Compare and Contrast: GREMLINS and THE LOST BOYS

It would probably never have occurred to me to compare these two films if a certain person I know hadn’t been a complete and total blithering idiot. That may sound unkind, I know, but you tell me, what kind of person would go into a place of employment WHILE RUNNING A FEVER to ask the boss if it was okay to take a sick day, instead of just calling in? A complete and total blithering idiot, that’s who! And because this person displayed such abject stupidity, stupidity bordering on criminal negligence, everyone who came into contact with her now has to behave as though they have the ‘Rona until her test results come back. As a result, all my plans for the weekend, in place for weeks now, had to be cancelled. Instead, I spent the weekend in my car, avoiding all contact with people.

The only positive to the whole thing is that I got to watch THE LOST BOYS at the drive-in again, paired with GREMLINS. This led me to the realization that the two movies are in fact really similar.

Both are genre-defining classic Horror-Comedies from the 80s. Both involve monsters that cannot go out in the sunlight. Both feature scenes in which one of those monsters melts onscreen—one of the vampires after falling into the bathtub full of holy water, and one of the Gremlins upon being exposed to the sun at the end of the movie. Oh, and both feature Corey Feldman.
