There’s beating a dead horse, and then there’s flaying the skin right off the carcass. Give it a rest, already! This one will star Vivica A. Fox of KILL BILL fame taking over the lead role, a black woman instead of a black man. That’s the only thing that will be remotely original about it.
Check out the official spin: “Amidst a worldwide event where the dead awake and roam the earth as zombies, a small group of human survivors struggle to stay alive and fight off the wandering zombies who are intent on eating them and turning them into the Walking Dead.”
Note the last two words in the pitch, and that those words are capitalized. Not only are the producers of this flick stealing from Romero, they’re trying to cash-in on the success of THE WALKING DEAD! Shameless cash-grab, without a shred of innovation or independent creativity. Laziness and greed. Hard pass on this one.
