Collinwood From Above

I don’t know who took this photograph or I would credit him/her. Whoever did it has my thanks and appreciation. The photo shows Collinwood, the grand house from DARK SHADOWS, from above, probably taken from a helicopter. The Collinwood from the original series, that is, not the 90s remake series. And not the Collinwood from the movies HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS and NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS; Lyndhurst Estate in New York served in that role for those films. The Collinwood from the original DARK SHADOWS, which will for me and many DARK SHADOWS fans will always be the only *real* Collinwood, was Seaview Terrace (aka the Carey Mansion) in Newport, Rhode Island.

Seaview Terrace was constructed, or construction was completed on it, in 1925. It is actually a pastiche of two different mansions, and has served as a private residence, military barracks during World War 2, a private school, a college (parts of it, anyway), and is today a private residence again. While I would dearly love to see the outside and the grounds, I don’t really have any desire to see the inside. (Which is for the best as the current owner does not allow tours.) It wouldn’t look like Collinwood, not on the inside. The interior of Collinwood only ever existed in our mundane world on a soundstage in New York City.
