The official title of the film is PENINSULA, but it seems that those in charge of the film’s American release are savvy enough to want to avoid what happened with DOCTOR SLEEP. The later film didn’t do that well in theaters, and I am convinced that it would have done much better, made more money, had they titled it THE SHINING 2. The average moviegoer is, we must sadly concede, pretty stupid. I don’t think the average moviegoer even knew that DOCTOR SLEEP was a sequel to THE SHINING.
Anyway, it would seem that the title of the film when it is released in the United States—to theaters, no less!—will be TRAIN TO BUSAN 2: PENINSULA. It isn’t truly a sequel, according to director Yeon Sang-ho. The synopsis for the new film, which is “set four years after the events of the first movie” and “centers on a former soldier who has managed to escape the devastated Korean peninsula [but] is given a mission to go back [where he] surprisingly meets up with survivors”, doesn’t mention a train at all. But it’s still smarter to tack on the TRAIN TO BUSAN title, to make sure the audience, including the more clueless members, finds the film when it is released. No official date has been confirmed at this time.
Sadly, I bet the release will be limited. I’d love to get the chance to see it on the big screen.
