DRACUL, a Pre-Review
I received my reviewer’s copy of DRACUL, the new novel by Dacre Stoker (great-grandnephew of Bram) and JD Barker, and while I’m reading as fast as I can, my body unfortunately must surrender to sleep at some point. I won’t issue an official review and recommendation until I finish the book, as I have in the past enjoyed a good story wherein the author failed to stick the landing and as a result the entire work slipped in my estimation. I don’t expect that to be the case this time, though, as thus far DRACUL has been crazy good. Dacre also co-wrote the “official” sequel to DRACULA a few years back, and while I enjoyed that effort, too, I find that I’m enjoying DRACUL more.
I have no complaints, but if one were to break out a microscope to look for one, it might find a mitochondria-sized gripe about the title of the book. When I first heard about it, and that it would be titled DRACUL and would constitute a prequel to Bram Stoker’s DRACULA, my mind made some connections and assumed that this new novel would feature the exploits of Dracula’s FATHER. Vlad II was given the title “Dracul” when he was inducted into the Order of the Dragon. His son was called “Dracula” with the A tacked on at the end, which means “son of.” DRACUL the novel, however, has nothing to do with Vlad II. It provides an alternate origin of sorts for Bram’s fictional Count Dracula and explores the “true” story that led to the writing of DRACULA. I suppose Dacre and Barker used the name “Dracul” to delineate their character and their book from Bram’s. Understandable, but a tad confusing at times. Good book, though.
