Depraved, or Undead? Jack the Ripper as a Potential Vampire

Of the millions of conspiracy probabilities floating around throughout history, combined with unsolved crimes and suspicious happenings, none could be more fascinating than that of Jack the Ripper.

Considering every myth has its genesis in an attempt by grasping intellects to explain the unexplainable, is it any wonder that some have theorized that history’s most infamous serial killer was a vampire? Jack the Ripper’s crimes defy easy explanation, and his primary motivation—a savage, insensate bloodlust—is totally in keeping with the predations of the undead. Jack struck always at night, seemingly appearing and disappearing out of the London fog.

The number of women murdered is debatable. The consensus is that there were five victims; there may well have been others. The degree of mutilations committed upon the bodies varied, from a simple(!) throat slashing to a complete vivisection-ing of the corpse, reducing it to a state no longer resembling in any aesthetic respect a human being. The most tantalizing element of the murder spree is that Jack was never caught, despite the unprecedented police scrutiny. The title of my column here comes from one of Jack’s taunting letters. “I saved some of the proper red stuff” to write with, he states. But the blood thickened “like glue,” and he had to use red ink. Over a century later, the Ripper’s bloody handwriting is indelibly scrawled across the parchment of history.
