Last week I reported on the plans to reboot BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. I pronounced that the whole one-hoss-shay was subject to tankage sooner rather than later. I was not, it turns out, the only one to feel this way. It seems everybody and his cousin Jerry feels that way. The backlash from the fanboy community was especially quick and acerbic.
The showrunner of the new series, or as I like to think of her, the new madam tryin’ to pimp Buffy, Monica Owusu-Breen, wasted no time in getting on Twitter and trying for damage control. Here are her comments, sans editing by yours truly: “For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay…There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel…They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to…But here we are, 20 years later…the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer.”
Could be. But why, then, remake BUFFY instead of continuing the storyline from the original series with a new, different lead slayer?
