Attack of the Kiwi Vampires!

As of late in New Zealand, the picturesque home of Hercules, Xena, Middle Earth, and more movies than you can shake a stick at, there has been a rash of vampire attacks. No, really. As if one needed another reason to want to visit there. Yep, they’ve got vampires. The New York Post said so.

Alright, so they’re not really vampires, not supernatural creatures, revenants returned from the grave to seek sustenance from the living. No turning into bats or avoiding sunlight, no wandering around in billowy bloodstained nightgowns, as we so often see in the movies. They’re just women who bit people. The only thing that makes this anything worth mentioning, and different from what you see every night in every major city in the world (usually with copious amounts of alcohol constituting a major factor), is the unlikelihood of so many such attacks taking place in such a limited geographic area in such a narrow stretch of time. Over the course of two days there were three such attacks. An ear was almost bitten off and one woman bit into a guy’s neck so hard that the victim had to be rushed to the emergency room for blood loss. Though this linked article does not explicitly say so, the fact that two of the three incidents took place in a pub is suggestive that, as is typical, alcohol may have been involved.
