Last week I wrote about board games, in particular the Barnabas Collins DARK SHADOWS board game. It struck the right nostalgic note with some of our readers, so I thought I’d share with you this week some thoughts on my favorite board game from when I was a kid. It was called CREATURE CASTLE. What I didn’t know at the time I was playing it was that it was kind of a rip-off of the DARK SHADOWS game, in the way that DARK SHADOWS ripped-off Poe, Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, and WUTHRING HEIGHTSâwhich is to say, ripping-off in a most wonderful way. Both the DARK SHADOWS game and CREATURE CASTLE were produced by Whitman, the same company that produced Gold Key comics.
CREATURE CASTLE was your standard board game, where youâre racing against other players to see who can be first to escape from a creepy haunted castle. Naturally I never really wanted to escape at all. I remember the gorgeous artwork of the board and the player cards, and the adorable little plastic game pieces. I loved it madly. Unfortunately I no longer have that game, and buying one online will cost you a literal arm and leg. However, you can enjoy the artwork in digitized form right here!
