Charlaine Harris Ending the Sookie Stackhouse Series

Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse books, which are the inspiration behind True Blood, will soon be coming to an end. The Southern Vampire Mysteries started in 2001 with the first book Dead Until Dark and is now up to eleven books. That’s a long run for a series, and according to Harris, it’s not going to go much longer since she plans to end the series after book 13. Sad, but all series must end eventually.

In an interview with NBC New York’s PopCornBiz, Harris revealed that she intends to end the series to move on to something new in two years.

“On the page, I have two more books,” she says. “I’m writing Book 12 and then there will be Book 13. And then I’ll think of something else new and wonderful to do.”

And don’t worry, there won’t be any loose strings left after she’s done, Harris cleared that up, “I think it’ll be total closure. . . I don’t go back to things once I’ve finished them. That’s kind of what I do. I don’t want to write Sookie after I get stale.”

She then moved on to say that yes, she will be sad to say goodbye to her characters, but that it’s time for something new.

“I’ll miss them,” she admits. “But I think writers like to do different things. At least this writer does.”

“I’m going to be working on a graphic novel next,” she revealed. “I’m very excited about that. It’s called Cemetery Girl with Christopher Golden, and it’s a very exciting opportunity.”

So all of you Sookie fans have two more books to look forward to, then it’s done. But you still have True Blood to look forward to. Speaking of True Blood, Harris may not be the only one saying goodbye to Sookie and the gang – Alan Ball, the man behind True Blood, may also be leaving. According to Hollywood Reporter, the executive producer is in talks with HBO to return to the show for a fifth season, though he’s recently indicated that he might not want to come back after next year saying, “I don’t know if I have any left in me after that. We’ll see.”

Hmmm… that’s two big losses in the world of Sookie Stackhouse. What do you guys think about both the end of the series and Alan Ball possibly leaving?

  5. I’ve been a huge fan of the series most of the time. I will miss Sookie Stackhouse’s adventures. Still, it’ll be nice to put the series to rest and give it some closure.

  6. I’m a huge fan of the Sookie Stackhouse series, and I wholeheartedly agree it’s time to say good-bye to the series. I struggled through the last book, Dead Reckoning, as nothing significant happened, and the overall plot of the novel happened in the last thirty pages. As far as Alan Ball goes, I’d hate to see him leave, but as long as the TV show is still going, I’ll be satisfied.

  8. I don’t want to the see show end. Alan Ball can be as creative as he and the writers wish to be. After all, the books haven’t been followed to any real degree from what I hear.

  9. All things must come to an end, as sad as that may be. But at least I’ll have 13 books to re-read at my leisure.

As far as Alan Ball is concerned, wish he’d never got his hands on True Blood.

  10. Please don’t let this series end. I am SO badly addicted to it. I have almost every single book now. I really hate to see such an AWESOME series end. I look forward to each book and each HBO series. Bill, Sookie, Jason, Eric, Terra, Lafayette, Sam, and all the others are awesome. It’s going to be so sad to see this great thing come to an end. :( Thank you so much for sharing this most awesome experience with all of us fans, Charlaine. I’m very positive I speak for all of us Sookie Stackhouse fans when I do say thank you. :) I hope you come out with more books like the Sookie Stackhouse Series. :) <3
