Concerning Dracula’s Bloodline

Every so often I come across mention of someone claiming descent from the historical Dracula, Vlad III of Wallachia, the “Impaler.” Please note that this article is not an attempt to call anyone a liar. I merely have some questions. While there certainly are people alive today who are related to Dracula—supposedly Prince Charles is one of them—I am speaking of *direct* descendants only. Professors Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally stated that Dracula’s line died out in the 1600s.

I feel confident in saying that there are more people alive today who claim to be direct descendants of the historical Dracula than actually *are* direct descendants. I question whether there are *any* direct descendants alive today. I don’t think it is something that could ever be proven or disproven. If anyone has any evidence I’d sure like to see it.

I think it’s also safe to say that there were, or at least might have been, children born to Dracula or to his descendants whose births were never officially recorded, due to illegitimacy or for whatever reason. Thus it is entirely possible that there could be living descendants of Vlad Dracula out there today who have no idea that they are his descendants.
