Do I Believe In Vampires?

Something I get asked on a regular basis, whether it’s in an interview or by a reader, is if I believe that vampires exist. After all I do love vampires and write about them everyday, so you would think the obvious answer is that yes, I do. But truth be told, it’s not that simple for me.

As some of you may have noticed, I am a huge vampire folklore/history junkie, I love that nearly every country has their own, totally unique vampire myths and legends. Overall there are hundreds of myths and dozens, upon dozens of different species of vampires. Every country and every author has their own idea of what a vampire is.

For example, in the Philippines they have a vampire known as the aswang that appears as a normal human during the day, but at night takes on the appearance of a giant bird and drinks people’s blood with its long straw-like tongue. And in Germany they have the alp, a vampire that attacks people’s dreams and then feeds on women’s blood by biting their nipples. In the Caribbean you have the soucouyant, a vamp that can turn into a fireball… and you get the point. There are loads of different species of vampires.

So, who is to say what is right and what is wrong? Which one of those myths am I supposed to believe in? In my head there are dozens of kinds of vampires, not just one, so I don’t know which to believe in.

Most people have this singular idea of what a vampire is, that traditional vampire. Whether they got the idea from Anne Rice or from Twilight, they have that image and that’s what they believe in. But I have too many kinds of vampires spinning in my mind and therefore it’s illogical to believe in one over the other.

So do I believe in that one definite traditional vampire? No, because there are too many vampires and too many legends and I have no way of knowing what it real and what isn’t. Maybe they all are?

And for the record, I am speaking of the traditional and mythical vampire, not psychic vampires or sanguinities. That’s an entirely different topic.

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

    1. What’s really “kool” is how you left a bunch of comments under different names thinking you could fool us. Hahaha :)

      1. U SOUND FREAKING RETARDED U FREAK…. U DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE HECK UR TALKING ABOUT AND IF I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY IL SAY IT UNDER MY NAME CAUSE I WANT ALL YOU TO NO HOW MUCH I THINK UR FREAKS FOR BELIEVING IN VAMPIRES

    2. Keylea, vampire folklore is not something Moonlight “made up”, it is, you know, folklore. And I do not believe in vampires either, but about being “kool”… well, I´m not “kool”, it is for sleaze who bully fat nerds. I am passionate, not “cool.”

    1. i’ve always wanted to meet one yet i have not. in my mind they are just stories til i actually see one for myself is when ill believe they are real.

  3. I do not believe in Vampires, I love reading the stories. I would need some kind of proof to even think about believing in Vampires.

  4. Hey Moonlight,

I found this site of urs while I was browsing about these dark, mystical, enigmatic creatures. I am really happy to find someone really find them amusing. I cant say I bilv if vampire exists but I want them to be there some where. There should be a hope. I might sound crazy but I think I am just passionate about them.

    Thanks Moonlight

  5. Hey no offense guys but I do believe they are out there! They just need an invite! I’m inviting any that would rescue me!

  6. i would say they could exist someplace, after all if they didnt exsist how could people come up with the stories and legends? so i think they could exist. the one thing i really like about vampires is reading about the history and folklore too, im more a history junkie but vampire folklore is so interesting too.

  7. It is true that Vampires are folklore. But you cannot shun others people’s beliefs. Keylea stop being so egotistical… I don’t think anyone on this page likes it. I believe in myths… They ARE myths- but there is still hope that they are true. I do believe that there is or will be some sort of vampiric outbreak or disease that will consume the world like the plague did to Europe. The world is just evolving that much. But that’s irrelavant. There is a possibility that any of the mythical creatures could exist.
Keylea, people like you shouldn’t be allowed on the internet. It’s people like you who have no life and cyber-bully others who have faith. Us, who are intrigued by the ones of the night (i.e- vampires), at least have beliefs and we do have lives. We just spend ours doing something we find productive. Something we enjoy.
Don’t bother us with your unintelligent nonsense. We simply don’t care. Don’t comment if you have nothing nice to say.

  8. I believe in vampires. I believe they are good and bad. I am the biggest “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fan and I believe that some r good (for example, Angelous) I know vampires are real no matter what people say but I’ve practiced fighting and skills and I’m ready for them.

  9. I know you commented a year ago but I just want to make clear a few things;
all the legends about vampires started centuries ago with a strange (but real) disease which prevented people to go out until the sunset, they had a very bright complexion, and doctors used to think that they needed blood to heal , so they gave them blood and obviously it didn’t work. People were a bit stupid, they were scared of those patients so they kicked them out and they started to tell legends about it.
That’s all I know but at least it’s true. Of course that would awesome to be one, to be stronger than everyone and to feed on people but living forever? NO way !!

  10. No one knows what is the truth. There are lots of secrets hidden in the mighty world and i think vampires exist because if stuffs like astral projection, spirits and all exist why can’t vampires exist. Maybe vampires are living with us but we just fail to understand it!
