Say what, now? According to the linked article, “Ali [Mahershala, that is] has already voiced the character of Blade for a scene at the end of Marvel’s ‘Eternals,’ but is now itching to fully embody the character.” Um, I saw ETERNALS. Really good flick. I didn’t see Blade in it. I didn’t hear Blade, either—or so I thought. After reading that passage, I dig the requisite googling. It turns out that Mahershala Ali *did* provide some voice acting for that post-credits scene for ETERNALS! When Dane Whitman, portrayed by Kit Harington and soon to become the Black Knight, starts to reach for the Ebony Blade (that’s the creepy sword he unwraps) and that voice off-camera asks him “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”, that voice belongs to none other than Blade! Yes, I stayed for that scene and yes, I heard the voice, but I would’ve sworn it was Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury!
Now I’m excited in a whole new way. Ae they going to connect the Ebony Blade to the character Blade in the MCU? It would make sense, as the sword has something of a vampiric nature. In the comics, the Ebony Blade was forged by Merlin from a meteorite and in exchange for its magical properties, the ability to cut through anything and to grant its wielder supernatural healing if not immortality, it has a corrupting effect.
Blade and the Ebony Blade. Story potential seems endless.
