Way back in 2008 Double Helix Games teased all of us vampire-lovin’ gamers with “Harker,” a game featuring a badass vampire hunter loosely based on Jonathan Harker from Bram Stoker’s legendary novel “Dracula.” The developers waved a badass little promo in front of our bloodthirsty eyes and then they just took it all away!
According to IGN, “In the game, players take on the role of Jonathan Harker, who is on a personal mission to destroy all vampires after his beloved Mina falls prey to Dracula. Gameplay involves a combination of hunting these ferocious killers through tracking and exploration.”
As you can see by this short trailer, the game was going to be a gore-filled masterpiece with vampires and blood aplenty. If the fighting style shown in the short promo looks familiar to you it’s because the studio behind “Harker” are the same folks that brought us the much loved “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” game for the original Xbox. That Buffy love mixed in with the fang-filled promo generated a lot of hype for “Harker,” which was slated to come out on the 360, PS3 and the Wii. So what happened? Why did the info coming in on “Harker” suddenly stop out of the blue?
Because Double Helix decided that they would much rather do “Silent Hill: Homecoming” instead. So they put “Harker” on indefinite hold, without letting anyone in the media know just how far along the game really was in development. Rawr!
After doing a bit of digging I discovered that Double Helix had put the rights for “Harker” up for sale. Which means that they have absolutely no intention of going back to the game and finishing it. This seriously sucks, and not in the good way.
Hopefully someone picks up the rights and completes “Harker” because I want it!
What about you guys? If “Harker” was completed and released do you think you’d check it out?
