Bogus Vampire Hunter Kits – Caveat emptor!

Kudos to Anthony “Edward” Hogg (private joke, peeps) of VAMPED for getting a mention in this article from the venerable ATLAS OBSCURA, one of my personal favorite websites. Way to go, Eddie!

Anyway, there are these vampire hunter kits. They’re in museums. They turn up not infrequently on eBay. And most of them are complete fakes. That is to say, they are “fake” when they are passed off as being centuries old, dating to the Victorian era or even prior, when people really believed in vampires. More than likely, such kits were creations of modern origin, fashioned to cash in on the contemporary fascination with the Undead. Is this a bad thing? Only if you get hoodwinked into paying bookoodles of cash for a “genuine” antique. As a Carnie at heart, an avid admirer of P.T. Barnum, I love a good gaffe. I don’t care if they’re fakes, as long as they’re GOOD fakes, which most of these are.

If you’re thinking of purchasing one for yourself, however, might I suggest that you consider making your own? A few trips to a few antique stores combined with a little ingenuity and artistic flair could result in a kit every bit as spiffy, and every bit as genuine, as many of those seen in museums and private collections.
