Britain Wants More Vamps!

Bram Stoker’s set his masterpiece, Dracula in London but people in Britain think that since then, America has really taken over the world of vampires. And Britain wants it back! Britain is fighting back against what they call the “Americanization” of vampires and so, they’ve set up a conference for Brits to come and enjoy all things vampire-related.

The conference, which is called “Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture,” will take place at the University of Hertfordshire and it will be running next week on April 16 and April 17. At the event, attendees can expect to listen to guest speakers, writers, and experts on our fanged friends, all while they’re being served food that comes in coffins! Meanwhile, they’ll discuss the portrayal of modern vampires, the history of vampires, and vampires in pop culture today. Dr. Sam George is one of the professors that is behind the event and she is one of the many Brits that thinks that America has taken over the world of vampires.

Well, it can’t be denied that the United States is a world leader when it comes to many things. So why would the world of vampires be any different? And with our favorite vampire movies and TV shows  like Twilight, which takes place in Washington; Vampire Diaries, which takes place in Virginia; and True Blood, which takes place in Louisiana, it’s not hard to see why one would think that vampires are becoming too “Americanized” as Dr. George put it herself.

But Dr. Sam George is definitely on the right track. She wants to show the United Kingdom that vampires are not monsters. They are sexy, glamorous, and let’s face it, something that we all admire and appreciate. I think conferences such as this one at the University of Hertfordshire is a great thing. Why shouldn’t people from all over the world showcase their love of the vamp and try to get even more people on the vampire bandwagon. If only I lived in the UK….I for sure want to attend the conference and nibble on some goodies that have come straight out of a coffin!
