Are ‘Twilight’ Tattoos Taking it Too Far?

We’ve got quite a few Twilight fans on the site, but do any of you love it enough to actually get a Twilight tattoo inked to your skin for all eternity? Cathy Ward of Berkshire, England does.

The 49-year-old Twi-hard has so far endured 22 hours of sitting and dished out £2,200 (around $3500) for her eternal tribute to the series of films and books by Stephenie Meyer. That’s right, thousands of dollars on Twilight tattoos.

And she isn’t done yet. In addition to the giant tat on her back, she wants more Twilight tattoos to adorn her stomach and arms. Ward is saving up for her 50th birthday and is planning to undergo another 12 hours under the needle for about £1,500 to £2,000 worth of additional Twilight tattoos.

Cathy says she believes the money spent has been worth every penny for the effect it has had on her life.

“I got hooked on Twilight at Christmas last year and since then I have gone from size 24 to 10. I have never been more positive, more outgoing, fit and never had so much fun in my life,” said Ward.

While at home she heads for the cross-trainer in her Twilight-themed spare room where she works out to DVDs and soundtracks of the movies. She is currently working on toning her stomach so that she can get a tattoo of Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen in the films) placed there.

In an interview, Ward said “Most people think I’m absolutely nuts and keep saying to me, ‘What next?’ she added, “It’s just part of me now. I tend to show if off as much as I can and most of the people who know me do ask to see it. If people don’t like it that’s fine, it always encourages conversation and is a good ice-breaker.”

Personally I think it’s taking obsession to a whole new ridiculous level. There’s nothing wrong with being a fan of something, or getting a fan tattoo, but this seems a bit much to me. Don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no issues with tattoos, I currently have four myself, and I love them. As long as someone puts some serious thought into their ink, and doesn’t do it simply to get attention, then hey, to each their own. This Cathy Ward is an adult, she’s happy and if she wants to spend a small fortune on Twilight tattoos, then she has every right to. But Twilight? Really Cathy? Ah well, like I said, to each their own.

Would any of you get a Twilight tattoo? Or a tattoo for another book you love?

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

  1. I don’t think there is anything wrong with it to be honest. I’ve got a twilight inspired tatt myself and would get more.
It’s an amazing achievement to have lost as much weight as Cathy has and if the tattoos are the way she rewards herself and they make her happy, then good for her!
You mentioned that you think that serious thought needs to be put into tattoos and I agree. But then go on to question why Cathy would cover herself in Twilight. I cannot say for definite that her thinking would be the same as mine but when I get a tattoo it often stands for a lot more than just the picture or words inked into my skin. I think that when Cathy looks at those tattoos she’ll see a lot more than Bella, Edward and Jacob. She’ll see all the hard work she put into losing weight, the inspiration the films and books provided, and even feel the determination and pride she felt from achieving these things. The tatts are beautiful and she should be very proud to show them off :)

  2. People get tattoos of cartoon/anime characters and such, so really it doesn’t surprise me. I think it’s actually a tiny bit better than getting a tattoo if your current significant other’s name, since relationships don’t always last and it can cause bad feelings in future relationships.

…Though I’m curious what Twilight has to do with her losing dress sizes and such.

  5. I’m a great believer in individuality. The relative acceptance of that, plus hot running water and anesthesia, are to me what is best about living in this era. Good on her! Literally…

  6. Thanks for the comments- have just started on 1st sleeve which is a continuation of the back tattoo, still having so much fun and the weight is staying off- -watch this space.!

  7. Just love these comments- most of my upper left arm is done- am hopefully getting more done next week. Tattoos are a very personal statement and not for the faint hearted. My very understanding husband is just happy that i am happy and loves showing off his (now) very sexy wife to people- he even takes some of pics to work. Will be at Reading Tattoo Fest in June -showing off all tattoos along with loads of others.Should be fun!
