His company makes some great movies, but I’m starting to suspect Jason Blum himself is a dumbass.
First there was that thing where, when all the early buzz regarding HALLOWEEN KILLS was sterling, with even mighty John Carpenter pronouncing the film grand and everyone else who’d seen it raving about it, Blum stated that it was “pretty good”. That was a strike against him in my book. Now it has come out that it was his decision and his alone to release HALLOWEEN KILLS to livestreaming on the same day it opens in theaters, guaranteeing that the movie will make far less money than it would have if it had opened exclusively to theaters.
“It was my idea to do it,” he admits. “I didn’t want to have a movie that I’m really proud of that I think is great and have there be an excuse why people didn’t see it…I felt like I did that with FREAKY, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. So I don’t want to repeat that experience…it was my idea [to release HALLOWEEN KILLS to livestreaming]. I stand behind it. I’m glad that we’re doing it…”
Okay, doofus, there’s a big difference between when FREAKY opened in theaters last year and right now. Big difference. If you’d have just waited a few days before making your decision, you’d have seen SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS and VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE each rake in the dough at the box office, something HALLOWEEN KILLS would have done, too, if you’d given it the chance. You shouldn’t feel “glad” that you made that decision. You should feel like a dumbass. How bad a taste is it going to leave in your mouth, contemplating all the money you *won’t* be making now?
