Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Drusilla

Drusilla, my favorite Buffy character of all! She was insane, psychic, and a vampire – perfect! She was so wonderfully twisted and dark, yet still playful and childlike.

In 1860 Angelus had became obsessed with the human Drusilla, a lovely young Catholic woman who lived with her parents and two sisters in London, England. Drusilla had psychic abilities, and was capable of occasionally foretelling the future, especially tragic events. However, she believed this to be an evil curse and wished to enter a nunnery to cleanse herself. Angelus sensed her innocence and became obsessed with destroying her, as Drusilla had the potential for sainthood. So, Angelus tortured and killed Drusilla’s entire family, causing her to run away to a convent in Prague. On the day she was to take her holy vows, Angelus made her watch as he brutally killed every person in the convent. The trauma of Angelus’s slaughter drove Drusilla insane. Instead of letting her die, Angelus then chose to turn her into a vampire, as he considered her a masterpiece, a testament to his skill.

After being sired, Drusilla, now an evil predator but still insane and childlike, joined Angelus and Darla on their deadly travels. In 1880, Drusilla sired the young poet William the Bloody, who then joined the group. She and William (later known as Spike) shared a close and intimate relationship, though Angelus continued to sleep with Dru.

Shortly after Angelus is cursed with a soul, Spike and Drusilla (unaware that Angelus is now Angel) leave Darla and Angel. Before their arrival in Sunnydale in late 1997, Drusilla is attacked and severely injured by a mob in Prague, leaving her in a weakened and frail condition. Spike cares for his vampire love, and the couple decide to travel to the Hellmouth in hopes that its energy will help to restore Drusilla.

They arrive in Sunnydale and Spike discovers that Drusilla can be cured by the blood of her sire, so Spike captures Angel and allows Drusilla to torture him until it is time to perform the ritual. Even though Buffy and the Scoobies save Angel, the ritual is successful. Drusilla, fully restored, now takes care of Spike, who had been temporarily paralyzed by Buffy’s attack. Later, Drusilla kills Kendra, another Slayer, by hypnotizing her and cutting her throat with a fingernail (which makes Spike very proud).

Angel then looses his soul and joins Dru and Spike again. Drusilla is thrilled by Angelus’s plan to destroy the world and encourages his flirting; both of which strongly disturbs Spike, who wants Drusilla for himself and does not really want the world to end. Spike decides to help Buffy save the world in exchange for his and Drusilla’s escape from Sunnydale. Drusilla opposes Spike’s betrayal of Angelus, and he attacks her, ultimately carrying her unconscious body from the chaos. Drusilla and Spike flee to South America, where Drusilla feels that Spike is no longer “demon enough” for her. So she breaks up with him.

Drusilla reappears on Angel, the spin-off show, when Wolfram & Hart bring her to Los Angeles to re-sire Darla, who had been resurrected as a mortal human. Drusilla turns her and the two wreak havoc in the city until Angel sets them on fire. Dru and Darla go underground to heal, but Drusilla leaves Darla, who is then protected by Lindsey McDonald.

Drusilla then returns to Sunnydale to persuade Spike to join Darla and herself in reforming their “family,” but instead, Spike seizes the opportunity to try to prove his love for Buffy by offering to stake Drusilla. Heartbroken, Drusilla escapes Sunnydale.

Favorite Drusilla Quotes!

Drusilla: “I’m naming all the stars.”
Spike: “You can’t see the stars, love. That’s the ceiling. Also it’s day.”
Drusilla: “I can see them. But I’ve named them all the same name, and there’s terrible confusion.”

[about her favorite doll Miss Edith] “Miss Edith speaks out of turn. She’s a bad example and will have no cakes today.”

“But it’s so funny. I knew before you did. I knew you loved the Slayer. The pixies in my head whispered it to me.”

Darla: “Come on, Dru. Let’s have a bath so the boys can weep in private.”
Drusilla: “Will you hold me under the water?”
Darla: “If you wish.”

“I met an old man.  Didn’t like him.  He got stuck in my teeth.  But then the Moon started whispering to me… All sorts of dreadful things.”

“Shh. Rrruff. Bad dog”

“We’re going to destroy the world. Want to come?”

  5. I've always wondered, given Drusilla's history, if perhaps she was a slayer that hadn't yet been called. For that matter, why were there no slayers-turned-vamps? That could've been cool. (I loved the feral slayer on Angel.)
