Surging cases of infection from the Deltarona have in recent weeks left their mark on the box office. No movie since BLACK WIDOW has performed as well as studios had expected, not even THE SUICIDE SQUAD. Then along came FREE GUY and proved that people will go to the movies regardless of the Deltarona; they’re just gonna be more selective about which movies they show up for. THE SUICIDE SQUAD was available via livestreaming, too, you must remember. (Granted, so was BLACK WIDOW, but BLACK WIDOW hit theaters before the Deltarona got as bad as it is.) FREE GUY was not. That was a major factor, I think, in how well it did at the box office. CANDYMAN wasn’t available for livestreaming, either.
People who claim to know about such things estimated CANDYMAN would bring in some $15 million. It almost doubled that, providing the biggest opening ever for a movie directed by a black woman. It wasn’t just that the movie appealed to black audiences, though. All shades of folks came out to see the CANDYMAN, and by and large they really liked it. (Also, FREE GUY saw only a slight dropoff in its ticket sales for its second weekend, which is also great news for the theaters.) Movie theater owners should be happy, as should movie fans; as should black folks, who are finally seeing movies by black creators and featuring largely black casts score touchdowns; as should ladies, who saw a woman director break a new record. Most of all, though, I think fans of quality Horror movies should be happy. I know I am.
