Bio Briefs: True Blood’s Sookie Stackhouse, Eric Northman and Sam Merlotte

True Blood Biography Briefs featuring Sookie Stackhouse, Eric Northman and Sam Merlotte. Some of my personal favorite characters in the Southern Vampire Mystery series by Charlaine Harris and now one of the most successful HBO sagas from the creative mind of Alan Ball. Beware, here be spoilers!

Sookie Stackhouse is a barmaid from Bon Temps who is telepathic, meaning she can read people’s minds. Her powers manifested as a child and her parents considered her mentally ill. Sookie is closest to her grandmother whom she lives with. Her grandmother is eventually murdered by a serial killer. Sookie and her brother Jason are now the only ones alive in their family. Other than being a telepath, Sookie can also communicate with other telepaths and can use her powers to perplex other people. Most men seem to desire Sookie, but she falls in love with a vampire named Bill Compton. One of the main reasons she finds Bill attractive is because she cannot read his mind considering he is a vampire. Sookie endures much hardship as Bill’s girlfriend.  She is dragged into the dangers of the vampire world and many vampires find her attractive because of her strange gifts. It is later that people find out she is a fairy. Sookie ends up falling in love with Eric and they begin a relationship even though Sookie worries about the future of them being together.

Eric Northman is one of the most powerful vampires in Area Five. He serves as a sheriff and owns a bar called “Fangtasia.” He comes off arrogant and is always making jokes about everything. Eric finds Sookie fascinating and saves her life many times. They share many intimate moments and even have a brief romance after a spell is cast upon him making him unable to remember anything or even who he is. Sookie becomes attracted to the new, sweet Eric but then draws herself back when the spell is broken and he becomes himself again. It seems as though he likes Bill Compton but feels competition with him for Sookie’s attention. Eric finally gets Sookie, when he has to marry her due to vampire laws. After the marriage, they begin a relationship together which she is skeptical about but he feels as if it will be promising.

Sam Merlotte is the owner of the bar Merlotte’s in Bon Temps. He is a close friend of Sookie and her boss. Sam was initially very interested in Sookie and has even kissed her, however they never date but they’re very close. Sam is a shape-shifter and can change into anything he sees but he chooses to mainly choose the form of a Collie. Sam was adopted by the Merlotte family but then abandoned at fifteen when they saw him change into a dog. Sam is very protective over Sookie and gets jealous when she starts dating Bill Compton. He makes it known to her that he doesn’t trust her vampire boyfriend. Sam begins a sexual relationship with a maenad named Callisto who attacks Sookie but she shortly leaves the town afterwards.
